Missing student is feared drowned



Detectives fear a Leeds student, missing for more than a month, may have fallen into the River Aire.

Gavin Terry, 19, was last seen in the city's Revolution nightclub in the early hours of 11 January.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have found personal items belonging to Gavin while walking near the river.

A police spokesman said: "People do go walking in the area and we would like to hear from anyone who may have found anything bearing Gavin's name."

Thousands of people have signed up to pages on the social networking site Facebook which are dedicated to finding him.

Post mortem due to be carried out on Leeds beck body



The spokesman said detectives had ruled out the body being that of missing Leeds Metropolitan University student Gavin Terry, 19, who disappeared after a night out in Leeds city centre on January 12.

‘Now please go and find my missing Gavin’

The mother of missing Baildon teenager Gavin Terry has urged West Yorkshire Police to channel their efforts into finding her son - more than two months after he disappeared without a trace.

Philomena Terry spoke out after police discovered nine-year-old schoolgirl Shannon Matthews following one of the biggest manhunts the force has carried out in recent years.

Twenty-four days after going missing - and following a huge poster campaign which attracted national press coverage - Shannon was found alive on Friday, concealed in the base of a divan bed in a house just half a mile from her home.

Now Mrs Terry, of Luis Court, Baildon, said she hoped that West Yorkshire Police would re-direct its focus back to the hunt for missing Gavin, 19.

Age at disappearance: 19

Gavin has been missing from Leeds, West Yorkshire since 11 January 2008. His current whereabouts are unknown.

There is great concern for Gavin as his disappearance is out of character. He is urged to get in touch and can call the confidential service Message Home on Freefone 0800 700 740.

Gavin is 6ft 2in tall and of medium build, with short ginger hair. When last seen, Gavin was wearing blue jeans and a white short sleeved shirt.

What sad news to read......and how terribly sad for the family.

I hadn't heard about this teenager until I came across the article on 15th March after Shannon was found. It actually appeared in a search I did for Shannon - and then I looked around for more information.

It hit the local news....but no further. Are there so many missing children/teenagers now that only a few get the national media attention?

Gavin inquest adjourned

Can I also say the funeral will be at St Cuthbert's Church in Wilmer Road, Heaton, on Thursday, April 3, at 6pm.

There will be a requiem Mass on Friday, April 4, followed by an interment in Bingley.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Missing People and a plate will be available at the funeral.

Coroner blasts Binge Britain after student drowns in river

A coroner has warned about the dangers of binge drinking after a student left a party and drowned.

Gavin Terry, 19, had been drinking heavily with fellow students in a hall of residence at Leeds Metropolitan University in January this year.

A Leeds inquest heard that the revellers were drinking yards of ale and vodka.

Gavin was last seen on CCTV near a road leading to the River Aire.

His body was found two months later in the river on the outskirts of Leeds, and tests showed that he was two and a half times over the drink-drive limit.
