Police check 'mystery woman' in missing twins hunt
French police were checking Saturday a report of a mystery woman who was seen with missing Swiss six-year-old twins and their father in Corsica before he committed suicide, as the girls mother said she had still not "lost hope."
An investigator said they were "taking seriously" the account of Olga Orneck, a resident of the small ferry port of Propriano, who described to AFP how the four had attracted her attention on the morning of February 1 as she went to buy her newspaper.
"I noticed them because Propriano is a small village where strangers are spotted immediately, especially at this time of year," she said in a telephone interview.
Orneck said the girls wore pink track-suits and parkas and were eating croissants or chocolate pastries. One had spectacles and a pink and white hat.
"The woman was aged 45-50 with brown hair and was wearing a black three-quarter-length coat and white trousers," she said. "She wasn't from Propriano or I'd have recognised her."
Orneck said both the woman and the man, whom she identified as Matthias Schepp immediately from a photograph afterwards, were eating croissants and chatting as if they knew each other well.
Orneck contacted the police in response to an appeal for witnesses after Schepp threw himself under a train in southern Italy two days later, having written to his estranged wife saying he had also killed the girls.
She was "100 percent certain" it was Schepp she had seen and "95 percent certain" the girls were his daughters Alissia and Livia, she said.

Missing twins' mother joins hunt
The mother of missing Swiss twins - whose father confessed to killing them before committing suicide - has joined a police search for her daughters.
Irina Lucidi boarded a French police helicopter to search for the six-year-old girls on the island of Corsica.
The father, Matthias Schepp, and the twins were last seen on a ferry from mainland France to Corsica on 31 January.
On 3 February, Mr Schepp threw himself under a train in Italy.
Irina Lucidi - and her brother - arrived on Corsica on Sunday and immediately joined the search with French and Swiss officers.
The police are focusing on the area between Propriano, south-west, and Bastia, north-east, from where Mr Schepp left Corsica - apparently alone - before committing suicide.
Mrs Lucidi said she had "not lost hope" of finding her children.

Swiss, Italian, French officials to meet on missing twins
Swiss, Italian and French investigators will meet Wednesday to discuss developments in their search for a pair of missing Swiss twins, police told AFP Monday.
The meeting, aimed at coordinating the three-country search for the 6-year-old girls who have been missing since their father Matthias Schepp failed to return to their mother on January 30, was initially to have been held on Tuesday.
It has been "moved to Wednesday due to logistic reasons," said Swiss police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel, without giving details on the location of the planned meeting.
According to sources close to the investigation, prosecutors from the three countries in charge of the probe are to meet in Marseille.

Police find GPS belonging to father of missing twins
Police said Monday they have discovered the remains of a badly damaged satellite navigator used by the father of missing Swiss twins, but that are unlikely to advance their search for the girls.
Police found crushed pieces of a global positioning system (GPS) used by Matthias Schepp and car keys in bushes near the train tracks of Cerignola station in southern Italy where he had thrown himself under a fast train.
"It will be difficult to retrieve data" due to the poor conditions the object was found in, said Alfredo Fabbrocini, a local police official in charge of the Cerignola part of the inquiry.
Investigators say Schepp, who had carefully parked and locked his car, may have taken the GPS with him so that the information it carried would be destroyed as he threw himself under the train.
Italian police on Saturday said that they were looking for the device in the hope that it could retrace his steps since his January 28 departure from Switzerland and lead to six-year-old twins Livia and Alessia.

Mother of missing Swiss girls raise question of accomplice
The mother of missing Swiss twins on Tuesday raised the possibility that the father of the girls had picked up an accomplice on his journey through France.
"We are asking ourselves if Matthias Schepp had picked up an accomplice at the airport in Lyon," Irina Lucidi told Swiss online newspaper 20 minuten.
Swiss police confirmed that Schepp was in the region of Lyon on the evening of January 30 as his mobile phone signal was picked up then.
Police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel would not confirm that Schepp travelled to the airport, but noted that the mobile "relay antenna is in the region of Lyon and covers the sector in the direction of the airport."
French police were checking on Saturday a report of a mystery woman who was seen with Schepp and the six-year-old twins in the French island of Corsica.

