Nude mom found walking arrested; no memory of missing 2-yr-old daughter
Search and rescue crews and deputies continued searching for a missing two-year-old Humboldt County girl whose mother was found naked Friday morning walking on the side of a Trinity County highway, and who said she couldn’t remember her daughter.

Father urges compassion as wife makes court appearance in toddler's death
The father of a drowned McKinleyville toddler wept uncontrollably as he tried to read a statement to reporters Tuesday outside a Trinity County courtroom where his wife had appeared just minutes before, charged with the girl's murder.
Claudia Pedreros, 30, is accused of drowning her and Robert Parker's 2˝-year-old daughter, Sophia, in the Trinity River on Friday morning. She made her first court appearance in shackles and an orange jail jumpsuit.
"I miss her terribly and the emptiness she leaves behind serves to remind me how precious and fragile life actually is," Parker said about his daughter. With each word, he visibly struggled to keep from succumbing to body-shaking sobs.
At the request of her attorney, the arraignment for Pedreros was continued to June 1.

Father of drowned toddler thanks law enforcement, requests privacy: Pedreros to receive mental health evaluation before arraignment
The husband of a McKinleyville woman who confessed to drowning her 2-year-old daughter in the Trinity River thanked the agencies that searched for the toddler and requested privacy for his family, according to a statement Tuesday.
”It is impossible to express in words the loss we feel right now,” said Robert Parker, Claudia Pedreros' husband and father of Sophia Pedreros Parker. “Sophia was in life, and will always be in our hearts, a remarkably beautiful and brave little girl. She brought such light into this world, and I feel truly blessed that I had the opportunity to spend even such a brief time with her.”
Parker also stated that this is a difficult time for his wife.
”(She) has not only lost her child, but is now in custody,” he said. “We ask and greatly appreciate your understanding that we need our privacy to grieve and work through this time.”

Judge questions Claudia Pedreros' ability to stand trial; McKinleyville woman's competency hearing scheduled for July 6
A Trinity County Superior Court judge on Wednesday questioned Claudia Pedreros' ability to stand trial for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter and set a July 6 competency hearing for the McKinleyville woman.
Pedreros, 30, is accused of drowning Sophia Parker Pedreros in the Trinity River on May 20. She will be evaluated by two court-appointed psychologists before court proceedings continue. According to Judge James Woodward, if Pedreros is found mentally incompetent, she will be placed in a state hospital until it is determined she is able to stand trial.
Pedreros, who is charged with one count of murder and one count of child endangerment, smiled and laughed with her court-appointed interpreter before the arraignment, but listened attentively when her attorney Russell Clanton began speaking. Pedreros' husband, Robert Paul Parker, and his father were in the courtroom.
Clanton requested Marin psychologist Otto Vanoni evaluate Pedreros' mental capability. Trinity County District Attorney Michael Harper requested that Redding psychologist Ray Carlson also evaluate Pedreros. A report will be submitted to the judge prior to the mental competency hearing.
A psychologist evaluated Pedreros before Wednesday's arraignment, Clanton said, but he declined to comment on the results.
Outside the courtroom, Pedreros' husband stated that after much soul searching he stands behind his wife 100 percent.
”I feel nothing but a very deep love and compassion for my wife Claudia,” Parker said. “In my heart, I know Claudia would not have been capable in any way of consciously hurting our daughter.”
Parker and Pedreros have been together for 11 years and married in 2004 in Chile, he said. Pedreros and Parker moved to Humboldt County so Parker could study fisheries biology at Humboldt State University. He graduated May 14. When Pedreros and their daughter went missing May 20, Parker was pursuing his master's degree in environmental science at the University of Nevada, Reno. That has been put on hold, he said.
”The main thing is to make it through the time of mourning and loss of my daughter,” Parker said, adding that the community has shown his family tremendous support.
Following Parker's statement, Clanton added that residents should keep in mind that Pedreros is innocent until proven guilty.
”I'm aware of the innuendo circulating in the blogosphere,” he said. “I'd like people to harken back to the presumption of innocence.”
Pedreros' father-in-law reported her and Sophia missing at about 8:25 a.m. May 20. Roughly 30 minutes later, Trinity County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a naked woman walking along Highway 3 and took Pedreros into custody. Before the toddler's body was found, the Trinity County District Attorney's Office charged Pedreros with felony child endangerment.
Trinity County Sheriff's deputies found Sophia's body in the Trinity River, one-half mile from the Trinity River Campground, on May 21 after a massive search effort that spanned two counties. Pedreros, who had initially stated she didn't remember having a daughter, allegedly confessed to drowning the toddler shortly after Sophia's body was found.
Remembering Sophia
A public memorial for Sophia will be held at 6 p.m. today on Humboldt State University's campus events field, across from the Forestry Building on 17th Street. Residents are welcome to bring flowers, candles and cards for Sophia. A memorial fund has also been established in Sophia's name at Coast Central Credit Union. For more information, call 496-4094.

