AMBER ALERT HELLAS

This year May 25th was even more significant for finding missing children. The date was used not only to commemorate our commitment to finding our children, but was also used to launch the AMBER alert program in Greece. As many know, the AMBER alert program is an emergency broadcasting system used when a child is missing and considered to be in danger. The system enables the public to assist law enforcement in finding a child.

The top story of little Giorgos which blotted Greece

The story of Giorgos Paraskevopoulos cannot be forgotten no matter how many years have passed. He was only 10 years old when he went missing at the mountain of Dimitra village, Gortinia on 24th of June 1992. His parents, who live in Crete, sent him for vacation to his grandparents. His father's sister picked him up and took care of him along with her children. During the morning of that day, his grandfather was ill and his aunt decided to give Giorgos the medicines so that he can go to the mountain and give them to him. His grandfather was a sheppard and he always went there for his sheep. Then, his grandfather left Giorgos to a fountain - head so that he fills his two flasks with water and returned to the sheep. When he came back, he didn't find Giorgos and assumed that the kid went back to the village. He didn't tell anything even to his brother who visited him that day. The disappearance was noticed the next evening when the grandfather returned to his home. Despite the research of army, special research teams from Switzerland, villagers and relatives, the kid was never found. Few days later, the flasks were found at an inaccessible area of the mountain. Moreover, a villager claimed that he saw a little boy going down from the mountain to the main road but he didn't pay any attention so he didn't tell anything during the first time of the research. He revealed it when the area's Metropolite threatened with aphorism those who know but wouldn't talk. Many years later, a sheppard found to an inaccessible area a little sports shoe which may belong to missing Giorgos.
