Father of 'Wylie's Angel' says he's devastated

WYLIE — The father of "Wylie's Angel," the little boy who was found dead near Lake Lavon on April 15, is making plans to come to North Texas.

In a telephone interview with News 8, U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jerry Isgrigg said he was devastated when he learned about what happened to his six-year-old son, Gerren Joseph Isgrigg.

Gerren's grandmother, 63-year-old Darlene Phillips, has been jailed and charged with his murder.

Isgrigg, who is stationed in California, said he learned about the fate of his son from detectives who questioned him and then requested a DNA sample from him.

Father of Wylie's Angel Speaks Out
Gerren Isgrigg's Father says he's "numb"

COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS - The biological parents of the little boy known as Wylie's Angel are both now in the Dallas area. They're working to finalize funeral arrangements for the boy. Many people have lots of questions for the both of them.

The man who fathered, Gerren Joseph Isgrigg, is Staff Sergeant Jerry Isgrigg; a Marine who says he's heartbroken.

" I'm just completely numb. Not knowing what to feel about the events that have taken place," said Jerry Isgrigg.

Isgrigg still can't believe Gerren died near East Fork Park in Wylie. A place where he was left by his maternal grandmother, Darlene Phillips, who's been charged with murder.

Gerren's mother, Nyki Phillips, had left her son with her parents and did not see him regularly.

" I don't know the frame of mind of my ex-wife, obviously, I know she's grieving as well," said Isgrigg.

Isgrigg was also estranged from his son. A child he says had a rare epileptic disorder. We asked him why he hadn't seen his son in three years.

" Answering a question like that, everyone's going to have their own opinion. Me being in the military, being deployed, constantly being in the field, at times lack of money to get out there," he said.

Isgrigg and his ex-wife are now finalizing funeral arrangements.He says he intends to bury Gerren in Arizona where his family lives.

He also says he's in awe when he thinks about everything the community has done. He wants to organize a public memorial to include the people of Wylie.

Several hundred people filled First Baptist Church in Wylie for a public memorial for 6-year-old Gerren Isgrigg.

In full military dress, his grieving father, Jerry Isgrigg, struggled to find the words to thank the people of Wylie.

“This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do,” Isgrigg said. “You put so much of your hearts and souls into Gerren.”

Legal battle over remains of 'Wylie's Angel''‎

WYLIE — It's been nearly one month since the body of little Gerren Isgrigg was found in a Wylie park. And now, the body of the six-year-old is lying in wait as his parents battle over who gets his body.

Gerren's father, Jerry Isgrigg, asked a Collin County judge to prevent the boy's mother from taking the child's body out of state. But so far, authorities have not been able to find her to serve the papers.

Gerren’s body is at the North Dallas Funeral Home in Farmers Branch. A Collin County probate judge issued a temporary restraining order that will keep the child's body at the funeral home until the court can determine which parent has the right to decide what will happen with Gerren's remains.

Father obtains court order over burial of son, Gerren Isgrigg‎

The father of the 6-year-old boy who was found dead last month in Wylie has obtained a temporary restraining order over burial arrangements.

Jerry Isgrigg said Tuesday that his ex-wife, who got sole custody of their son after the couple's 2006 divorce, stopped all communication with him a week ago. The two have not talked since April 23. That's the day investigators identified the body of Gerren Isgrigg, who was found more than a week earlier near a Collin County pond.

Gerren's maternal grandmother, Darlene Phillips, faces a murder charge in connection with his death. Phillips, 63, was the primary caretaker of Gerren, who was blind, deaf and unable to move because of a seizure disorder.

Isgrigg said he filed the request in Collin County probate court last week to ensure that Gerren's mother, Nyki Phillips, doesn't act on her own.

This case is "so she just can't come in and take him and then disappear," Isgrigg said.

Isgrigg wants his son to have a Christian funeral and burial in Arizona. According to his request, Phillips has indicated that she wants her son cremated or buried in Arkansas, Oklahoma or Missouri.

"I'm trying to work it out, but she just doesn't want to play," Isgrigg said of the arrangements.
