Montoya jury selection begins; connected to Kayleah Wilson case‎

The sexual assault trial for Robert Montoya of Greeley began Monday in Weld District Court with jury selection. Montoya is accused of the sexual assault of Kayleah Wilson, the 12-year-old Greeley girl who disappeared a year ago and whose body was later found in an irrigation ditch.

Witnesses in Montoya sex assault trial struggle with timelines‎

Witnesses involved in the sexual assault trial of a Greeley man accused of having sex with a 12-year-old girl spent Wednesday struggling to remember events and the time frames in which they occurred during the last few months of her life.

In a case where timing is everything — especially when it comes to determining whether Robert Montoya, now 19, had sex with 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson before or after his 18th birthday in January 2010 — jurors may have a difficult time.

Church mentor says he urged youth not to date younger girl‎

A church mentor to a Greeley man who is accused of having sex last year with a 12-year-old girl who was later found murdered said he tried to talk him out of dating her, the Greeley Tribune reports.

Ryan Haines, who considered himself like an older brother to Robert Montoya, testified Thursday that he thought Kayleah Wilson was 14, but he still disapproved of the relationship.

Montoya is charged with two counts of sexual assault, one involving a pattern of abuse.

Jury Finds Dead Girl's Boyfriend Guilty‎

A jury in Weld County has found the former boyfriend of Kayleah Wilson guilty of sexual assault on a child.

But the larger question of who killed the 12-year-old girl remains unanswered.

.... Montoya will be sentenced at 11 a.m. June 3.

Prosecutors said he could face anywhere from eight years to life.

A year after Kayleah Wilson disappeared, police haven't given up on finding her killer

It was a year ago today, about 3:30 in the afternoon, when the 12-year-old left her home in south Greeley, on the way to meet a friend for a birthday party.

Later, the Greeley police and the FBI would find a surveillance video that showed what may have been Kayleah Wilson walking in the Greeley Mall parking lot. If it was her, she would never be seen alive again.

Kayleah was the object of one of the biggest investigations in Greeley history, with the entire detective division of the police department working her case, along with dozens of FBI agents from Denver, searching for traces.

Her body would be found two months after she disappeared, washed up in an irrigation ditch less than a half-mile from her home. Kayleah was killed. There has been no arrest.

Her one-time boyfriend, Robert Montoya, 19, was convicted by a Weld County jury Friday for sexual assault on a child because of his sexual contact with the 12-year-old. Police have said they still consider Montoya a “person of interest” in the case.

“It’s an ongoing, active case,” Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said. “We still have detectives assigned to her case, and we’re still getting tips to follow.”

Kayleah’s mother, April Wilson, said shortly after the Montoya verdict that she can’t talk about her daughter’s case because it’s still under investigation. She said she doesn’t want to say anything now that would jeopardize the case.

The two-month search for the girl — whose body was found May 19 — would include checking more than a thousand homes and contacting registered sex offenders in Greeley and Weld County. There were more than 300 leads in the case, most called in by people who possibly saw someone who looked like Kayleah.

Kayleah Wilson's Boyfriend Sentenced

19-year-old Robert Montoya will be spending 8 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting Kayleah Wilson the months before her disappearance and death.

His sentencing was Friday, June 3rd in Greeley.

Kayleah disappeared on March 28th of last year, and was found almost two month later in an irrigation ditch outside of Greeley, Colorado.

According to the Greeley Tribune, Montoya was convicted in march on two counts of sexual assault, one involving a pattern of abuse.

Following the prison sentence, Montoya will serve a mandatory parole sentence of 20 years to life.

He is still a person of interest in her murder, but the case is still under investigation.
