By Anthony Colarossi,
Casey Anthony and her attorneys will hash out defense budget today
Casey Anthony's attorneys are expected to go to court today and propose a budget for more state funds to defend Central Florida's most high-profile murder suspect.
Some have questioned why Anthony's defense is now publicly financed through the Justice Administrative Commission.
But Jose Baez, her lead defense attorney, maintains his team must provide a comprehensive and competent defense against what he called the "open checkbook" enjoyed by the prosecution in this murder case. Anthony, 24, is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie.

Prosecution will release 1,000 pages of Casey Anthony discovery Tuesday
Prosecutors plan to release roughly 1,000 pages of discovery in the Casey Anthony case on Tuesday.
Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Danielle Tavernier said the documents should be made available electronically by the late-morning on Tuesday, probably around 10 a.m.
She said the discovery records do to not follow a single theme or strand. While some information will be new, some of it has been released already, she said.

More discovery released in Anthony case
The state attorney’s office released more than 900 pages of discovery in the Casey Anthony case Tuesday morning.
Included in the discovery is an e-mail written by Tammi Unser from the Orange County jail to Matt Irwin from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office narrating Casey Anthony’s reaction when she saw breaking news television coverage of the discovery of a child’s body near the Anthony family home on December 11, 2008. Unser writes that Anthony was escorted to the female medical area to watch the TV coverage and when she entered the room and saw the TV and “immediately fell into the chair.”
Unser goes on to say Anthony was breathing rapidly and stated “Oh No” after she heard it was the body of a small child. Unser writes that Anthony was then asked is she wanted to see the doctor and she replied that she wanted to speak to her attorney, Jose Baez, but was told she had to see the doctor first. She was then escorted to the doctor and later Baez arrived and the two met in an interview room which is where Unser says Anthony broke down and started to cry.
The discovery also includes the application for a wire tap of Casey Anthony’s phone as well as phones belonging to her mother and father, George and Cindy Anthony, her brother Lee Anthony, and her ex-boyfriend Anthony Lazzaro. The wire tap application was approved by a judge. A judge also approved tracking devices be placed on the vehicles driven by them.
Also included in the discovery is a letter dated June 8, 2010 written by an inmate in Marquette, Michigan to prosecuting attorney Linda Drane-Burdick as well as an affidavit he produced. In the letter and affidavit, Curtis Jackson tells her that in late 2007 until mid 2008 he was an associate of Casey Anthony and Tony Lazzaro, a former boyfriend of Casey. Jackson says he met Anthony through a pen-pal and the two wrote each other for several months.
Jackson goes on to say that Anthony told him she was too young to have a child and care for one and asked him if he killed anyone and what he would do to get rid of a child. He also says she asked him how to dispose of a body.
There is also a letter written by Cindy Anthony to Cindy dated July 21, 2010. In the letter Cindy tells Casey to “stay focused and strong” and that she sees her “strength and commitment to fight for your freedom.”
Also in the discovery is an e-mail from attorney Christian Lake with the Justice Administrative Commission to prosecuting attorney Linda Drane-Burdick. In the e-mail Lake discusses a phone call a JAC employee received from a person in Minnesota claiming to have knowledge about “Kaylee Anthony’s whereabouts.” (sic) Also included in the e-mail are the hand written notes the employee made while on the phone with the person.
And, remember Amy Huizenga? She the friend who had her checkbook and nearly $500 stolen by Casey Anthony. She filed a police report on October 23, 2008. She told investigators she got a call in the middle of the night. The mysterious person left her a threatening message saying "If she did not get the charges against Casey Anthony dropped the damage would be irreversible." Huizenga told investigators the man said he ha her license plate number, knew the car she drove and her schedule. Investigators traced that phone call down to a pay phone in Manhattan.
The discovery also includes the application for a wire tape of Casey Anthony’s phone as well as phones belonging to her mother and father, George and Cindy Anthony, her brother Lee Anthony, and her ex-boyfriend Anthony Lazzaro. The wire tap application was approved by a judge. A judge also approved tracking devices be placed on the vehicles driven by them.
Anthony has pleaded not guilty on charges that she killed her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee Marie, claiming a babysitter kidnapped her toddler. Caylee was last seen in June of 2008, but she was not reported missing until a month later. Her remains were found in woods near the family's home in December 2008.
Anthony's trial is scheduled to start in May 2011 and they are still on schedule to meet that date.

