Kaine Horman waits for break in Kyron case
The father of Kyron Horman warns the case for his missing young son may drag on for two, three or even four years.
And even then, the investigation into what happened to the missing boy may not be resolved.
During a two-hour interview with KGW, Kaine Horman provided insight into the nearly year-long investigation. If there is no major break in the case, this will be a marathon, not a sprint, according to Kaine Horman.
Kyron was last seen on June 4th, 2010. Through winter and early spring, search crews scoured an area near Skyline Boulevard in Northwest Portland. They found nothing. They also unsuccessfully searched areas on Sauvie Island.

Kyron Horman's dad: Anniversary will be rough
Kyron Horman's father told KGW there will be no big event to mark the one-year anniversary of his son's disappearance.
“There is no day that is more or less important to me. They are all equally as important until he gets home,” said Kaine Horman.
In a lengthy interview with KGW, Kaine Horman said he has relied on a group of friends for support during the past year.
“Some days are tougher than others," said Horman. "Nothing has been harder than Christmas. Just having an empty house for the first time, pretty much ever, that was tough.”
The missing boys father says he is grateful for the hundreds of hugs, emails and letters of support that he's received over the past 11 months.

Kyron's Mom Admits Doubts About Search For Son
Almost one year after 7-year-old Kyron Horman was last seen at a Portland elementary school, his mother admitted he might not be alive.
In an exclusive interview with FOX 12, Desiree Young said she is positive that Kyron’s stepmother, Terri Horman, is responsible for his disappearance.
“I think that Terri, the way she felt and what she put in writing, I really don't see her letting him live,” Young said.
The missing boy’s mom said she broke down yesterday when she heard about a little boy whose body was found in Maine.
Police there called investigators in Multnomah County, who later confirmed the body was not Kyron’s.
Young says she’s prepared for the worst possible news about her son but she still prays for his return.

Kyron's stepmom Terri remains low-profile.
After 7-year old Kyron Horman disappeared from his Portland school, both his mother and stepmother appeared to console each other at a news conference while the family asked the public for help. But soon after that time his stepmother Terri Horman became a person of interest in the investigation. Since then she hasn’t been seen much at all.

One year on... and the mother of missing Kyron Horman has not given up, erecting billboards that promise 'I will find you'
A large billboard by the side of the road shows seven-year-old Kyron Horman, with his close-cropped blonde hair and glasses - his face forever frozen in an adorable smile.
The message written above the boy's pictures is simple yet determined: 'I promise I will find you. I will never stop. Love, Momma.'
Kyron has been missing for almost a year now - having been last seen by his stepmother at Skyline Elementary School on June 4 - and the sign is one of several in Roseburg, Oregon.

No sign of Kyron Horman as anniversary of disappearance approaches;
Oregonian staff writer Lynne Terry has written a retrospective on the sad case of Kyron Horman. It's been almost a year since the Portland boy disappeared and, as Terry reports, his parents are trying to re-establish their routines. Meanwhile, the investigation hasn't turned up any signs of the boy.
Kyron's parents, Kaine Horman and Desiree Young are back at work, trying to re-establish routines, with Young in Medford and Horman in the Portland area. Both, who have lost weight from stress, see therapists. They say each day is a struggle.
Neither has spoken with Kyron's stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman. Since Kaine Horman filed for divorce in mid-July and obtained a restraining order over an alleged murder-for-hire plot, Terri Horman has been holed up at her childhood home in Roseburg with her parents and son James, now 17.
Laminated signs on the door and a window of the blue one-story house at the end of a street say the family is not commenting, telling reporters to call Stephen Houze, Terri Horman's high-profile defense attorney in Portland.
Mainly, she stays inside, says neighbor Jim Manley, who's lived next door to the Moultons for 15 years.
"She doesn't have a job," he says. "She doesn't go out much. I don't see visitors over there. I think she's limiting contact with people."

Kyron Horman's mother Desiree Young faces painful anniversary;
... The Oregonian this morning reports on the approaching one-year
anniversary of Kyron Horman's disappearance with a look at how the boy's parents are faring and an update on the investigation.
Lynne Terry interviewed Kyron's mother Desiree Young and father Kaine Horman for this morning's report. Both say they are trying to reestablish routines but struggle with the overwhelming sadness of their young son's disappearance.
Of Young, Terry writes:
Sitting on a comfy sofa in her living room, Desiree Young clicks through an album on a laptop. Her eyes glow at a photo of her son as an infant splashing in the bath. Then she giggles at another shot, remembering how they made peanut butter cookies together and let Ernie, their yellow lab, lick the spoon.
These simple scenes of easy joy give Young some solace, but they don't blunt the pain that's persisted since her son Kyron Horman disappeared June 4. Every day since then, Young has struggled, fighting back tears in public, grappling with anger and thrashing herself with blame. Mornings are tough, she says. Going to sleep is difficult. And often, she's jolted awake by a recurring nightmare of trying to protect him from danger.
And Kaine Horman, Terry writes, remains focused on trying to bring his son home.
For weeks after his son disappeared, Kaine Horman kept Kyron's door closed, ensuring that his young daughter didn't play with the toys and that the bedroom stayed intact, ready to welcome him home.
But nearly a year has passed since June 4, when Kyron was last seen at Skyline School. The bedroom door is now open. All of the furniture that belonged to Horman's estranged wife, Terri Moulton Horman, is gone. His daughter, Kiara, now 2, sometimes wanders in and picks things up.
"At some point you have to come to the conclusion that what's happened has happened and whether I distance myself from his stuff or immerse myself in it, it doesn't change what's happened," Horman says. "So why make a shrine out of it? Why protect it?"

