Autopsy pending on mother, daughter
BURLINGTON — The Chief Medical Examiner's office has released preliminary autopsy results for a 2-year-old girl whose body was recovered from the Wardsboro Brook on Sunday.
State Police said preliminary autopsy results confirm that the death of Grace Waring, of Wolcott, is consistent with drowning. Final autopsy results are still pending, police said.

Due to the two days of rain and significant snow melt, the water level was usually high that day and the water temperature was 36 degrees. Those who were present that day have described the brook as a raging torrent or dangerous white water conditions.
As a result of these hazardous conditions, Ms. Waring and her child were immediately swept downstream and out of Sgt. McCarthy’s reach.
Sgt. McCarthy and the other Troopers who were present, then proceeded down stream and entered the water at different locations in valiant attempts to rescue Ms. Waring and her child. The Wardsboro Fire Dept. also responded and joined the police in further rescue attempts as Ms. Waring and her child continued down stream.
At one of these locations, Vermont State Trooper Cpl. David Gerard observed Wardsboro Fire Fighter Jamie Zargo in the water tied off with a rope and in the process of making an attempt to rescue Dakota Waring from the water. Noting that the rope was not long enough to reach out into the middle of the brook, Cpl. Gerard entered the water, grabbed Zargo’s hand and extended himself further into the brook to assist Zargo in this effort. Although Cpl .Gerard was able to reach Dakota, due to the swift and dangerous current, Cpl. Gerard was swept from his feet and would have been carried downstream if not for Fire Fighter Zargo’s heroic efforts to pull Dakota and he from the water and safely to shore.
In spite of both their selfless efforts, due to the length of time in the water and the trauma from her exposure to the hazards that existed, Dakota unfortunately could not be saved.
As a result of Fire Fighter Jamie Zargo’s courageous efforts in saving the life of Cpl. Gerard, the Vermont State Police Award Committee has elected to award Mr. Zargo the department’s Life Saving Award. Although Mr. Zargo will be presented this award at the annual award’s ceremony at the State House in December, the Director of the Vermont State Police, Col. James Baker, would like to take the opportunity to also recognize Fire Fighter Zargo in front of his local community and peers.
