DNA confirms body found is Nevaeh

Mich St Police Crime Lab confirmed as Nevaeh

NORTHVILLE, Mich. - The Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory in Northville, Mich., said they have made a positive identification of Nevaeh Buchanan.

Investigators said DNA testing confirmed that a body found June 3 buried along the River Raisin in Rainsinville Township is 5-year-old Nevaeh.

very sad alright. It was a matter of confirmation. I hope full rigours of the law on those responsible.How they treated her is simply awful !

Almost a year and 13,000 tips later, no killer has been charged with the child's death

It's the most high-profile murder case in our area in years. Nevaeh Buchanan, 5, was taken from her home and buried alive. It happened last summer, but to this day, the crime remains unsolved.

Her name was Nevaeh-- heaven spelled backward-- and on her tombstone, she's called "Monroe's Little Angel."

Search continues for Neveah's killer



MONROE, Mich. (WUPW) - A renewed effort is underway to help catch whoever killed 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan in May 2009 in Monroe, Mich.

Posters will soon be going up all over the city. The group "Justice for Nevaeh" will hold what they are calling a poster campaign next week (download the poster).

Members are hoping to renew interest in the case and help heal a community who wants to see this little girl's killer caught.

The reward poster campaign will be this coming Monday 6-9 p.m. at the Moose Lodge Family Center on Macomb Street. A prayer service will conclude the event.

Reverend Dale Hayford of Cross Walk Community Church was searching an area behind an abandoned warehouse when he got word that the body of Nevaeh had been found.

She was covered in quickcrete, buried alive, and left at the bank of the River Raisin in Raisinville Township.

"I was searching by myself that day about 4 o'clock, 5 o'clock, and the phone call came across that they had found a body on the River Raisin," Rev. Hayford said.

The clergyman and hundreds of others began their searching soon after Nevaeh disappeared from the parking lot of her apartment complex Memorial Day Weekend in 2009.

More than 3,500 searches were performed all over Monroe County and into Lucas County near Toledo.

"Every area had been searched three to five times," Rev. Hayford said. "It was quite an effort and everybody in this community come together."

He said that what makes that fact that no suspect has been named so hard. They hope to begin to find closure by keeping her case fresh in everyone's mind.

'The community is still hurting," he said. "They want an answer. They want to find out what has happened. They are in pain and the community is still grieving over this."

Two rewards are being offered for the arrest of Nevaeh's killer. There is a $1,000 reward from Crimestoppers of Michigan and $20,000 reward from the FBI.

"We're hoping this person will turn himself in," Rev. Hayford said. "In order to find peace in their heart they are going to have to do that."

Family, friends renew effort to find Nevaeh Buchanan's killer with posters, reward

Nearly one year after two fishermen found her cement-covered body floating in the River Raisin 35 miles south of Detroit, family and friends are renewing their effort to find whoever killed five-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

Fox 2 reports nearly 100 people met Monday at the Monroe Moose Lodge for an event sponsored by the group Justice For Nevaeh. Organizers passed out 5,000 posters with hopes the publicity and still-unclaimed rewards will lead to new tips.

The FBI continues to offer a $20,000 reward, and Crimestoppers of Michigan is offering an additional $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Nevaeh's killer.

Nevaeh disappeared in June of last year and had been missing 10 days by the time the fishermen discovered her body. An autopsy revealed she may have been buried alive.

Sherry Buchanan, Nevaeh's grandmother, tells Fox 2 she believes authorities have ruled out the girl's mother, Jennifer Buchanan. But family members remain suspicious of Jennifer's ex-boyfriend, George Kennedy, a registered sex offender currently behind bars for violating his parole.

"In my heart, George knew that baby just like if it was his own kid, and I still feel right now... that he has a lot to do with it," Sherry Buchanan told the television station.

FBI Offering $20,000 Reward, Group Circulating New Fliers, Grandmother Still Suspicious


MONROE, Mich. -- Residents of the Monroe area haven't given up their search for justice for a girl who died nearly a year ago.