Family, friends celebrate the life of Sophia Parker Pedreros
Robert Paul Parker gazed at pictures of his daughter smiling, of her hugging a friend and playing at preschool, and sent her a message -- and a vow.
”Sophia, Mommy and Daddy both love you so much,” he said. “I want to thank you for being a part of my life for a short time physically and forever. And Daddy will help Mommy out in any way that he possibly can.”
Surrounded by family, friends who knew Sophia Parker Pedreros from infancy and those who had never met her, Parker remembered a little girl whose favorite color was pink. He and the more than 60 others who attended the memorial at Humboldt State University on Thursday celebrated the life of a little girl whose sense of wonder was as limitless as the stars, her father said, but not above marveling at the music of frogs in the neighborhood pond.
Sophia was 2 years old when she died -- drowned in the Trinity River on May 20, allegedly at the hands of her mother, Claudia Pedreros, 30, of McKinleyville. Pedreros is scheduled to be evaluated by two court-appointed psychologists and will attend a mental competency hearing in July to determine if she is mentally capable of standing trial. She is charged with one count of murder and one count of child endangerment.
Parker, who said Pedreros is the person he “wants to help no matter what,” encouraged those who attended his daughter's memorial to promise to find out everything they can about postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. He also asked those who attended to promise to reach out to new mothers, even those they may not know.
”If you know a new mother, bring a basket of cookies and flowers and get to know them,” he said. “Be ready to help women that are in need in times of crisis. And help them to find the assistance that they need. Be as persistent and as demanding as it takes. Make this promise for Sophia.”
Sophia's memorial opened with rabbi Naomi Steinberg of Temple Beth El in Eureka turning to the north, east, west and south with prayers for the little girl. She asked Sophia's friends and family to share their favorite memories and snippets of wisdom they gained from knowing the toddler.
Tryphena Lewis, a family friend, said she visited the family shortly after Sophia was born. She was also able to meet Pedreros and her family.
”They were and are a beautiful family,” she said. “I see Sophia in Robert and in Bob (Parker's father), and in their love for her. She was a beautiful little girl.”
Julia Dorso, who just graduated from Humboldt State, said she worked at the college's Children's Center when Sophia attended. One of her favorite activities, Dorso said, was playing dress-up.
”She loved her clothes,” Dorso said. “She's loved dress-up ever since she was a little baby.”
As the sun set, Sophia's friends and family linked arms and held hands, singing her favorite song -- one she would sing with her mother and father on car trips.
”The more we get together, the happier we'll be.”

Judge Finds Mother Accused Of Drowning Daughter Competent To Stand Trial
A Trinity County Judge ruled Wednesday morning that 30 year-old Claudia Pedreros of McKinleyville is competent to stand trial for the murder of her 2 year old daughter, Sophia Parker Pedreros.
Claudia Pedreros' defense attorney, Russ Clanton, entered a dual plea for his client of not guilty to the crime committed and not guilty by reason of insanity. Pedreros has been charged with the murder of her child on two counts, premeditated murder and inflicting harm to a child. Pedreros' daughter was found dead in the Trinity River above Coffee Creek on May 21st, and detectives say Pedreros confessed to drowning her daughter.
In June, Trinity County Superior Court Judge James Woodward ordered two court appointed psychologists to give Pedreros a mental evaluation. Judge Woodward found that Pedreros is competent to stand trial and understands the charges she is facing. Her preliminary hearing is set for late August.
Pedreros is being held in the Trinity County Jail with no bail.
