Not Guilty Plea for Man Accused in Indiana Girl's Death
An Indiana magistrate entered a not guilty plea Wednesday for a man accused of bludgeoning and dismembering a 9-year-old girl whose sick mother had entrusted her to his care.
A disheveled Michael Plumadore, 39, was led into the Allen County courtroom in shackles and an orange- and tan- striped jumpsuit for his initial hearing in the Dec. 22 killing of Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Plumadore told police that he repeatedly hit Aliahna in the head with a brick, chopped up her body with a hack saw, stashed her head, hands and feet in the trailer where he lived and dumped her other remains nearby.
He was charged Friday with murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene.
Allen Superior Court Magistrate Samuel Keirns asked Plumadore whether he understood the charges and proceedings. Plumadore answered each question with "yes, sir."
It's standard in Indiana for magistrate's to enter pleas for defendants without attorneys. Keirns said he would assign a public defender for Plumadore and scheduled his next court hearing for Jan. 18.
The standard prison sentence for a murder conviction in Indiana is 45 years to 65 years. The other charges each carry maximum sentences of three years in prison.
About 60 people, including journalists and other defendants awaiting court hearings, were in the court room for the brief hearing in Fort Wayne. Afterward, deputies blocked the sidewalk outside the courthouse as Plumadore was led into a police van to return him to the county jail.
Relatives say they had considered Plumadore a trusted family friend. He had been caring for Aliahna and her 6-year-old sisters because their mother had the flu and Aliahna's stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day.
The girl had been dead for more than 24 hours before she was reported missing two days before Christmas.
Authorities have said they are continuing to investigate the murder and awaiting autopsy results. Allen County Prosecutor Robyn Niedzwiecki declined to comment on the status of the investigation, a possible motive or when a decision will be made on whether to seek the death penalty.

Plumadore pleads guilty to Aliahna murder
To spend life in prison without parole
Michael Plumadore admitted Friday to killing 9-year-old Aliahna Lemmon – pleading guilty to murder with the sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
His guilty plea in Allen Superior Court takes the possibility of the death penalty off the table, and spares the community the financial expense and emotional cost of a trial, scheduled for next month.
In addition to murder, Plumadore pleaded guilty to removing a body from the scene of a violent or suspicious death and abuse of a corpse. He also admitted to being a habitual offender.
Plumadore, 39, was arrested Dec. 26 after he confessed to police that he killed Aliahna and told them where to find her dismembered body.
Aliahna was reported missing days before Christmas. Her mother told police she last saw her daughter Dec. 20. Her mother left the girl and her two sisters in the care of Plumadore, who lived in a nearby mobile home, while she recovered from an illness.
Plumadore said he last saw Aliahna the morning of Dec. 23.
But after days of fruitless searching by police, firefighters and others, investigators interviewed Plumadore again on Dec. 26 and he confessed.
He admitted to killing her Dec. 22, bashing her repeatedly in the head with a brick while she stood outside his mobile home on the stoop, according to court records.
Police found the girl's dismembered body in trash bags, discarded in a trash bin at a nearby business, while her head, hands and feet were found in the freezer inside Plumadore's mobile home.

Michael Plumadore, Ind. man, gets life sentence for dismembering 9-year-old girl
A judge sentenced 39-year-old Michael Plumadore to life in prison on Monday for bludgeoning to death and dismembering a 9-year-old girl he was babysitting at a Fort Wayne trailer park days before Christmas.
Plumadore pleaded guilty last month to murder, abuse of a corpse and removing a dead body from the scene in Aliahna Maroney-Lemmon's death. Prosecutors initially called for the death penalty, but agreed to the life sentence without possibility of parole in exchange for the guilty plea.
Plumadore was allegedly looking after Aliahna and her 6-year-old sisters on Dec. 22 at his mobile home while their mother was sick. Plumadore and Aliahna's family lived in the same trailer park in Fort Wayne, and Aliahna's relatives described him as a trusted family friend who helped care for the girl's dying grandfather.
Police said they found the girl's head, hands and feet in the freezer at the mobile home where Plumadore lived with Aliahna's grandfather, who died about three weeks earlier. The other remains were thrown into trash bags and discarded at a gas station.
The other girls weren't harmed.
During last month's hearing, Plumadore told the judge he killed Aliahna by repeatedly striking her in the head with a brick. He then cut her up with a hacksaw.
"I put parts in my freezer and took the rest down to the Marathon station and put them in a dumpster," he said.
Plumadore is a habitual offender and has criminal records in Florida and North Carolina including convictions for trespassing, assault and an Indiana conviction for forgery.

R.I.P. Aliahna
WHEN GOD CALLS LITTLE CHILDREN
When God calls little children
to dwell with him above,
We mortals sometime question
the wisdom of his love
For no heartache compares with
the death of one small child
Who does so much to make our world,
seem wonderful and mild
Perhaps God tires of calling
the aged to his fold,
So He picks a rosebud,
before he can grow old.
God knows how much we need them,
and so he takes but a few
To make the land of Heaven
more beautiful to view.
Believing this is difficult still
somehow we must try,
The saddest word mankind knows will always be "Goodbye."
So when a little child departs
we who are left behind
Must realize God loves children,
Angels are hard to find.
