Girl reported missing in South Salt Lake

Her name is Serner Moo. She is 7 years old, Asian, 3 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 45 pounds. She has long black hair and is missing her two front teeth.

Really shocked about this. Didn't think it would end like this when I posted it. How come there are always creeps going about who can find children in vunerable positions. It never ceases to amaze and disgust me.

Thanks for the article Pam. I am getting so confused with this Amber Alert information.

Recently I read an article about the "mis-use of Amber Alert" - apparently it isn't appropriate in all cases. That was confirmed by Mark Williams-Thomas in a TV interview when Shannon Matthews was found. He suggested that it is only successful when a vehicle registration number (or part thereof) is known and can be circulated. Other than that, only local radio stations needs to be alerted to inform those in the LOCAL area where the child might be found. (But that's not a full Amber Alert)

That is interesting Merly. I expect a partial Amber Alert could have been useful here as neighbouring apartment. It is all so tragic. Poor family, she has 4 brothers and loving parents.

Absolutely tragic Pam. Every lost and missing child is a tragedy in my book.

I am trying to find the article again. It was something about "Amber Alert Overload". There were so many being issued inappropriately that the US public started to 'switch off'. That isn't meant as a criticism of the US folk - it was what the report concluded. They were getting information that they couldn't do anything with (description of a child in a totally different area) so when the ones they COULD help with came over the radio or on the motorway matrix signs, they were sort of immune.

wow Merly I must admit am surprised by this, as we even saw an Amber Alert while on a motorway in US and thought it was a great idea as people were able to read it quickly while driving.

Please, please don't think that I am against the Amber Alert system. I would like to see something coordinated across all European countries - but Amber Alerts must only be used when appropriate.

An Amber Alert will not necessarily bring back a missing child more quickly - or at all. There are some missing children cases where an Amber Alert is not appropriate and just cannot help. Shannon Matthews kidnapping is a case in point. If there had been an Amber Alert posted on the Motorway Matrix screens (on the M62 and M1) she would not have been found any quicker as a result of those. A vehicle had not been noticed or connected with her, and she was a mile away from her home.

Look at how quickly the Yorkshire Police got the information nation-wide via radio, TV and press. When I took the dog over for 2 days of volunteer searching on Dewsbury Moors, I was amazed at the distance that some people had travelled to join in and assist. I was close enough (90 minutes) to drive there, search and drive back each day.

So back to Serner Moo - it is absolutely appropriate that they question whether an Amber Alert COULD HAVE achieved a positive outcome. As she was murdered in her own apartment block, I doubt it. But that is just my opinion Pam.

Thing is IMO Amber Alerts are given out in so many different ways, on radio ads, tv, on missing websites, most wanted type website,papers etc. It is hard to know,maybe our US members would have a better idea as so used to it as this stage.I still think it is unusual for such a young child not to get an Amber Alert issued.

This is perhaps easy to say with hindsight but there could possibly have been a different outcome. How can you tell beforehand?

EWE2, West Yorkshire Police are saying that Amber Alert would not have enhanced their investigation as they did not have any details of a vehicle. They believed she was still in the locality.

They used a system called Child Rescue Alert (I think that is what it is called).

Murder Charge for Missing Girl's Neighbor

21-Year-old Tells Cops the Girl Died After He Forcibly Kept Her in His Apartment

"It [the killing] occurred within the hour, within an hour of her leaving her house," South Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Snyder said at a news conference today. He said the girl died "fairly quickly, probably before the family even knew she was missing."

Hser Nay Moo was found dead Tuesday night in a bathtub inside the neighbor's apartment, police said.

The man, Esar Met, 21, admitted to authorities that he killed her before trying to hide her body, according to Utah police.

Met, who lived in a row-house style unit at the same complex from which Moo disappeared Monday afternoon, was arrested this morning after he admitted to attempting to hold the child "by force" and she died, according to a Salt Lake County statement.

Around 2:00 in the afternoon, she left her parents apartment at South Parc and went straight to apartment #472. She’d been there before. Five single men live there and at least 4 of them were family friends. But on Monday, only one was at home: 21-year old Esar Met. Esar Met had arrived in Utah just last month from a Burmese refugee camp in Thailand.

If she knew him, she did no know him well. Still, she stayed at the apartment for about an hour. But when she tried to leave, South Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Snyder said he would not let her. “Something happened while they were in the apartment. A physical altercation did occur. It was apparent there was inflicted trauma on her body.” Chief Snyder would not say how Hser Nay Moo was killed. An autopsy was conducted Wednesday morning. The results will be back in 6 to 8 weeks.