The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward, and Crime Stoppers of Michigan is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible for Nevaeh Buchanan's death.

Reward posters for businesses and fliers for individuals were distributed from Monday night at the Monroe Moose Family Center 884.

The distribution event was also part of a prayer service and vigil in memory of the slain 5-year-old.

Nevaeh's grandmother Sherry Buchanan attended the vigil and is still suspicious about the entire ordeal.

Amid prayers and the well wishes of others, Sherry told Local 4 that her daughter, Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, is no longer being looked at by police.

“They have talked to me many times and they have told me that they have cleared her," Buchanan said.

But she has some suspicions on the involvement of others.

Her gut tells her that George Kennedy, her daughter’s boyfriend at the time, was probably involved.

“In my heart, George treated that baby like it was his own kid…and I still feel to this day that he had something to do with it," Buchanan said.

Kennedy to this day remains locked up, not because of Nevaeh’s abduction and killing, but because of a parole violation.

Nevaeh’s mother, Jennifer Buchanan, attended the vigil, but didn’t want to talk.

Friends, family and complete strangers gathered for a prayer to remember her memory, and to hopefully never forget.

Nevaeh was 5 when she disappeared May 24, 2009, from an apartment complex in Monroe, about 35 miles south of Detroit. Her body was found 10 days later along the nearby River Raisin.

An autopsy found she suffocated after inhaling dirt. No one has been arrested.

Nevaeh Buchanan's killer still at large one year later

One year ago today, 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan disappeared. Her body was found several days later. The story made headlines across the nation, but to this day no one has ever been charged in her death. Nevaeh's murder remains a mystery.

"My whole family is still traumatized by it," says Diana Lawson, Nevaeh's great aunt. She wears a t-shirt with Nevaeh's face and drives around town with a flyer on her car to remind residents that the case of "Monroe's Little Angel" is still unsolved.

Investigators have been tight-lipped about any potential leads. Nevaeh disappeared from the Charlotte Arms Apartments in May 2009. In the days after she went missing, persons of interest surfaced, but no charges were filed. Her body, encased in cement, was then discovered by two fishermen on the bank of the River Raisin.

The sheriff's office is offering a $20,000 reward in her case.

"She was a very beautiful child, very beautiful, and still we want to know why they took her. We want to know who," says Mrs. Lawson. It is a question only investigators can answer.

MONROE, MICH. -- One year ago Monday, 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan went missing from outside her Monroe apartment complex. Just days later she was found dead. Her family is still waiting for answers.

The little girls was kidnapped while playing outside the apartment building where she lived with her mother and grandmother. After weeks of searching, Nevaeh's body was found buried in a shallow grave along the River Raisin. Her killer remains at large.

On Saturday, the Monroe community gathered to remember Nevaeh. 'I feel like if I would have seen her grow up, I would have been the happiest grandma there was," said Nevaeh's grandmother, Sherry Buchanan.

Nevaeh's mom caught between pain, anger

MONROE -- Jennifer Buchanan met with a detective and begged for information. Tidbits. Anything.

Was her 5-year-old daughter Nevaeh wearing clothes when the police found her body June 4, 2009? Could she just see them? Could she touch them?

She needed details to help her deal with the frustration and anger that had built up in the year that had passed since her little girl was abducted and killed.

"I told them, 'If you guys don't have anything, just tell me,' " she said. "They are keeping us in suspense."

Detectives from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office say they are trying to keep some details secret, things only the child's killer would know. And they refused to let her see the clothes found in the shallow grave by the River Raisin.

"It's very frustrating," said Buchanan, 25, of Monroe. "I hope and pray every day they are going to come to me and tell me something, but it just doesn't happen."

For months, Buchanan refused to talk to the news media, and rumors swirled. Some say she was involved in Nevaeh's killing. Others say she knows more than she lets on.
