Police in Hornell looking for missing family
On July 21st, Alicia Appleton, 27, and her two children, Alexis Slayton, 8, and David Slayton, 6, were reported missing by Appleton's mother. Now Hornell Police and New York State Police are trying to figure out where they went.
"She has apparently left the area, the Hornell area, under her own volition with her children and we are just interested in knowing that the children are ok and that she is ok," said Hornell Police Chief Theodore Murray.
Police have gotten reports that the children were seen recently in Arkport walking along the railroad tracks and the family was also spotted in Wellsville at the Food Mart.
"We are running down leads for the last people that have seen them. We are running down leads in this area and also down in the Wellsville area and possibly in the Bradford, Pennsylvania area. Which is a possible location where they may have been going to," said Captain Rick Allen of the New York State Police.
Police also think the family may be traveling with a man named Eric Trumbull, so they are on the lookout for him as well. But there is no suspicion of kidnapping and police do not consider this to be a criminal investigation. Police just want to hear from Appleton so they know that she and her kids are safe.
"If she would call us and say, hey look, I'm at this location, we could send someone over to talk to her, see the kids are fine, she's fine and we close this investigation. But until we can make contact with them and physically see these children and her and make sure everyone is safe and their welfare is secure, we'll continue the investigation," Allen said.
If you have any information that could help in the investigation or lead to this family's location, you're asked to call the Hornell Police Department at (607) 324-2860 .

Hornell Evening Tribune

Missing Hornell woman, children found uninjured in Scranton, Pa.
A missing Maple City woman, her boyfriend, and her two children were found unharmed Tuesday evening in a Pennsylvania motel room.
Hornell police Inv. Tom Aini said Pennsylvania State Police and the Archibald borough police found Alicia Appleton, 27, Eric Trumbull, 26, and Alexis and David Slayton, ages 8 and 6, respectively, at approximately 6:15 p.m. in a Scranton, Pa. motel room.
Everyone in the group was uninjured and in good health, according to a release from the Hornell police department. Aini added that the group was obeying the law and “were just minding their own business.”
The group was last seen at the Wellsville Food Mart at approximately 4:30 p.m. on July 21. They were reported missing by Appleton’s mother, Beth Smith.
A woman driving a car picked the four up on Kenyon Road in Almond on July 21 and drove the group to the Food Mart. The woman told police that Appleton said the group was heading toward Bradford, Pa., where Trumbull has family.
The subsequent search for the group wasn’t an Amber Alert situation because Appleton has custody of the two children. Hornell police said previously that Appleton has had mental health issues in the past.
Tracing cell phone records, police were able to find a cab driver in Scranton who provided authorities with information as to where he dropped the group off. Based on this information, police were able to track the group to the motel, said Aini.
The four were aware of the search, but didn’t want people to know where they were, he added. They remained in Scranton after being discovered in the motel.
