Man bailed again over daughter's skull find

The father of a teenage mother whose skeletal remains were found in woodland near Hastings has had his bail further extended after being arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Tony Couchman, 45, the father of 19-year-old Victoria Couchman, was re-bailed by officers from Sussex Police to return to Eastbourne Custody Centre on February 17.

He was arrested after children playing in Redgeland Wood in the Queensway area of St Leonards found a skull in October.

Further human remains were later found around the scene and medical records were used to identify them as those of Ms Couchman, who lived with her father about a mile from the woodland.

Sussex Police have not named the arrested man but sources confirmed he was Ms Couchman's father. Detectives believe the single mother went missing some time in May this year.

Father is re-arrested over murder

The father of a 19-year-old woman whose remains were found in woods near their home has been re-arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Sussex Police said Tony Couchman, 45, was questioned on Thursday and released on bail until 30 March.

The skeletal remains of his daughter Victoria were found in woods near their home in East Sussex on 13 October.

Mr Couchman was first arrested in connection with her death five days after the discovery.

Couchman also pleaded not guilty to a charge of perverting the course of justice in connection with the murder investigation during the hearing at Lewes Crown Court.

The offence is alleged to have been carried out between October 18 last year and April 17.

A date for his trial was fixed for January 4 next year.

It is expected to last between five and six weeks.

Couchman, who stood in the dock wearing glasses and a blue shirt, was remanded in custody until December 4 when an administration hearing will be heard at the court.

Reports suggest he had slashed his wrists, and police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Couchman's family have issued a statement which said they are still convinced he was innocent of the charges and paid tribute to "a loving father."

Detective Chief Inspector Adam Hibbert, who led the investigation, said: "This is obviously a very tragic conclusion to what was already a desperately sad case."
