HICKORY, NC (WTVD) -- A statewide Amber Alert has been issued for a child missing west of Greensboro.

The Hickory Police Department is searching for 10-year-old Zahra Claire Baker.

She is a white female, approximately 5 feet tall and weighing 55 pounds. She has brown hair, blue eyes, and a left prosthetic leg.

She was last seen wearing a camouflage T-shirt and black knee-length tights at 21 21st Avenue, Hickory, NC.

10-year-old North Carolina girl missing from home‎

An Amber Alert has been issued after a 10-year-old girl was reported missing from her Hickory, North Carolina, home on Saturday.

Zahra Clare Baker was last seen sleeping in her bedroom about 2:30 a.m., according to Clyde Deal, deputy chief of the Hickory Police Department. She was reported missing Saturday afternoon.

"We are conducting interviews now and following up on the leads we have so far," Deal said. "As of right now, we haven't ruled anything out. We're exploring all possibilities."

.... She has a prosthetic device below her left knee and is hearing-impaired.

Stepmother of missing Hickory girl arrested‎

Hickory, N.C. — The stepmother of a missing Hickory girl was arrested Sunday morning on outstanding charges unrelated to the 10-year-old's disappearance.

Police said details that have emerged in the past 12 hours make it seem less likely that a stranger abducted Zahra Clare Baker, who was reported missing a day earlier by her father, Adam, and stepmother, Elisa.

Elisa Baker was arrested on unrelated, outstanding charges around 10:45 a.m., police said. Details of those charges weren't released.

Police said Elisa Baker has not been eliminated as a person of interest in Zahra's disappearance.

They didn't release details of the ongoing investigation, but said it has revealed "inconsistencies." The father and stepmother were interviewed early in the investigation, and police were following up leads to corroborate their statements.

Stepmother named a 'person of interest' and arrested on unrelated charges. Child last seen Saturday.

A 10-year-old Hickory girl with disabilities remained missing Sunday night as investigators shifted their focus from abduction by a stranger to the home where she lived and disappeared from Saturday.

Police began searching for Zahra Clare Baker, 10, on Saturday afternoon, and the FBI, SBI and U.S. Marshals Service joined the case on Sunday.

The girl's stepmother, Elisa Baker, was arrested Sunday on about two dozen outstanding charges not related to the case, but she was named a person of interest because of inconsistencies discovered during the investigation, police said.

Police Question Stepmom Over Missing Girl‎

... The Hickory Police is extremely serious about finding Zahra and they have launched full scale search operation as a mean to the end. Zahra’s stepmom has been questioned about her missing stepdaughter already but this time she has been arrested for a string of charges that are completely unrelated to Zahra’s disappearance. It is not yet clear if Elisa has an attorney but the police spokesperson claimed that there are at least two dozen charges against the woman.

Police: 'Anything's a possibility' in disappearance of 10-year-old‎

Investigators are interviewing former neighbors and former teachers, and seeking surveillance video as they investigate the disappearance of a 10-year-old girl from her Hickory, North Carolina, home, police said Monday.

Zahra Clare Baker was last seen sleeping in her bedroom about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Hickory police. She was reported missing about 2 p.m. Saturday by her father, Adam Baker, and stepmother, Elisa Baker.

"Although nothing is being ruled out at this point, there have been details that have surfaced in the past 12 hours indicating that a stranger abduction is less likely than once anticipated," Hickory police said in a statement Sunday.

Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins told reporters at a briefing Monday it's unlikely Zahra ran away. The girl is hearing-impaired and needs hearing aids she does not have with her, he said, calling that "a pretty good indication."

However, the girl may have the prosthetic leg she uses, Adkins said. It has not been found

An Amber Alert was issued for Zahra on Saturday and will remain in effect until the girl is located, police said.

Chief: Unclear when missing NC girl was last seen‎

Time was running out Monday in the search for a shy but upbeat 10-year-old whose battles with bone cancer left her with a prosthetic leg and hearing aids in both ears, the police chief said. It's unclear when she was last seen alive.

The father and stepmother of 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker told police that they discovered she was missing on Saturday and that one of them had seen her sleeping in her room hours earlier. Yet Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins cast doubt on their accounts during an afternoon news conference.

He said investigators were having trouble finding anyone else who had seen the home-schooled girl alive in the last few weeks.

"We don't know the last time anyone saw her," he said. "We're having a difficult time establishing a true timeline."

Zahra's father, Adam Baker, said during an earlier TV interview that it was possible his wife could be involved in the disappearance, which was reported hours after a fire in the home's backyard. Elisa Baker was arrested Sunday on about a dozen charges unrelated to the girl's disappearance.

Police: Time running out for missing NC girl, NC‎

The police chief in the city of Hickory says time is running out in the search for a 10-year-old girl who's battled bone cancer.

Police Chief Tom Adkins told a news conference Monday afternoon that investigators are having trouble finding anyone who had seen 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker alive in the last few weeks.

Adkins says the father and stepmother of the girl told police that they discovered she was missing on Saturday and that one of them had seen her sleeping in her room hours earlier. But Adkins is casting doubt on those accounts.

Police dogs smell remains at missing girl's house‎

A search warrant says police dogs detected the smell of human remains on two cars at the house where a missing North Carolina girl lives.

The document filed Monday didn't indicate that police found any remains in their search, which was conducted the previous night...

... The warrant says the dogs detected the smell on cars belonging to the father and stepmother of the girl, who suffers from bone cancer and had a prosthetic leg.

Volunteers Amp Up Search For Missing 10-Year-Old Girl‎

A search warrant released Monday reveals more details about the case of a missing 10-year-old girl from Hickory girl.

According to the search warrant, investigators showed up at Zahra Baker's residence responding to a brush fire outside the home on Saturday morning when they found a ransom note inside of a Chevrolet Tahoe that was parked outside.

The note claimed a girl had been kidnapped and demanded $1 million in unmarked bills. The words "no cops" were scribbled nearby.

Hickory police chief Tom Adkins said Chief said "We are questioning the validity of that note. We have no further demands from the note."

The note was addressed to the employer of the girl's father, Mark Coffee, and when his daughter was found safe police left.

Seven hours later, a second call came into police. This time Zahra was reported missing. According to the search warrant her father believes the kidnappers took her.

The search warrant also states that search dogs alerted police on human remains found in the couple's vehicles. Police tell Channel 9 the father, Adam Baker, is cooperating but wouldn't go that far when talking about Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker.
