Complaint filed vs. woman in case of missing baby

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office
filed a criminal complaint Wednesday against a Scottsdale woman in the case of missing baby Gabriel Johnson, officials said.

Tammi Smith, 37, was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with conspiracy to commit custodial interference and forgery, County Attorney Andrew Thomas
said at a news conference Thursday. Both charges are Class 4 felonies. The criminal complaint essentially is the step between an arrest and a preliminary hearing or indictment.

(CNN) -- Investigators searching for a missing 8-month-old boy began an intensive excavation and search effort Tuesday at a Texas landfill.

"Let me say this, that we do remain hopeful that baby Gabriel is alive," William McManus, chief of the San Antonio Police Department, said at a news conference at the landfill.

"We are, however, conducting both a missing persons investigation as well as a homicide investigation," he said, adding that aspects surrounding Gabriel Johnson's disappearance involve elements of a possible homicide.

The San Antonio landfill search for missing baby Gabriel Johnson was temporarily halted Tuesday after snow started falling.

On Thursday, the search entered Phase No. 2, and authorities brought in cadaver dogs from across Texas to search for the baby, who was last seen with his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, the day after Christmas.
