Goa police name Scarlett murder witness

Police in Goa have named the Briton they believe to be a crucial witness to the rape and murder of a schoolgirl at a beach resort.

Michael Anthony Mannion, known as Masala Mike, is thought to have been drinking with Scarlett Keeling, 15, and her alleged attacker hours before her death.

I am not in the least bit surprised that Masala Mike is not coming forward, I would bet that he wants to but dare not (presuming he was not invoved).

I know this area very well, having spent about a year there in total (on seperate visits). I too was attacked on this beach by 4 men but was lucky enough to escape serious injury - rape I am sure was their intention.

Unless a lot has changed, I can tell you that the police in this area actually pay to be posted there. It is a get rich quick scheme for them. Everything works on bribes (baksheesh). You can be arrested for the slightest thing and pay hundeds or thousands of dollars to be released. Bigger misdemeaners can cost families in the UK their houses. It is seriously corrupt!
The advice to newcomers was always try to pay your fine there and then, not to get as far as the police station and try very hard to not let the police get hold of your passport.
I was once fined for driving through a red light. Fair enough if the lights had been on, but they were not - I paid up and went on my way - I knew the danger of disagreement.

This guy knows if he comes forward he will be in danger of being thrown in a dark hole for a long time.
Scarlet's mother is brave and I wish her luck although I do think she was very foolish to leave her child there. I cannot tell from reports if the people she left them with are Westerners or Goans. Of course there are good and bad folk everywhere and on the whole Goans are good people but the culture is very different and I have always found it difficult to know who to trust when they are not of my language or culture. I find it easier to make a judgement about a British person because the vocabulary, the body language etc. are more familiar if you see what I mean.

It would be no shock to me if the wrong people get convicted. The police will want this rapped up ASAP so that they look efficient. Scarlett's mother is right to try to invove higher authorities - I hope she gets a result.

Goa is a fantastic place but it attracts more than its fair share of undesirables from all over the world.

What a waste of a young girls life.
