Man charged in Shaniya Davis money scam

Fayetteville police have charged a Parkton man with falsely taking money as donations in the name of Shaniya Davis.

Donald Roddy Jr., 36, of the 7300 block of Hypony Trail, was arrested this afternoon and charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

Police had received earlier reports about a man in the area of McPherson Church and Skibo roads holding a sign indicating he was collecting money for Shaniya from passing motorists.

A search warrant has revealed that 29-year-old Mario McNeill told investigators he took Shaniya Davis last week from her home in Fayetteville to a hotel in Sanford, North Carolina. McNeill was captured on hotel surveillance cameras holding the little girls in his arms on the elevator.

Shaniya Davis cause of death asphyxiation, autopsy shows she was raped (video)

Breaking news! The Shaniya Davis cause of death is asphyxiation and the autopsy revealed that the little five year old girl was raped. Mario Andrette McNeill has been charged with rape and first degree murder in addition to first degree kidnapping charges. A live press conference was held tonight at 8:00 p.m. and the additional charges were made public.

The delay in additional charges was due to jurisdiction issues between Cumberland County and Lee County. Cumberland County is the county of Shaniya’s last known residence and Lee County is where her body was found. The case is being prosecuted through Cumberland County.

Police: NC girl raped, killed on day she was taken

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say a 5-year-old North Carolina girl was raped and killed the same day she was taken from her home.

Arrests warrants released Friday say Shaniya Davis was sexually assaulted and asphyxiated Nov. 10, the day her mother reported her missing. Authorities embarked on a nearly weeklong search that ended when the girl's body was found dumped off a rural road.

Mario McNeill is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape of a child.

The girl's mother is charged with trafficking her daughter and child abuse involving prostitution.

Sister says accused man wasn't trying to scam

A Parkton man accused of falsely taking donations in the name of Shaniya Davis thought he was doing the right thing, family members say.

Donald Roddy Jr., 36, was charged Wednesday after Fayetteville police said he solicited roadside donations in their name.

Sgt. John Somerindyke said Roddy has no affiliation with the Police Department and did not have permission to use the department's name or the names of any employees in his solicitations.

Roddy's sister, Penny McKee of Sampson County, said her older brother suffers from several mental disorders that affect his judgment. She said he likely didn't realize he was doing anything wrong.

How did McNeill's hopeful start go so wrong?

McNeill's mother came quietly into the viewing area in the tiny courtroom at the Cumberland County Detention Center. She wore shades and was dressed neatly in an orange blouse.

She took a seat across from where the reporters sat. The seat gave her the best view of her son through the glass window.

McNeill, in an orange jump suit, stood next to his lawyer. He wore a neutral expression.

Facing the judge, his right side was turned to his mother. He glanced slightly to the right, but his eyes did not appear to make it all the way to her.

She listened as Judge George Franks asked if McNeill understood he could face the death penalty and life imprisonment if convicted. He answered that he understood, and he was soon led out of the room.

A short while later, Ann Summers, mother of Antoinette Davis, came into the parking lot. She was at the detention center to set up visits with her daughter.

Antoinette Davis is the mother of the slain angel, Shaniya Davis. The mother is charged with selling her own daughter for sex.

Summers told reporters Antoinette Davis was innocent.

"She took great care of her children," she said.

She took questions and later spelled out her name and gave reporters her number.

She reserved all her anger for McNeill. Someone asked what she would say if she could speak to him. "I don't want to," she said, shaking her head. "He ain't nothing but a maggot."

On Sunday, Shaniya Davis, 5, was laid to rest as thousands at her funeral bid her farewell.

The Manna Church in Fayetteville, NC was so packed that many had to peer through windows and doors to view the moving ceremony.

Shaniya’s father, Bradley Lockhart, aunt, Carey Lockhart-Davis, and others spoke about the precious little girl who was taken from them so brutally and abruptly.

Mario McNeill enters Raleigh's Central Prison one day after another inmate is found dead

As Mario Andrette McNeill enters Raleigh's Central Prison the question is will he survive long enough to either live a life sentence or the death penalty?

On November 19, 2009 Kayin Whitfield, 28, was found unresponsive in bed. He died that night. Preliminary findings indicated that Whitfield died of natural causes. Whitfield was serving a five-month sentence for driving with a revoked license and assaulting a police officer, including damaging property. Kayin entered Central Prison on October 6, 2009.

On July 5, 2001, within the same week of entry, Craig Logan, 28, was found in "distress" by other inmates while located in the dormitory bathroom. He was pronounced dead 35 minutes later. Logan entered Central Prison to begin a life sentence after being convicted of murder.

The news of Whitfield stirred the memory of Logan to many. However, when the information of Whitfield came to light some believed that perhaps McNeill would soon die of "natural causes". Based on public records released a death inside of Central Prison from natural causes at an early age rarely happens.

Mario McNeill has be placed under suicide watch as a precaution. He also will not be sharing a cell with other inmates at this time.
