Search underway in Cape Breton for missing autistic boy as storm closes in

With a snowstorm bearing down on Atlantic Canada, a search and rescue helicopter equipped with night-vision gear joined the search late Saturday for an autistic boy who wandered away from his home in rural Cape Breton - without a winter coat.

Seven-year-old James Delorey was apparently following the family's dog when he walked into the woods near South Bar at around 2 p.m.

The brown-haired boy, who weighs about 60 pounds, was wearing dark jeans, a blue plaid shirt and a grey-coloured vest, police said.

The temperature was hovering just above freezing late Saturday and the forecast was calling for rain and up to 15 centimetres of snow on Sunday.

CB boy dies overnight in hospital

Little James Delorey passed away early Tuesday morning at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, a sad end to a desperate two-day search near Sydney for the youngster.

Jocelyn Vine, vice-president of patient care at the hospital, told reporters shortly before 10:30 a.m. that the seven-year-old autistic boy from South Bar passed away despite the efforts of staff at the hospital.

“It is with our deepest regret we advise you that James Delorey did pass away at the IWK Health Centre early this morning,” Ms. Vine said, passing on the information at the request of the family. “On behalf of the health centre, we want to express our deepest sympathies to the family during this devastating loss.”

Family members were with him at his bedside overnight, she said.

James Delorey, 7, remembered as 'nice, little boy' after dying of hypothermia

HALIFAX, N.S. — James Delorey, the Cape Breton boy who died in hospital after miraculously surviving two nights lost in the frozen wilderness, was remembered Tuesday as a calm and quiet child whose big brown eyes did most of the talking.

The seven-year-old succumbed to severe hypothermia less than a day after he was found unconscious in a densely wooded area of the island, about a kilometre from his home in South Bar, N.S.