Jail: Anthony Shaken When Child's Body Found
Casey Anthony Says 'Oh No' When She Sees News Coverage
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Hundreds of pages of documents were released by prosecutors in the case against Casey Anthony on Tuesday.
The documents included a report from an Orange County Corrections officer who was with Anthony when the announcement was made that Caylee Anthony's body had been found.
Lt. Tammi Unser sent an e-mail to investigators on Dec. 11, 2008, after she spoke with a detective about the incident.
Unser said Anthony fell into a chair, doubled over and began breathing rapidly upon seeing the news coverage on television.
"At one point, we thought she was going to hyperventilate," Unser stated in the e-mail.
Anthony asked to have her chains loosened because she said they were too tight, but Unser said the chains were not too tight and were not changed.
As Anthony continued to watch the coverage, Unser said she stated, "Oh no," after hearing the location where the body was found and word that it was a small child's body. She then began pulling at her arms and fidgeting with her hands, the e-mail stated.
It was more than a week later before the body was identified as Caylee Anthony.
When asked if she would like to speak with a doctor in the jail's mental health unit, Anthony told Unser she wanted to call attorney Jose Baez. Unser said she would have to talk to the doctor before calling Baez. Anthony agreed.
Anthony was taken to see the doctor, and Unser said she remained with her during the visit.
"(Anthony) was still breathing rapidly and fidgeting with her hands during her conversation with him," Unser said.
During the conversation with the doctor, Anthony was asked if she would hurt herself, and she reassured both of them that she wouldn't.
"I stressed my concern was her safety, and we needed to make sure she was OK," Unser said. "She again stated hurting herself would not solve anything."
Anthony did ask for a sedative and reiterated her request to speak with Baez. When asked whether she had taken sedatives before, Anthony said the only drugs she had ever taken were muscle relaxants after an injury.
Unser waited with Anthony for Baez to arrive. Unser said about 15 minutes later, Anthony changed the subject to football and began talking about the national championship game.
Anthony was taken to an interview room after Baez arrived. Unser stood outside the interview room during their visit.
"During the first couple of minutes, Casey broke down and started to cry. She held her head in her hands and seemed visibly upset by her body motions," Unser said.
After a conversation with Baez, Anthony received the sedative and was escorted back to her jail cell.
"(Anthony's) personal property was bagged up as she was put on a (psych) watch," Unser said. "She was allowed to keep reading materials and her pictures of Caylee."

Anthony's mother believes daughter is innocent
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's mother wrote in a letter that she has never given up believing that her daughter Casey, who faces a murder charge in the death of her toddler, is innocent.
The letter Cindy Anthony wrote last summer to jailed daughter Casey was among 1,000 pages of documents released Tuesday by the State Attorney's Office. Cindy Anthony says in the letter that after Casey Anthony's trial is over, they will look together for young Caylee Anthony.
The toddler's remains were found in December 2008, months after she disappeared. Despite that, Cindy Anthony has said previously she believes her granddaughter is still alive.
Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge and said a baby sitter kidnapped Caylee. Trial is set to begin in May.

Judge Limits Payments for Casey's Defense
A Florida judge has put the brakes on some expenses submitted by defense attorneys in the capital murder case of Casey Anthony who is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Judge Belvin Perry told defense attorneys that Florida taxpayers will not be writing an open check for Anthony's defense.
Taxpayers have already paid more than $40,000 for expenses for Anthony's defense, according to court records.
Judge Perry warned Anthony's defense team that he would not approve expenses for private investigators to follow hunches in the case.
A Fishing Expedition
"Don't go drilling for oil when there's no sign of oil anywhere," Perry told the attorneys. "Taxpayer funds do not allow you to go off on a fishing expedition."
The taxpayers have also paid an estimated $70,000 for her room and board since she has been incarcerated after she was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Caylee, who disappeared in June of 2008, but was not reported missing until July. Her body was found near the Anthony's home in December 2008.
Anthony has pleaded not guilty and insists that Caylee was kidnapped by a nanny, who has never been found.

