Police are confident they'll find girl's killer

Investigators said they need additional corroborating evidence to make an arrest and are waiting for the final piece of the puzzle.

They plan to use a new piece of investigative equipment that is expected to move the inquiry forward, Lynch said. "It's something that came up in the last few months."

For now, he's not discussing details. "We just can't explain what the equipment is," Lynch added, "because if we explained when we were going to do it and what the equipment was, it could expose information to a perpetrator."

Floyd man, questioned in Evelyn Miller death, pleads guilty to meth charge

Casey Frederiksen - a man questioned in connection with the murder of 5-year-old Evelyn Miller - has pleaded guilty in federal court to a meth-related charge.

Frederiksen, 30, of Floyd, entered the plea today in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

Frederiksen went to prison on a child pornography charge and currently is housed at the United States Penitentiary in Marion, Ill.

Danny Slick, one of the last people to see Evelyn alive, was sentenced in February 2007 to one year and one day in prison for lying to FBI agents investigating Evelyn's disappearance.

Noel Miller served two days in jail in 2007 on a charge of going armed with intent. She also lost her bid to get custody of the two young sons she had with Fredericksen, who were put in foster care shortly after Evelyn’s murder.

No one has ever been charged in Evelyn's death.

Evelyn's case remains an open, active investigation.

Casey Frederiksen Facing More Time for Drug Charges

CEDAR RAPIDS - A Floyd man already in federal prison for having child pornography is going to spend even more time behind bars.

A judge sentenced Casey Frederiksen to ten more years in prison, this time for drug charges.

In a plea agreement, Frederiksen admitted in 2004 and 2005 he repeatedly got meth in exchange for stolen pseudoephedrine pills. Frederiksen admits he provided those stolen pseudoephedrine to meth makers.

Frederiksen was questioned about the Evelyn Miller murder four years ago. He was engaged to Evelyn Miller's mother and was watching the five-year-old girl when she disappeared from their apartment in Floyd in July 2005. Her body was found along the Cedar River several days later. No one has been arrested for her murder.

However, the 14-year sentence Frederiksen is currently serving is not connected to the Evelyn Miller murder investigation. During the search for the missing girl investigators found child porn images on Frederiksen's computer. And that discovery led to the federal child porn case.

Figures in Evelyn Miller case went separate ways

FLOYD --- Evelyn Miller was reported missing on a Friday morning, July 1, 2005.

Her mother, Noel Miller, reportedly arrived at her apartment from her overnight work shift at a nursing home about 6:20 a.m.

She found her live-in boyfriend, Casey Frederiksen, and the couple's two younger children at home. But not her 5-year-old daughter, Evelyn.

Frederiksen claimed Evelyn was well when he went to sleep and that he did not know where the little girl was.

Hundreds of volunteers combed nearby fields surrounding the rural building, hoping the girl simply wandered away during the night.

Later, two Charles City residents --- Danny Slick and Randy Patrie --- told law enforcement officials they had seen Evelyn at about 2 a.m. on the morning she disappeared.

According to their story, Evelyn answered the door when they arrived. Patrie and Slick said she was fine when they left.

Evelyn's body was later found in the Cedar River about two miles from her home. Officials have never revealed the cause of death.

Frederiksen, 31, in 2006 was sentenced to up to 14 years in prison on three counts of possession and receiving child pornography. In 2009, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on methamphetamine charges. He is incarcerated in the federal penitentiary in Marion, Ill. His anticipated release will be in 2026.

Noel Miller, 27, reportedly lives in California. In 2007, she was charged with going armed with intent after she placed a 911 call to police. When officers responded, they found Miller had a knife concealed under her sleeve.

Slick, 31, was convicted and sentenced to a year and one day in prison for lying to federal authorities during the Miller investigation. He was released in October 2009.

Evelyn Miller Remembered, Five Years After Disappearance

CHARLES CITY -- It was five years ago today that a little girl went missing in a small northeast Iowa town.

Evelyn Miller vanished from her family's Floyd County home in July of 2005. Days later, a kayaker found the 5-year-old girl's body in the Cedar River near Charles City.

Authorities still have not arrested anyone for her murder. The apartment building where Evelyn lived is now an ethanol plant.

Even though the original crime scene is gone, authorities say they still continue to work on the case.

Casey Frederiksen back in Iowa facing Evelyn Miller murder charge

A man charged with the murder and sexual abuse of a 5 year old girl from Floyd had his initial appearance in court today.
33-year-old Casey Frederiksen is officially back in Iowa and is in the custody of the Division of Criminal Investigation.
He has been serving time in an Illinois prison for child pornography charges.
Frederiksen is being charged with the murder and sexual assault of 5-year-old Evelyn Miller back in 2005.
She went missing in July of that year in Floyd, and six days later her body was found in the Cedar river.
Frederiksen was charged last month for the death.
It's the first movement in the Evelyn Miller murder case in seven years.

"Mr. Frederiksen, the state of Iowa has charged you with the crime of murder in the first degree," said Magistrate Ann Troge.

And on this day, north Iowans are getting the chance to see the man accused of killing the 5 year old in 2005.

"You also have the right of self incrimination. Anything you said can be used against you, so you are wise to remain silent like you have thus far," Magistrate Troge said

The goal of this court proceeding is to hammer out a few logistical details- like setting a preliminary hearing date and bail.

Magistrate Troge said, "It's been my pattern over the years that any class "A" charge, you bond one million dollars for each complaint cash only in your name."

The 2 million dollar bail is set, and a concern for Frederiksen's safety is addressed.

"The court is concerned about any death threats you may have had if you have any questions about your security in any future proceedings I would ask you direct them to the sheriff's office," said Magistrate Troge.

As the magistrate wraps up this court appearance, it's clear these proceedings are just getting started.
Frederiksen is requesting a public defender and the magistrate says he will be appointed one soon.

Before the proceedings started this morning, the magistrate addressed the request for media coverage in court.
Even though Frederiksen voiced his concerns, she did allow it saying it's newsworthy and of great interest to the public - considering the amount of time that's passed.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday October 26th at 11 am in Charles City, but trial information could be filed before that, making that appearance un-necessary.

Court action set in Evelyn Miller murder case

The arraignment has been set for the man accused of killing a 5-year-old Floyd girl in 2005.

Casey Frederiksen, 33, is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in Floyd County District Court in Charles City.

Frederiksen is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual abuse in the July 1, 2005, death of Evelyn Miller, 5, Floyd.

Floyd County Attorney Normand Klemesrud filed trial information Wednesday listing the two charges against Frederiksen.

Frederiksen will enter a plea at his arraignment.

Klemesrud said he expects Frederiksen’s attorney to file a written arraignment and plea. That means the defendant will not appear in court on Nov. 5.

Frederiksen is being held in the Floyd County Jail under $2 million bond.

He was serving time in a federal prison in Illinois on child pornography and drug charges before he was brought back to Iowa to face charges in connection with Miller’s murder.

Frederiksen was the boyfriend of Evelyn's mother, Noel Miller.
