Keaton's attorney talks to FOX10 News
The stepmother accused of abusing a five-year-old and three-year-old whose remains were later found, is still in Metro Jail. Heather Keaton's Attorney recently came in from Birmingham to meet with her for the first time.
FOX10 News caught up with Attorney Darryl Bender outside Metro Jail, moments after he had a face-to-face meeting with Keaton.
"Physically she is doing good, but I think emotionally and psychologically she is probably not at her best, but under the circumstances she is sort of coping," said Bender.
Bender is trying to learn as much information as possible. Keaton and John Deblase are both jailed in connection with the deaths and disposal of the bodies believed to be her stepchildren, Natalie and Jonathan. Deblase is facing two counts of felony murder, and Bender said Keaton doesn't know the exact dates she last saw the kids.

Keaton pleads not guilty for murders
Heather Keaton has entered a not guilty plea on capital murder charges in the deaths of Natalie and Chase Deblase. Natalie's body was found in Citronelle, and Chase's body was found in Vancleave, Miss.
Prosecutors say the children were murdered by Keaton and their biological father, John Deblase.
Detective Angela Prine with Mobile police interviewed both Keaton and Deblase. She says both of them agree that five-year-old Natalie died March 4, 2010 and three-year-old Chase died on June 20, 2010. But the couple disagrees over how the children died.

Blind Stepmother Pleads Not Guilty To Capital Murder Charges
The woman accused of torturing Natalie and Chase DeBlase pleaded not guilty to capital murder charges Tuesday.
Heather Leavell-Keaton, 22, who was initially charged with child abuse and abuse of a corpse, appeared in court on the upgraded murder charges with two court appointed attorneys, Richard Horne and Jim Vollmer.
The prosecutor has declined to discuss what brought about the capital murder charges, but testimony during a preliminary hearing on related charges suggests the children died after being tortured by Keaton.
The children’s father, John DeBlase, who is also facing murder charges, told police he found Natalie dead at their apartment in West Mobile after Keaton duct taped her hands and feet, put a sock in her mouth and stuffed her in a suitcase for more than 9 hours. DeBlase admitted he knew Natalie was in the suitcase but went to school and told Keaton "she better be out when I get back."
DeBlase then told police his son, Chase, died after Keaton duct taped his hands to the side of his legs, strapped a broom handle to his back, shoved a sock in his mouth and forced him to stand in a corner all night while the adults slept.
... A preliminary hearing on Keaton's capital murder charges is scheduled for February 18.

Inmate: Keaton admitted to me she killed children
Prosecutors say Heather Keaton confessed to killing her stepchildren to a Mobile County Metro Jail inmate. That news information came out in court Monday, during Keaton's preliminary hearing.
Keaton is charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of her step children Natalie and Jonathan Chase Deblase. The capital murder charge came after her arrest in December on a lesser charge.
"There was a woman who was in the Mobile County Metro Jail on some very old, and fairly insignificant charges, a 2004 theft by deception case, who wanted absolutely nothing in return for the information that she gave. She was in the, what they call the wedge with Heather Keaton," Assistant District Attorney Jo Beth Murphee said.
Prosecutors said statements Keaton allegedly made to the fellow inmate resulted in the capital murder charges.
The inmate, Rosanna Russell, contacted Mobile Police after her release in mid-December.
Russell told investigators Keaton said she and John Deblase, the children's biological father, used anti-freeze to poison the children who were four and two-years-old.
According to the former inmate, the couple tested the anti-freeze first on the family dog to see how long it would take to kill a living thing.
Natalie died first. Her body was dumped in Citronelle.
The pair stopped poisoning Jonathan after the sister's death, but later considered him a liability because he continued to cry and ask for his "Sissy".

The grandfather of Chase and Natalie Deblase says he hasn't slept since learning how his grandchildren died. Prosecutors say four year old Natalie and three year old Chase were poisoned last year by their father, John Deblase, and stepmother, Heather Keaton, and their bodies found dumped in the woods.
Richard Delbase is trying to hold onto the good memories of when his grandchildren lived with him for two years, but he is now haunted by the details of what he heard in court monday. The children's stepmother, Heather Keaton was in court, for her preliminary hearing on capital murder charges. We learned the children were tortured and slowly poisoned with antifreeze. Couple charged with capital murder in kids' deaths
Authorities say a grand jury has indicted an Alabama couple on capital murder charges in the gruesome deaths of two young children last year.
The Mobile Press-Register reports (http://bit.ly/orPcGv) that Heather Leavell-Keaton and her common-law husband, John DeBlase, face two counts of capital murder in the deaths of his children, 3-year-old Chase DeBlase and 4-year-old Natalie DeBlase.
The indictment states that the defendants intentionally caused the children's deaths by "poisoning and/or asphyxiation and/or starvation and/or dehydration."
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich declined to discuss specifics about evidence in the case, but said it is the "most vile case I've ever been associated with."
DeBlase's attorney, James Sears, could not immediately be reached for comment. An attorney for Leavell-Keaton, James Vollmer, said he had been expecting the charges and was not surprised by them.
The two children were reported missing in November. Their bodies were found in Mississippi the following month.

John DeBlase was first charged with two counts of felony murder for the deaths of his young children, 4-year-old Natalie and 3-year-old Chase. Now he's charged with two counts of capital murder and could possibly get the death penalty if he's convicted.
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich said new evidence was presented to the grand jury in this case and it upgraded the charges.
Earlier this year, Heater Keaton, the children's stepmother, pleaded not guilty to capital murder.
Prosecutors said Roseanna Russell was assigned to spend an hour a day to help Keaton in Mobile Metro Jail. During that time, Keaton allegedly told Russell she and the children's father, John DeBlase, used antifreeze to poison the children.
The information investigators received from Russell led to the upgraded capital murder charges against Keaton.
District Attorney Ashley Rich would not discuss what new evidence was presented in this case.

DeBlase pleads not guilty to capital murder
Noticeably smaller after spending the last few months behind bars, John DeBlase pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder Wednesday.
DeBlase is charged with killing his young children, Natalie and Chase. Their bodies were found dumped in the woods.
Natalie was found in the Citronelle area. Her brother Chase was discovered in Mississippi.
DeBlase's attorney said he is not guilty by reason of insanity.
"He's very concerned and worried - heartbroken that his children are dead," said defense attorney Jim Sears.
DeBlase's common law wife, Heather Keaton, also charged with two counts of capital murder in this case, also entered an insanity plea.
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich doesn't buy the argument.
"We have no reason to believe that they were insane at the time they committed this offense - or now," said Rich.
Rich plans to seek the death penalty. DeBlase's father, Richard said his family has suffered three loses, losing Natalie, Chase, now his son John.
