Husband: Missing Newark Mom Being Treated For Depression
Newark Mom & Son Still Missing 4 Days Later
A Newark mother and her son disappear Thursday evening. Can you help bring them home?
Sara Apple, 24, and her 4-year-old son, Max, were seen last at about 6 p.m. Thursday, June 9.
Sara picked up Max from day care Thursday evening but didn't make it home to her husband, Chris. Sara did have her purse Thursday.
Chris told his wife's parents Sara texted him and said she was staying at their [Sara's parents'] house Thursday night.
She didn't make it to her parents' Whitehall home that night.
When Sara didn't show up at her job Friday morning or call in, her family realized something was wrong. She's the head teller at a Newark bank.
Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow told NBC4 Sara is on medication, but he couldn't elaborate on the type of medication or what it treats.
NBC4 talked to Sara's husband Monday afternoon. He said his wife was being treated for depression and recently changed medication.
He said police are investigating whether Sara may have stopped taking her medication.
He also said he and Sara have recently agreed to separate and share custody of Max. He said the separation was amicable.
"I don't think she'd ever do anything to intentionally hurt Max. I know she loves him," he said.

Police Expand Search For Missing Woman, 4-Year-Old
A Newark man said on Sunday that he hopes someone knows something about the disappearance of his wife and four-year-old son.
Sara Apple and her son, Max, were last heard from and seen in the Newark area on Thursday at about 6 p.m., 10TV's Chuck Strickler reported.
"Of course, the worst case scenario pops into your head," said Sara Apple's husband, Chris Apple. "There's no reason for her to not be at her mom's or (at home). Were they carjacked or kidnapped?"
Chris Apple said that he last spoke to his wife on Thursday, when she said that she was staying at her mother's house in Whitehall. He has not heard from her since.
"I'm feeling horrible," Chris Apple said. "I've never felt this bad in my life. I haven't been able to sleep. (I) haven't been able to eat."
Sara Apple's father, Mark Yohman, said that he has searched everywhere for the pair.
"I've been to (Interstate) 70 east, all the way to Zanesville, at every single exit and gas station," Yohman said. This is completely out of character. It's something nobody would expect."
Yohman hung a flyer on the side of the family car in hopes that someone will recognize his daughter and grandson.
The FBI, along with state and local agencies, are also helping. The search has extended to Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina on a tip that Sara Apple has family there.
According to police, Sara Apple is believed to be driving a 2004 white Saturn Ion with Ohio license plate No. FCQ-5079. The vehicle also has a family icon sticker representing a family of four in the rear window.

“We spoke to the detectives today and they are leaving no stone unturned. As you may be aware, the FBI is assisting in the search. They are looking in Ohio as well as outside of Ohio. They said to spread the word to everywhere.
“One if the important keys is to find the car. Please share the flyers that are out there. Not only does it have their beautiful pictures, but it lists the make and model of the car.”
“With people like you,” Mark said, “we are going to find them. We cannot wait to Hug Sara and kiss Max's face all over.”

Missing Newark Mom Left On Her Own, Police Say
Police have determined that the disappearance of a Newark mother and her son is voluntary.
Sara Apple, 24, and her 4-year-old son, Max, were reported missing on Friday, June 10. Sara picked up Max from day care Thursday evening but didn't make it home to her husband.
Investigators immediately began searching for the pair and looking at the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.
After a review of the facts, investigators said they determined that the disappearance is voluntary on Sara's part.
Police said Sara was responsible for the money management in her family and was given significant resources to make the payments, but failed to make payments on bills including her mortgage and car payments.
Investigators said numerous checks were returned becuase of insufficient funds, existing bank accounts were drained and new accounts were created.
According to Sara's husband, Chris, police also found undelivered good-bye letters to her mother and Max.
When asked if he thinks his son could be in danger, Chris said, "At first, I would have said no, but I never would have thought she would leave town."
He said he is aware of the money issues, but never thought she would run away from it.
Police said they also found a "to-do" list of products to obtain and actions to take to impair or delay her discovery.
Investigators said they have been unable to find a single piece of direct evidence that the disappearance is anything other than willful and pre-planned.

Reward Now Offered In Newark Woman Case
Authorities on Wednesday offered a reward of up $1,000 for information into the whereabouts of a Licking County woman and her son, who both vanished nearly a week ago.
Sara Apple and her 4-year-old son, Max, were last seen on Thursday evening in Newark. Since then, Sara Apple's mobile phone has been turned off and her voicemail box is full.
Investigators said earlier this week that they believe Sara Apple orchestrated her disappearance. They suspect she fled after taking money from the Fiberglas Federal credit union where she worked. A company audit discovered that hundreds of dollars were missing from her cash drawer, 10TV News reported.

New Evidence - Mom Planned to Runaway Alone
Several goodbye letters recently found inside the Apple household have led Newark detectives to believe Sara Apple originally planned to runaway without her 4-year-old son Max.
"She had made a letter to Max that she was apologizing for leaving and that
hopefully someday in the future they would meet up again," explained Chris Apple, Sara's husband.
He found the letters while going through some of his wife's belongings and immediately called police.
"The letter to her mom indicated that she wanted him to receive that letter when
he was 18," he said.
"When I found the letters, I found a list of things she was going to
purchase...cell phone, hair dye," he further explained.
Although authorities believe Sara's disappearance to be voluntary, Sgt. Scott Snow with the Newark Police Department says the search is not over.
"Simply because we believe her missing is voluntary doesn't mean that we've closed
the case or that we're not pursuing it because we are," said Sgt. Snow.

Missing mom, son found: Dad says talking to Max is like 'winning the lottery'
Missing more than a week, 24-year-old Sara Apple and her 4-year-old son Max of Newark, Ohio were found safe Sunday evening in Maine, CBS News reports; her estranged husband Chris Apple said talking to their son Max was like “winning the lottery.”
Sara and Max are flying home to Columbus Monday evening, 10 days after they were reported missing.
Sara disclosed her and her son’s location to authorities in Trenton, Maine Sunday evening after she’d had car troubles and her money ran out, Newark Police told NBC4.
Sara told authorities that she and Max left in her white Saturn and that the car broke down in Pennsylvania. She left the Saturn in a parking lot in Erie, Pennsylvania, and purchased another vehicle.
The vehicle she purchased also broke down several times between Erie, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, Maine. Police say it seems when her options ran out and her little boy began asking about family, Sara called authorities in Trenton.
Authorities in Maine contacted Newark Police detectives who in turn contacted Sara’s mother Tricia Yohman and Sara’s estranged husband Chris Apple with the news that Sara and Max were found and were alive.
Chris said he talked to his little boy and “it was like winning the lottery.” He said he also spoke to Sara and that she said she was stressed out. He said he thinks she didn’t know how to deal with everything which triggered her to take off.
