The ex-lover of shamed mum Karen Matthews yesterday admitted viewing child porn - as he abandoned his appeal bid.

But Craig Meehan, 23, claimed he downloaded the 49 sick images in error as he hunted adult porn.

In September he got 20 weeks' jail for 11 kid porn charges but walked from court because of time he had spent on remand.

One charge was quashed by a Leeds judge yesterday.

Matthews and Michael Donovan face sentence this month for kidnapping her daughter Shannon, nine.

I am not a for life sentence always but 8 years is definitely not enough ! Her daughter was drugged over a long period & what we know after too ! Oh courts surely could do more????????

We're dealing with news of a similar but even worse case here in Ireland at the moment that has shocked the whole country to the core. There will be mayhem about it as 7 year sentence given, as accused is a woman & our laws couldn't give a higher sentence for a woman, dating back to 1908 !! I do know immediate change is needed as people are deeply hurt. I'll post it in news section.

Whilst news is scarce now, I imagine many of us think about Shannon & her siblings a lot. I hope they are very happy in their foster homes.

ITV1 to air crime doc on TV appeal phenomenon

ITV1 is to examine the phenomenon of people who make impassioned TV appeals about kidnaps and murderers – and then turn out to have committed the crime.

Mentorn Media's 60-minute Tears, Lies and Videotape will focus on the notorious case of Karen Matthews, who appealed to the public over the disappearance of her daughter Shannon but was later found to have been involved in organising her kidnapping.

It is also expected to examine Ian Huntley's plea to find the culprit of the Soham murders before he was found guilty.

The documentary will piece archive footage together with new interviews and will feature criminal psychologist professor David Canter examining how somehigh-profile examples have made the public more cynical of emotional appeals.

Outgoing ITV1 controller of current affairs Jeff Anderson ordered the doc and Nick London and Kaye Godleman are lined up as the producers.
