Police cast doubt on sick girl's disappearance‎

Investigators cast doubt Monday on accounts given by the father and stepmother of a missing 10-year-old whose battles with bone cancer left her with a prosthetic leg and hearing aids in both ears. A search warrant revealed Monday that police dogs had detected the smell of human remains on cars belonging to the couple. Hours earlier, the police chief said investigators were having trouble finding anyone outside the household who had seen Zahra Clare Baker alive in the last few weeks. The warrant filed in a Hickory court didn't indicate that police found any remains in their search Sunday. It said the dogs detected the smell on a sedan and SUV.

Zahra Baker, 10, not seen by outsiders for weeks‎

Police have charged the stepmother of a missing 10-year-old girl with felony obstruction of justice after they say she admitted writing a ransom note, and have cancelled the AMBER Alert for her and said the case is now a homicide investigation.

Zahra Baker was reported missing Saturday. But police say no one outside her immediate family has reported seeing her in weeks, and say they have no idea how long she has really been missing.

The case is now a homicide investigation, Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said. No one has been charged with murder. Adkins said Elisa Baker, 42, admitted writing the ransom note and then requested an attorney.

A relative of a missing 10-year-old North Carolina girl says she had a miserable home life and was locked in her room for most of the day.

Brittany Bentley says Zahra Clare Baker was only allowed out of her room for about five minutes each day to eat. Bentley says the girl's stepmother, Elisa Baker, would get mad and take it out on Zahra, whose bone cancer left her with a prosthetic leg and hearing aids.

Bentley is married to Elisa Baker's nephew and appeared on CBS' "Early Show."

Stepmom Beat, Locked Up Missing Girl, Kin Say‎

Two distant relatives of Zahra Clare Baker asserted on "The Early Show" Tuesday that her stepmother had something to do with the 10-year-old North Carolina girl's disappearance this weekend.

Brittany Bentley, who is married to the nephew of Elisa Baker, Zahra's stepmother, said she believes Elisa played a role in Zahra's disappearance.

"Elisa had something to do with it. I just think this is something for a long time that we knew was going to happen -- everybody that was close to the family."

Bentley said she thinks this could be the case based on the miserable home environment in which Zahra lived.

She said, "She was locked in her room, allowed five minutes to eat, that was it. She was beaten almost every time I was over there for just -- just the smallest things. Lisa would get mad and take it out on Zahra -- things the kid didn't deserve. She just had a horrible home life. One time, I remember she had a black eye and she said it was from the door. But we all knew, suspected it was from Elisa."

"Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez said, "Wow. She was locked in her room all day? She was beaten? Did anyone -- did her father, for example, try to stop this or did anyone report this to authorities?"

Bentley responded, "That's the crazy thing. I never saw Adam spank her, punish her, do anything. But he would sit there and watch Elisa do it to his child. He would just sit there and not say anything. Yes, her daughter actually reported to DSS (North Carolina Division of Social Services), and they came. I don't know how much was done. But yes, it was reported."

Amber Alert canceled as Zahra Clare Baker presumed dead. Officials believe 10 year old Zahra may be killed by family

The search for 10 year old Zahra Clare Baker is yet to find any clue to believe she is dead. Even after their search with dog in a wood trimming area investigators failed to get any evidence of death. Yet, North Carolina authorities believe that the girl may be killed.

On Wednesday seven officers came to Morganton with a police dog to search for Zahra on a wooded lot of a tree services company where her father employs. Officials disclosed that a different dog got a “hit" at the scene a day earlier, but nothing was found then. The search is going on in different places to get any clue about the missing.

Police has already said that they don’t believe the wordings of Zahra’s father and stepmother since the girl was suffering from bone cancer and was reportedly missing over the weekend.