Fundraiser for Kyron
This Saturday will mark one year since 7-year-old Kyron Horman disappeared in Portland.
There's been no sign of him since then, but it's not stopping family and friends in Medford from trying to help.
At the Women's Fitness Company in Medford, they have dedicated the entire week to raise money to find Kyron, and to show support for his mother Desiree Young, who is a member here.
This week, the gym will be accepting donations, and giving part of the proceeds from drink sales to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Fund.
So far the search has cost more than $1.4 million, and has taken in more than $32,000 in donations since last year.

Year Later, Desiree Young Still Points Finger At Terri Horman
Desiree Young: 'I Really Don't See (Terri Horman) Letting Him Live'
The mother of Kyron Horman says in the weeks leading up to his disappearance, life inside his home was falling apart and he was becoming his stepmother’s target.
Kyron vanished from Skyline School almost one year ago. Investigators say he was last seen by his stepmother, Terri Horman, at an early-morning science fair.
Desiree Young, Kyron’s mother, said she believes Terri Horman took Kyron from the school and then set a plan in motion to get rid of him.
“I think that it was one of those things where everything worked out that day, but if something had derailed her, I think she would have given up what she was doing. But I think because everything fell in line, she continued with her plan, her checklist,” Young said.
Young and her husband, Tony Young, live in Medford and before he went missing, Kyron’s homebase was in Portland with his father, Kaine Horman, and Terri Horman.
Young said that Terri Horman blamed the boy for her troubles.
“She blamed Kyron for a lot of her and Kaine's marital problems. She blamed Kyron for a lot of stuff that was going on in the house. It was becoming very tense and it all came down to the weekend. It came down to that day and she was very angry,” Young said.

New Billboards About Kyron's Case
Kyron Horman's mother isn't giving up.
This week marks one year since the little boy disappeared from his Portland school.
Desiree Young recently put up several more billboards all across the state with the goal of keeping the case fresh in people's minds.
Young also says she's aimed them at the conscience of Kyron's stepmother Terri Moulton Horman.
Young suspects that Moulton Horman is responsible and dangerous.
The investigators say they suspect Moulton Horman offered her landscaper money to kill the boy.
But they didn't arrest her because of a lack of evidence.
Detectives and the FBI are still investigating the case.

Kaine Horman: 'You've Got To Keep Going, You've Got To Find Him'
Ever since his son vanished from Skyline School in northwest Portland one year ago, Kaine Horman has been on the news, in the papers and in the middle of a major investigation.
But through it all, Horman says, he is still just a father who desperately misses his son, Kyron Horman.
"You really have to make the choice of, are you going to pick yourself up and go, or are you going to curl up in a ball in a dark room and sit there?" Horman said. "And, unfortunately, the latter is what you feel emotionally more of, but that doesn't get anything done. That doesn't help."
With friends and volunteers by his side, Horman has been hosting fundraisers and awareness events, talking to anyone who will listen in hopes of getting the word out about his son.
But Horman's anger lies with the one person who he says won't listen or talk about what happened to his son. As he has stated in the past, he still believes his estranged wife, Terri Horman, is responsible for Kyron's disappearance.

Kyron Horman investigation to take on 'technical focus,' sheriff's office says
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office announced this afternoon that the investigation into the disappearance of Kyron Horman will take on a "more technical focus" as the case enters its second year.
Lt. Mary Lindstrand, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, issued a news release saying that the agencies involved will "be concentrating on technology based forensics, data entry and review of information compiled, leads and specific tasks that have been identified for the investigation, along with continued case development."
In addition, Sheriff Dan Staton said the task force assembled to look for Kyron will be disbanded as of July 1. But that doesn't mean law-enforcement officials will quit looking for Kyron.

