Police: Boy and Dad's Bodies Found In Car Along I-17
Officials say the vehicle flew off the cliff, killing both people inside.

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A tragic ending this Mother's Day, after a 7-year-old autistic boy and his father were found dead in their vehicle Sunday night.

Police made the discovery after spending days searching for the pair.

Max Hernandez and his father, Conrad, disappeared Friday morning.

Max was autistic and according to his mother, the dad was suicidal.

No one had seen either of them since Friday.

That's when Max's mom said Hernandez was supposed to take him to school.

Missing Chandler dad, son found dead after apparent vehicle crash

A missing Chandler man and his 7-year-old son were found dead in an apparent vehicle crash Sunday afternoon, said Chandler police.

The bodies of Conrad Hernandez, 47, and his son, Max, 7, were found ejected from a vehicle one mile south of Sunset Point along Interstate 17.

A helicopter located Hernandez's 2009 Mazda Sedan about 5:30 p.m.

"The vehicle was off the road into a ravine," said Detective David Ramer, a spokesman for Chandler police.

Missing Chandler father, son called 911 after car crash‎

Hours before his wife would call police to report her husband and son missing, Chandler lawyer Conrad Hernandez told a Yavapai County dispatcher Friday he had run off Interstate 17 in the mountains north of Phoenix.

He said during the 911 call that he was severely injured, according to a Chandler police report. He told the dispatcher he couldn't move and was stranded with his 7-year-old son, Max, outside his wrecked Mazda 3, five miles south of the Sunset Point Rest Area.

But help did not come until Sunday afternoon.

Agencies re-trace steps of recovery effort‎

Law enforcement authorities explained Tuesday what happened from the time they received a 911 call from a man who said he and his son had been severely injured in a collision until they found the car and their bodies two days later.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at 12:36 p.m. Friday from Conrad Hernandez, 47, of Chandler, who said his car had been in a collision five miles south of the Sunset Point rest stop on I-17. The Arizona Department of Public Safety on Monday recovered the bodies of Hernandez, 47, and his son, Max, 7, who were ejected from their vehicle after it crashed Friday into a 200-foot ravine a mile south of Sunset Point on I-17.

"The call came in at approximately 12:36 p.m. Friday from the father," said Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. "Two deputies responded to the area to check after the call came in and DPS was notified as well."

One of the deputies searched the area described to YCSO dispatchers for an hour and 15 minutes, but found no evidence of a collision or Hernandez's car, D'Evelyn said.
