National missing children's day
I was sent this message by the team at Operation Find A Child
Hello Everyone,
Another year has gone by and the news media has begun to forget that we still have thousands of missing kids out there! May 25th is national missing children's day and we need to make sure that the internet is filled with people paying attention. I know its over a month away but its time for everyone to get ready.
We will be designing a landing page for this day or will use the NCMEC's yearly design.
We need everyones help posting on all message boards, blogs, and by email links to the missing cases on the site and to these message boards to help boost awareness. We also have a desktop program we will be beta testing that will allow you to have a running billboard on your PC of missing children posters for the state you choose in it and it will be connected live to our up-to-date database.
Help us to help find these missing children and lets make sure noone forgets.

Re: National missing children's day
Tamsin do you know if the "running billboard" will have all children, or is it just for children in the USA? Sounds like a great idea. Our news channels should have something like this going all the time.
Re: National missing children's day
tamsin, can you send me a link to this website please? i would like to get this set up on my computer, i think it will be especially handy to have as i work in a hospital where these missing people could quite possibly turn up!
Re: National missing children's day
Just heard back from Robert.
For the time being it will include children from the US, the UK and Canada

Re: National missing children's day
I'm having a few days away from everything but will get in touch with my press contact next week.
Re: National missing children's day
No problem Tamsin and thanks for following that up. Enjoy your break. You deserve it.
Re: National missing children's day
Just saw this thread and thought I would update everybody :
Our New "MissingKids" Desktop Application
View CURRENT LIVE imformation on missing kids around the world.
Direct on your desktop while you work, surf, or for getting the message over to Others.
Our New Desktop Application can be used both to gather information on Missing Children's cases and to print out missing child flyers/posters.
Information currently supplied for the United Kingdom and for ALL States in the US.
Information also available on all "Featured Cases" on operationfindachild.org
Ideal use would be at an event - say a fundraiser or the like - where the
application is running continuously on a laptop - with either the info for a whole US state or the UK continously being displayed.
You can also get people to use it - its quite user friendly - and people can then see just how many kids are missing and where etc.
The info is LIVE - give or take 15 minutes - from the NCMEC/ICMEC databases.
You can also download the infomation for a whole state/country onto your harddisk and use this info in "Offline-Mode".
Offline Mode being useful when using the application where no internet
connection is available - say at outdoor events.
Please download, use and pass-on the Application to Others.
We are planning the Full Release on 25th May but we would like you to download and try our pre-release version just to show you what its all about and so that we may get feedback on it before the release date.
Download Page :
http://www.operationfindachild.org/desktop_download.html
When we have our final version ready (on or before the 25th) we will link our front page banner to the download page at :

Re: National missing children's day
In regards to countries covered we can only include those - easily - at the moment for countries whoose NCMEC/ICMEC orgs provide an rss feed.
At the moment that is only US and UK sadly.
Also the UK feed is not a complete listing - old cases arent on there. When they launched the rss feed last year I asked them why and asked them to make it ALL UK cases - but they haven't. The US includes ALL cases in ALL of there feeds.
Maybe thats something we could all do together - to ask for FULL rss feeds for all
countries covered by ICMEC?

Pye
I am really not sure what is going on here with this beta site. (Usually a beta site signals research and testing).
Anyway, I think that what has happened is that you have managed to make connection with several forum members in here and, if we are not careful, we will end up working against each other.
So, I would suggest that you work closely with those members with whom you feel comfortable.
Take care in your new endeavours - and I wish you all a great success.

Re: National missing children's day
We are "launching" our Desktop Application on 25th May (International Missing Kids Day.
We are just trying to get a few people to download and test it for us so we can iron out any bugs before next weekend.
Really I want to "make connection" with as many on here as possible to download, use and pass-on the application. I'm sure if anyone uses it they will see how useful it is.
Can't really see how we can be "working against each other" since we are all here for the same thing and this application can only help?

I just want to say to our forum members that I have downloaded your beta site as requested.
It is usually not wise to pass on beta software to more than a specified number of trial locations. It would be unwise, in my opinion, to offer the link to ANYONE WHO IS WILLING TO DOWNLOAD IT.
I will give you my comments regarding the site directly to you. At the moment, I would not be happy to post the link in here as the 'main line of information' for missing children.
But, I am happy to work with you on this roll-out.
