Bookal boy's grandparents hoping for answers

KINGSTON — The Rev. Grace Coston was lying in bed, watching a cop drama on TV Tuesday night, when her mind flashed to the fate of her missing grandson, Marc Bookal.

"All I could think was that maybe he was abducted and sold," she told the Times Herald-Record. "That's what I hoped, anyway."

Those hopes were dashed Wednesday when City of Newburgh police discovered the remains of a small body who they believe is Marc, the 4-year-old boy who had been missing since December.

Cory Byrd has spotty history with the law

CITY OF NEWBURGH — The last time Cory Byrd got into serious trouble, he sent a hand-written letter to a judge, asking for mercy in a felony assault case from 2003: "Your Honor, I was never one of those types of kids who stayed in trouble in and out of jail. That was not me."

But Byrd returned to state prison two weeks ago, having violated the terms of his parole in that assault case when police charged him in December with endangering the welfare of 4-year-old Marc Bookal.

Now police believe they've found Marc's body, and that could spell more trouble for Byrd.

Since December, Byrd, 30, has been the focus of attention as police investigated the boy's disappearance. Christina Bookal, Marc's mother, had left the 4-year-old in Byrd's care when Marc vanished Dec. 14.

Boy's Body Was Inside Bag Along Newburgh Road

It's clear to the eye how almost tantalizingly close to the street is the place where the child's remains were found. But, police say, one must remember how cold it was when he went missing, which they say threw off dogs looking for a scent.

On Thursday, an autopsy was performed on the body. Newburgh Police Chief Eric Paolilli said only DNA can confirm the remains are of Bookal, but he did say police believe it is the boy.

"Since we do not have any other reports of any other missing children in the city or, in fact, in any kind of proximity that would lend credibility that this would be anybody else, that we have come to that conclusion," he said.

Paolilli said both parents also believe it is their son. CBS 2 learned the boy was found inside a black bag, like a large bookbag.

The area where the body was found was marked by detectives with orange paint. Three months of searching was also three months of pain, ending with the grim discovery.

CITY OF NEWBURGH — Chief Eric Paolilli said police must wait for DNA tests to identify the remains of a child found just blocks from missing 4-year-old Marc Bookal's house.

A state police cadaver dog on Wednesday discovered the body in an overgrown lot just west of South Colden Street. Orange County Medical Examiner Charles Catanese conducted an autopsy on Thursday.

Positive ID on child's body could take a month

NEWBURGH – There have been no other missing children in Newburgh in recent months, Newburgh City Police Chief Eric Paolilli Thursday afternoon said it is likely the body found in a wooded area Wednesday is that of Marc Bookal, the 4-year-old who went missing in early December of last year.

An autopsy was continuing Thursday afternoon, but the chief said all they can confirm is that the body was that of a young boy.

DNA tests will be needed to confirm the identity, and that can take a month, or more.

Newburgh - City of Newburgh Police say they have found the human remains of a young child and believe they could be those of Marc Anthony Bookal, the missing four-year-old Newburgh boy, who disappeared last December. Last Wednesday, at a 5 p.m. news conference, Police Chief Eric Paolilli said the body was found by a State Police cadaver search team about 11 a.m. in a wooded area off Colden Street, between Renwick Street and South William Street. The area was previously searched by police.

Police ID Body In Bag As Missing Newburgh Boy

Newburgh police confirmed Friday that the remains of a child found inside a garbage bag along the side of a road last month were that of missing 4-year-old Marc Bookal, CBS 2 has learned.

A police cadaver dog located the body littered within a small wood pile on March 24 off South Colden Street near Renwick Street.

Police did not release details about how the boy was killed, but said he was murdered.

Body IDed as missing NY boy, case a homicide

Newburgh police say a small body found in a wooded city lot was that of a 4-year-old boy who went missing in December.

They say Marc Anthony Bookal's death has been ruled a homicide, but they released no other details Friday about how the toddler died.

The boy disappeared Dec. 14 from his mother's apartment in Newburgh, 60 miles north of New York City. An extensive search at the time was fruitless. The search resumed on March 24 and a police dog quickly found the remains.

Funeral Held For Four-Year-Old Newburgh Boy‎
Friends, Family Mourn Death Of Marc Bookal After Months-Long Disappearance Ends In Tragedy

The parents and friends of Marc Bookal were finally able to hold a funeral for the four-year-old Saturday, four months after his disappearance.

Police believe the child was murdered before Christmas, but the remains weren't discovered until after the weather warmed and snow melted.

The murdered boy's father choked on his own grief under the ceiling fans at House of Refuge Church in Newburgh. The long-delayed funeral of young Marc Bookal drew hundreds of mourners, each of whom lived through grim months of searching for the missing boy and not knowing.

But there is no doubt now. The child is dead, and it is impossibly difficult to say goodbye.

"I'll miss you, son," father Yul Bookal said.

Yul Bookal was led away, to a place only a few seats from his ex-wife and the boy's mother, Christina. That her live-in boyfriend is suspected in the boy's death only darkens the web of grief and suspicion.
