Stepmom of missing NC girl deemed flight risk‎

NEWTON, N.C. (AP) — A judge deemed the stepmother of a missing 10-year-old girl a flight risk and raised her bond Wednesday after the woman's grown daughter testfied that she's carrying on an online relationship with an man in England who was sending her thousands of dollars.

While the bond hearing unfolded, dozens of investigators searched a nearby North Carolina landfill for key evidence in the disappearance of Zahra Clare Baker, but police said they don't expect to find the girl's body there.

Catawba County District Judge Robert Mullinax Jr. said there were "disturbing and unsettling allegations" in the case as he increased Elisa Baker's bond from $40,000 to $65,000. Defense attorneys had asked him to lower bond to $10,000, which they said fits legal guidelines for her charge of obstructing justice.

Zahra Baker's stepsister asked a judge Wednesday not to release her mother from jail, saying she feared for her safety and that of her own children.

Amber Fairchild, 25, described her mother, Elisa Baker, as a potentially violent and unstable woman who has severed ties with her N.C. family and begun an online relationship with a man in London.

Fairchild didn't specify why she was afraid, but a Catawba County prosecutor noted that Elisa Baker has had several allegations of communicating threats filed against her this year.

Searchers in Caldwell don't find Zahra on Monday‎

Authorities headed back to Caldwell County Monday in their search for missing 10-year-old Zahra Baker.

Despite a search by several law enforcement agencies and a surprise appearance by Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, at one point, authorities turned up nothing.

The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office FBI, SBI and the Hickory Police Department searched an area of Caldwell County off Dudley Shoals Road near Burns Road from daybreak Monday until about 5:35 p.m. Nearly a dozen cars were at the scene, as well as SBI and FBI lab vans.

Authorities find mattress considered key in search for missing girl‎

Four days after calling off a search for key evidence, investigators have located a mattress that they believe is important to their probe of a North Carolina girl who hasn't been seen for weeks.

The missing mattress, which belonged to 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker, was thrown out by her parents in early October, days before she was reported missing, police say.

While authorities continue to look for Zahra's body, the search for the mattress itself was called off Friday. But on Tuesday, employees at Foothills Environmental Landfill in Lenoir, North Carolina, found the mattress and turned it over to investigators.

The bed contained DNA that will be tested to confirm it is indeed related to the Zahra Baker case, according to a statement from the Hickory, North Carolina, Police Department.

Authorities say the girl's disappearance is being investigated as a homicide.

Police Found Mattress in Landfill Believed to Contain DNA Evidence; Plan Special News Conference on Wednesday

The latest news out of Hickory, North Carolina, is that authorities might be close to breaking the case of missing 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker, who was reported missing by her parents on Oct. 9.
WBTV in Charlotte reported that new evidence and the cooperation of the girl's stepmother, Elisa Baker, has moved the investigation along in the past few days. It is not known as yet if Zahra's remains (police have presumed the child to be dead since the third day of the investigation into her disappearance) have been found, but developments seem to indicate that a major announcement regarding the case is imminent.

A special news conference has been scheduled by authorities for Wednesday afternoon.

The news conference follows the release of information from investigators Tuesday that they had been receiving cooperation from Elisa Baker, Zahra's reticent stepmother, since Sunday. They also acknowledged that they had removed Elisa from her Catawba County jail cell Monday and had taken her to at least two search sites.

Prosthetic leg discovered in search for NC girl‎

Authorities were trying to determine whether a prosthetic leg investigators have found is that of a missing North Carolina girl, police said Wednesday.

Hickory Police Maj. Clyde Deal said searchers found the leg at a home where the stepmother of 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker's once lived. The girl had an artificial leg because she lost hers to bone cancer. Zahra, who also uses hearing aids, was reported missing Oct. 9 and authorities believe she is dead.

Deal said the prosthetic leg was discovered Tuesday afternoon near some brush in Caldwell County.