Kyron Horman task force to disband July 1 -- but will reform if 'something breaks,' sheriff says
A lead detective from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office will continue to work full-time investigating the now yearlong disappearance of Kyron Horman with help from the FBI, state Department of Justice and county prosecutors.
But a formalized task force will disband as of July 1, Sheriff Dan Staton said Thursday.
"We're not going to call it a task force anymore," Staton said. "If something breaks, then we'll bring everybody back together."
In an interview with The Oregonian Thursday, the sheriff pledged that the investigation into the second-grader's disappearance from Skyline School on June 4, 2010, will remain active until Kyron is found, there's an arrest, or until there are no further leads to pursue or data to examine. Detectives who were loaned to the task force in October from the Portland Police Bureau, Clackamas County and Washington County sheriff's offices, and Oregon State Police are being pulled back to their respective agencies.
"Obviously I'm disappointed we haven't found him, we haven't made an arrest, but I'm not disappointed with the progress of the investigation," Staton said. "There isn't a night I don't think any of us don't wish we had come to a conclusion by now."
Multnomah County Sheriff's detectives, FBI agents and up to four state justice department investigators have spent the past six months examining at least 60 persons of interest in the disappearance of Kyron from his school.

Terri Horman's Neighbors Say She Keeps Quiet In Roseburg
Saturday will mark the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of Kyron Horman, who vanished from a northwest Portland school after an early-morning science fair.
In the past 12 months, despite an exhaustive investigation, Multnomah County detectives have not named a suspect or a person of interest in the boy's disappearance.
But from the beginning, Kyron's stepmother, Terri Horman, has been the focus of suspicion.
Terri Horman is now living with her parents, Larry and Carol Moulton, on a quiet neighborhood street in Roseburg.
No one answered the door when a FOX 12 reporter stopped by the home. A sign posted on the front door refers all media questions to lawyer Stephen Houze, but Houze has continued to say he cannot comment on an open case.
Jeff Manley, a longtime friend to Larry and Carol Moulton, says he knows Terri Horman's parents are suffering.
"The people and the neighborhood, mostly people's sympathies are all for Mr. and Mrs. Moulton," he said. "They feel very bad for them. They know them -- they're good people."
Manley said the community feels differently about Terri Horman. While she may have a history in the town, Manely thinks that's where it ends.
"She's been around here for a while, but she has her problems and people have forgotten about her, and there are different opinions about that," said Manley, who lives in the same neighborhood as the Moultons. "But the support system around here is for her parents."

Kyron Horman has been missing for 1 year; mom believes stepmother took his life
Saturday will be the one year anniversary of the vanishing of Kyron Horman. His biological mother, Desiree Young remains steadfast in her belief that the last person who saw him alive is responsible for his disappearance and likely took his life.
Kyron disappeared on June 4, 2010, after attending a Portland area school science fair with his stepmother Terri Horman. She told authorities she last saw the then 7-year-old heading to his classroom that morning. Kyron never made it to class and has not been seen since.

With scaled back investigation, Kyron's parents not giving up
At her home in Medford, Desiree Young keeps the mementos that have meant so much to her as she's dealt with the disappearance of her son, Kyron Horman.
She cherishes one woman's sentiments the most: They are notes that are supportive and spiritual.
"They always come when I need them," she said last week during an interview.
On Saturday, it will be a year since Kyron disappeared from his elementary school in Northwest Portland.
Young refutes the idea that investigators had tunnel vision when it came to Kyron's case and that they too quickly zeroed in on his stepmother, Terri Horman, the last person known to have been seen with him at his school science fair.
"It’s Terri without a doubt," she said. "And it's not just because we’ve been focused on her, we haven't. We've looked at every single possible option. Every single one. … There's no tunnel vision. They've investigated everybody in our lives."

Skyline School gathering honors Kyron Horman, 1 year after disappearance
Dozens of volunteers, armed with gloves and gardening tools, are gathering at Skyline School outside Northwest Portland on Saturday to honor Kyron Horman.
It's been exactly a year since the boy was last seen at the school during a science fair. His father, Kaine Horman, and the school's principal, Ben Keefer, decided that the best tribute to Kyron would be a community work day focused on beautifying the school grounds, which cover nearly six acres.
As many as 200 people are expected to help. The agenda for the day includes weeding, edging and spreading bark and soil.

A year later, Kyron's disappearance still a painful story
Desiree Young says she will spend sad anniversary remembering her missing son
At the end of this first-person essay by reporter Jennifer Anderson you can read Desiree Young’s statement on the anniversary of her son’s disappearance.
A year ago, I remember hearing the news. It was like a gut-punch to every parents’ emotions: A 7-year-old boy with spiky hair, glasses and a toothy grin — a striking resemblance to my son’s best friend — had vanished from his school in an isolated part of rural Multnomah County.

Kyron's Grandma: 'We just need to find him, bring him home'
The search for Kyron Horman hit a somber milestone on Saturday morning; it’s been one year since his parents have seen the boy alive.
Kaine Horman, Kyron’s father, said a year later he still is working to keep people thinking about his son’s case. He also wanted to mark the day by doing something his son would be proud of.
Saturday morning Kaine and other volunteers gathered at Skyline Elementary School in Northwest Portland to hold a community work day. They tackled landscaping and gardening projects at Kyron’s school, which is also the last place he was seen.
“It’s one of this favorite places to be. He spent a lot of time up here and hopefully he’ll spend a lot more time as well,” Kaine said.
