Sligo gardaí issued a renewed appeal on Thursday for the public's help in finding a 14-year-old girl who has been missing for nearly two months. Melissa Mahon was last seen at her home in Rathbraughan Park, Sligo on September 13 last. Her mother, Mary Mahon, said that she believes the girl to be still in the Sligo area and that she had returned from England last year to bring up her children in a safer environment. Melissa is 5ft tall, of thin build, with long black hair and a pale complexion. Anyone with information should contact the gardaí in Sligo at 071-9157000.

Merly am I losing my marbles? I have been following this case for a long time and thought I included it somewhere. Maybe I just can't find it. I'm shocked at the latest news, as it is local news and I don't live anywhere near there, so didn't hear.
Vonb, when you see this, did I miss something on RTE news? Can't believe I didn't hear this and it is very distressing.

Lake body identification 'weeks' away
GARDAI probing the disappearance of teen Melissa Mahon may have to call in international DNA experts to identify human remains removed from Lough Gill in Sligo last week.
Sources close to the investigation say it could take weeks or longer before a positive identification of the remains is made.
The 14-year-old was initially thought to have run away but the investigation took a sinister twist over two weeks ago when gardai, acting on information received, began searching Lough Gill on the outskirts of the town where skeletal remains were then discovered.
A local man in his forties, who claims to be a suspect, has denied being involved in a sexual relationship with the teen or having anything to do with her disappearance.
But breaking her silence yesterday, her mother said she believed her daughter was having a relationship with the man.
Carmel Mahon told how the man had befriended her daughter. "She said nothing was happening but she kept going back. I would tell her not to go back there but she would sneak out the window at night time and go there," she said.
The man has never been formally questioned by gardai about the disappearance. He has insisted that his connection with the young teen was a father-daughter type bond.

Bizarre Abuse Case in Sligo
DETECTIVES are investigating horror claims of sex-abuse and murder of a teenage girl after skeletal human remains were recovered from Lough Gill in Co. Sligo.
Although Gardai (police) still cannot say whether the remains are male or female, they believe the bones are those of 14-year-old Melissa Mahon, who disappeared more than 18 months ago from her home in Sligo town.
Initially it was thought the youngster, who hadn’t settled since her family moved into the area two years earlier, had returned to England.
But the focus shifted dramatically three weeks ago when two sisters with whom Melissa was acquainted told detectives she had been murdered by their father.
The sisters, now aged 15 and 16 and in the care of authorities, also claimed they had been r*ped by their own father and that he was the parent of a baby the youngest girl gave birth to recently.
The girls gave detectives precise details of how they claim the murder was carried out. They said their father, who had been conducting an illicit affair with Melissa, strangled her in an upstairs bedroom of their home in September 2006 and wrapped the body in a blanket or sleeping bag.
They said he then forced them to help him carry the bundle down the stairs where it was put in a car trunk before being driven to the shores of Lough Gill and dumped in the lake made famous by W.B. Yeats in his poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree.”
Just two weeks after the sisters’ claims the skeletal remains were recovered close to a spot where they said Melissa’s body was dumped. Pieces of a sleeping bag were also recovered.
However, despite private suspicions, police insist the remains cannot be identified until extensive DNA examination is carried out.

Missing Melissa: body pulled from lake
A BODY found at the bottom of a lake in the west of Ireland is thought to be that of a young teenage girl from London.
For the last week the usually picturesque Lough Gill in Co. Sligo has been the scene of an intensive garda investigation, connected with the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl in 2006.
The horror unfolded as human remains were pulled from the vast watery expanse.
And it is now believed they are those of missing teenager Melissa Mahon.

Thanks Pam. I suspect that someone hasn't covered their tracks this time - the information was just too accurate to be fabricated (and a body WAS found).
Sadly, it looks like we could be moving another thread to the closed cases this week......
I have updated the news articles so that others can follow the case.

It has been a long wait but just shows these procedures take time.
