Moncayo’s college tuition and therapy costs will be requested as part of the restitution sought at the time of Gardner’s sentencing. The probation officer’s report recommends Gardner pay Moncayo $2,421 while also paying Carrie McGonigle, Amber Dubois’ mother, $19, 479.38 for burial expenses not reimbursed by the Victims Compensation Board.

The King family and Amber Dubois’ father, Moe Dubois, have not submitted requests for restitution from Gardner in advance of the sentencing Friday.

Lake Elsinore sex offender expected to be sentenced Friday for two murders
John Albert Gardner III, 31, is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in San Diego County Superior Court.

A Lake Elsinore man who raped and murdered two San Diego County teens is scheduled to be sentenced Friday, closing out a case that has ganered national attention and focused attention on the judicial system and how it handles registered sex offenders.

John Albert Gardner III, 31, is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in San Diego County Superior Court. There is expected to be a full courtroom during the afternoon hearing, with a small army of media representatives, relatives, police and community members.

Gardner's guilty plea last month to killing 14-year-old Amber Dubois and 17-year-old Chelsea King has sparked a far-reaching review of how California deals with sex predators, a campaign that advocates hope to take to Washington and other state capitols.

Calls to stiffen penalties for child sex offenders began almost the moment Gardner was arrested Feb. 28, three days after he attacked Chelsea on an afternoon run in San Diego, strangled her, and buried her in a shallow, lakeside grave.

Their words will be sad, angry, vengeful.

And they will give their subject, confessed killer John Albert Gardner III, something to dwell on as he spends the rest of his life in prison.

At 1:30 p.m. today, Gardner, 31, will be led in shackles into a crowded courtroom for sentencing. He’s already made a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty and won’t be eligible for parole.

The day’s drama won’t involve his sentence; it will come from what his victims say.

Gardner may not speak himself, but he must listen as the families of two teenage girls he killed and a third victim he assaulted stand before him to share their pain and agony.
