UK man in Toronto searching for missing daughter
A British father's two-year search for his young daughter has led him to Toronto, where authorities believe the girl may be living with her mother under an assumed name.
Henry Da Massa has quit his job and hired a private investigator to assist police in their search for his daughter. He has been in Toronto since March.
"It's devastating as a parent when your child is removed from you for any time, and after two years, it's a really difficult thing to deal with," he told CTV's Canada AM Monday.
Police allege 33-year-old Helen Gavaghan fled England in December of 2008 with her now six-year-old daughter, Pearl Rose Gavaghan Da Massa.
The pair are believed to have been living in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood from January 2009 to February 2010 under the assumed names of Dana Flaherty for Gavaghan and Belle Flaherty for her daughter.
Gavaghan was working in child-care and home-schooling groups.

Worldwide search for daughter allegedly taken by mom brings dad to Canada
While one local father is revelling in a reunion with his child two years after her mother took her to China, another dedicated dad has uprooted his life overseas, following leads to Canada in search of his.
Calgary-based Missing Children Society of Canada revealed this week the young girl taken to China was reunited with her father in Calgary.
Maria Sbert, a director of the Missing Children Society, says parental abductions are rare but hopes that case bolsters faith for other parents living similar nightmares.

When Henry da Massa’s daughter Pearl mentioned something about a passport he didn’t think much of it.
The four-year-old was, after all, always learning new words so it was hardly a surprise.
“She was expanding her vocabulary every day ... I didn’t pick up on it,” de Massa said.
Weeks later when Pearl (born Pearl Rose Gavaghan da Massa) and her mother Helen vanished, the innocuous comment became an overlooked nefarious foreshowing.
The 40-year-old father from Manchester, England last saw Pearl in December 2008, before she went to visit her mom, Helen, who had joint custody.
Shortly after, da Massa took an odd phone call from one of Helen’s friends saying the two went on a trip to India — without warning and just before Christmas.
“I simply wouldn’t have OK’d that type of holiday,” da Massa says now.
“But I didn’t think it was an abduction at first.”
The holidays came and went and the little girl still wasn’t back in England.
With no word from her mother, da Massa began to worry.

New concerns for missing child last spotted in Toronto
The father of a missing 6-year-old girl last seen in Toronto is asking the public for help after new concerns about the child’s safety were brought to police.
Police say a Toronto healthcare professional who treated Pearl Rose Gavaghan da Massa — known in Toronto as Belle Flaherty — said the child showed “signs of trauma, social isolation and continued upheaval.”
The news confirmed the desperate father’s fears about the wellbeing of his child, who he hasn’t seen in over two years.
An international arrest warrant remains in effect for Helen Gavaghan, the girl’s mother.
“I’m just gravely concerned for Pearl,” da Massa said Friday. “She is in jeopardy.”
“Now is the time for people who know anything about Helen and Pearl to share that information with the police, anonymously or otherwise.”
Da Massa quit his job and left behind his life in the U.K. to search for Pearl in Toronto. He was been living in a small basement apartment near the Danforth since February.

Police help dad go online to find daughter
Police are helping an Englishman search for his abducted daughter who may be in Toronto with a video appeal on Twitter.
Henry Da Massa, 40, was separated from his ex-girlfriend, Helen Gavaghan, but had joint custody of his daughter, Pearl, 6, who went missing in December 2008.
Pearl and her mother have been seen in the Parkdale area.
Toronto Police have put photos of Pearl online to help Da Massa find his daughter, Const. Wendy Drummond says.
Police helped Da Massa put together a Facebook page so he could “appeal to people to help him find his daughter,” Drummond says.
During the five-minute video Da Massa tells his story and asks the public for help, whether it be through Facebook, Child Find or
Crimestoppers.
“Helen and Pearl left England in December 2008 and arrived in Toronto shortly after and joined an alternative community where they lived under different names,” Da Massa says in the video.
Gavaghan went by the name Dana Flaherty and Pearl was known as Belle.

$10000 reward for information on missing girl
Henry Da Massa hoped he’d be celebrating his daughter’s seventh birthday with her on Wednesday, but the father was instead far from home, appealing for tips on his child’s whereabouts.
The Missing Children’s Society of Canada announced a $10,000 reward for information on the location of Pearl Gavaghan Da Massa, who was abducted from her U.K. home, allegedly by her mother, more than two years ago and brought to Toronto. Police say the pair remains on the run.
“Pearl’s fourth birthday was the last one we were together,” her father said.
“We’re all concerned that Pearl’s childhood is being wrestled from her that she’s not being allowed to build up trust with the world around her. She’s not experiencing what it’s like to go to school or to go to music lessons -- just to do normal things.”
“My concerns are that Pearl will be severely impacted by these events and she’ll be dealing with them for a long time to come.”
Toronto Police and England’s Greater Manchester Police allege Helen Gavaghan, 33, took her daughter Pearl from her home without consent. The mother shares custody with Da Massa.
A U.K. arrest and extradition warrant and an Interpol RED notice have been issued for the mother.

Henry Da Massa calls for information on Pearl's birthday
Yesterday (April 6th) was the seventh birthday of Pearl Gavaghan Da Massa, but her father Henry has not seen her for more than two years.
He had joint custody of his daughter when, on December 9th 2008, her mother Helen Gavaghan allegedly fled the country, abducting the child from her home in Manchester.
Last summer the pair were sighted in Toronto, leading to the belief that they may be travelling through Canada or into the US.
However, they could be using pseudonyms - Pearl may be known as Belle Flaherty, while Helen has been known to use Dana Flaherty and Meta International as alternative identities.

$10000 reward for girl on run with mom
Henry Da Massa wanted to be celebrating with his daughter on her seventh birthday Wednesday, but instead was pleading with people to help him find her.
The Missing Children Society of Canada announced a $10,000 reward for any information leading to Pearl Gavaghan Da Massa's whereabouts during a press conference at Toronto Police headquarters.
"We're asking Canadians to step up and provide information, to be aware, to look and help us search, and bring Pearl home," said Amanda Pick, director of the missing kids' society.
Pearl was allegedly abducted from her United Kingdom home by her mother, Helen Gavaghan, in December 2008.
Police believe Gavaghan travelled to Mexico and then Texas, before coming to Toronto just over two years ago.

Missing Children Society of Canada: New Details in Pearl Gavaghan Da Massa Case
$10,000 Reward for Information Still Available for Missing Child
Information received in the Pearl Gavaghan Da Massa case points to the possibility that the missing girl and her abductor may have travelled across Canada and are in hiding in British Columbia, possibly in the Vancouver area. The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) made the announcement today from its headquarters in Calgary, Alberta.
Today's release of information in the case follows MCSC's announcement at a press conference in Toronto earlier this month of a $10,000 reward for information leading to the missing girl's whereabouts. The reward offering is scheduled to expire next week on May 6th. While the organization has received several tips since the announcement, including new photos of the pair, the reward for information remains up for grabs.
"We're still looking for that key piece of information," said Ted Davis, MCSC investigator and former police detective. "The window is closing on this reward offer. If you have any information, now would be a good time to come forward."
The reward announcement was originally made on April 6th, which was Pearl's 7th birthday - a day that should be spent with family and friends - something that this little girl is being deprived of.