Bugs, Smell Of Death Key To Casey Anthony Prosecutors
Forensic Entomologist To Testify At Anthony Murder Trial Next Year
RENSSELAER, Ind. -- On a farm in northern Indiana, Neal Haskell looks inside the mouth of a dead sow for signs of life.
"Here's a blowfly! Right there!" he exclaims upon closer inspection. Maggots let the forensic entomologist know he's looking at the early stages of decomposition.
The creepy, crawly and smelly nature of his work might make some people gag, but not Haskell. He's been studying bugs for more than 50 years and has testified in more than 100 trials.
Haskell insists that while his work may look like something out of a science fiction movie or TV drama, there's no junk science in what he does and it's no newcomer to crime solving.
"The first use of forensic entomology was 1265 in China," says Haskell.
The Connection To Casey
Next year, he'll take the stand for the prosecution in Casey Anthony's murder trial.
In a 30-page report that's key to the state's claims, he noted that microscopic scuttle flies, or "coffin flies" as he refers to them, were feeding on decompositional fluids in the trunk of Anthony's car as well as paper towels that may have been used to clean the vehicle.
"They're not there accidentally," Haskell said during a recent visit from WESH 2's Bob Kealing. "They're coming there for that specific smell."
According to Haskell, the tenacious insects have been known to burrow six feet into the ground or through cracks in concrete in search of one thing -- the smell of a decomposing body.
"When they're going through all these barriers, over and around and down, they're being attracted to the smell of decomposition," he said.
Haskell inspected the trunk of Anthony's car in December 2008, six months after the prosecution claims Caylee Anthony's body was inside.
In his report, he noted that a "strong decompositional odor was still present" in the trunk.
Haskell says he's smelled decomposition thousands of times and he wouldn't mistake the familiar odor for anything else.
Orlando criminal defense attorney Richard Hornsby, who is not affiliated with the Anthony case, says the flies identified by Haskell provide a scientific basis for prosecutors to argue that Anthony was driving around with her daughter's corpse in the car.
"There's little doubt this is going to be compelling evidence for the jury," he believes.
Theory Says Time Isn't On Casey's Side
"This is reliable because it's worked in hundreds if not thousands of cases."
- Neal Haskelll
Using the same formula that he teaches forensic entomology students at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Haskell was able to use insects that were found at the Suburban Drive crime scene and compare them with Florida temperatures that summer to come up with an estimate of when Caylee Anthony's remains were dumped there.
"This is reliable because it's worked in hundreds if not thousands of cases," Haskell says.
According to the his estimates, Caylee Anthony's remains were placed in the area off of Suburban Drive in late June to early July, while Casey Anthony was still free.
Haskell's scientific opinion could blow up any attempts by the defense team to create reasonable doubt by suggesting that the remains were placed in the woods in October, after Anthony was locked up in the Orange County Jail.
Anthony's murder trial is scheduled to begin in May.

Casey Anthony trial continues: Cadaver dog handler tells court he was 'overwhelmed' by smell of death in trunk of Anthony's car
A sniffer dog trained to detect human corpses homed in on the boot of Casey Anthony’s car and on a patch of grass in front of her dead daughter’s playhouse, a court in Florida heard today.
Gerus, a German Shepherd dog working with Orange County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit during the search for missing toddler Caylee Anthony in July 2008, indicated that he could smell human death in the back of Anthony’s Pontiac Sunfire car, and at a spot in the garden of her home in Orlando.
The canine detective, who is trained only to hunt for human remains and to ignore distractions such as food and other odours, twice gave his handler an indication known as a 'final trained alert' to indicate that it had pinpointed a scent source.