Investigators: Witness sightings of Swiss twins in France not confirmed
Investigators probing the disappearance of 6-year-old Swiss twins said Wednesday they have been unable to confirm witness sightings of the girls — leaving them as uncertain as ever about their fate.
Swiss police later said Alessia and Livia Schepp may never even have left Switzerland, even though the search has been focussed on the French island of Corsica.
Hope of finding the twins alive has faded since last week, when a letter from their father surfaced, saying he had killed them but leaving no other clues. Matthias Kaspar Schepp committed suicide in Italy after sending the grim letter, which said the girls were "resting in peace."
Investigators in France, Italy and Switzerland have been trying to trace their father's path in the days after he left his home near Lake Geneva with the girls on Jan. 30. He then travelled to southern France, Corsica and Italy — either with or without his daughters.
On Wednesday, investigators from the three countries huddled in the southern French city of Marseille to co-ordinate their efforts.
Officials said no possibilities had been ruled out, including that the girls are still alive.
"The inquiry is still very active," Marseille Prosecutor Jacques Dallest told reporters.

The last, tragic journey of Matthias Schepp
Police cannot say whether two twin girls, whose father committed suicide, are still alive
Police officials from Switzerland, France and Italy meeting in Marseille today to pool leads about the possible whereabouts of the missing six-year-old twins, Alessia and Livia Schepp, have been unable to offer their distraught mother any hope that they might still be alive.
The investigation remains active, but no recent witness sightings could be confirmed.
All this week, the girls' Italian mother, Irina Lucidi, has been on the island of Corsica, led there by a supposed sighting of the girls on a ferry from France.
Lucidi has been pleading with locals to come forward with any clues they might have as to the twins' whereabouts. She has also been flying with police investigators over the island by helicopter, pointing out the seaside locations where the family once spent their holidays in happier times.

Tourist vehicle may be clouding twins probe: Swiss police
Swiss police on Wednesday urged citizens who may have travelled to Corsica with a vehicle resembling that of the father of missing Swiss twins to come forward as this vehicle may be hampering their probe.
"People who were in Corsica during this period in question and whose vehicle resembles that of the father of the twins are requested to contact Vaud police or French police," a police statement said.
"The presence of the second vehicle is possible and is polluting the collection of witness accounts and information on the presence of the vehicle of the twins' father's car," police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel said.
Police have therefore called for witnesses to try to identify this second vehicle.
Police in Italy, France and Switzerland have been hunting for the two girls after Schepp failed to return them to their mother on January 30.

Investigation of missing Swiss twins upended
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Swiss police now say the missing 6-year-old twins might never have left Switzerland at all — throwing the entire investigation into doubt — and French investigators say they could even be alive.
After spending weeks searching for the girls, Swiss police and the public prosecutor's office for the canton (state) of Vaud said Wednesday there is no way of telling whether any witnesses actually saw Matthias Kaspar Schepp whisk away his daughters from Lausanne to Marseille, France, and then to the French island of Corsica and possibly to Italy.
"Anything is possible now," Vaud police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel told The Associated Press on Wednesday night. "We can't rule anything out."
The surprise turn of events came as authorities held news conferences in Marseille and later in Lausanne. Investigators say they have been unable to confirm any of the alleged witness sightings of the girls since they were seen playing at 1 p.m. Jan. 30 with a neighbor's child in their hometown of Saint-Sulpice, part of Lausanne, along Lake Geneva.

What a huge investigation this is. I know of people who find Lausanne quite an idyllic place. Hope news soon. It's heartbreaking.

200 supporters march to keep search going for missing Swiss twins
The mother of the missing Swiss twins and dozens of her supporters sought to encourage authorities on Wednesday to keep up their search in the hopes that the 6-year-old girls remain alive.
With hopes of finding the girls dimming since they disappeared Jan. 30 from this wealthy lakefront community, about 200 friends and neighbours including some of the girls' classmates took to the streets in a last-minute march organized through a popular Facebook page set up to assist in the search.

Swiss police say Corsica back in their sights as focus of search for missing twin girls
The nearly month-old search for missing Swiss twins is again focusing on the French island of Corsica, where their father visited days before throwing himself under a train in Italy, Swiss police said Friday.
Since their disappearance Jan. 30, the search for 6-year-old twins Alessia and Livia Schepp had focused on Corsica. Witnesses had claimed to have seen the girls board an overnight ferry Jan. 31 that was headed to Corsica from Marseille, France, with their father, Matthias Kaspar Schepp.
