Five-year-old missing from Glendale apartment

An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday just after 10 a.m. and a massive search has been launched for a 5-year-old girl who disappeared from her home in a Glendale apartment complex.

Officers from the Glendale, Phoenix, Chandler and Scottsdale Police Departments were joined by an FBI squad and bloodhounds with Arizona's Child Abduction Response team in the search for Jahessye Shockley.

Glendale Police Sgt. Brent Coombs said police would like to talk to a woman, 25 to 35 years old, who was seen putting a young female into a car -- described as a 1998 to 2000 Chevrolet, possibly a black Malibu -- about 5 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 45th Avenue and Glendale. He said the child offered no resistance when put into the car and it was not known if the incident was related to the Jahessye's disappearance.

Police believed the girl had wandered away from her home, possibly through the front door, shortly before her mother returned home and called police about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Her mom had left her with three other siblings at their home while she went out to run errands.

They initially said there was nothing suspicious about the disappearance; however, concerns grew when the child was not found overnight.

Glendale PD follow up on tip in search for girl

Glendale police investigators continue to work a tip from a woman who believes she was one of the last to see a missing 5-year-old girl. A witness told police she saw a girl matching Jahessye (Jesse) Shockley wandering the neighborhood near 45th and Glendale Avenues Tuesday afternoon.

The neighbor said she saw the girl being pulled into a black sedan through the passenger door and then saw the car take off, heading east-bound on Glendale Avenue

Missing girl's mother, father have troubled past

As the search goes on for 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley, who was last seen Tuesday afternoon in Glendale, we're finding out more tonight about the family.

Each time we have seen Jahessye's mom she has been crying and appears distraught.

Police tell CBS 5 she is cooperating fully with investigators. They also say a search of the apartment where the little girl lives with her mom and three siblings turned up no evidence of violence or foul play.

But CBS 5 News uncovered a troubling past of both little Jahessye's mother and father.

The booking photos of Jahessye's mom, Jerice Hunter and the child's biological dad, George Shockley, were taken after the pair was arrested in October of 2005 in northern California by Vallejo police.

The couple was booked for what they call in California inflicting injury on a child, felony child abuse.

Police tell us at least three kids were put in protective custody as a result of that arrest.

Documents from 2005, before Jahessye was born, say Hunter abused her other children-including a 3-year-old, beating them so badly with extension cords she left welts.

In fact, the court said she "never, ever should have had children."

She allegedly punched her older children and whipped them with sticks.

The Solano County district attorney said Hunter entered into an agreement that dropped the more serious torture charged and convicted her of four counts of child abuse. The DA says she was sentenced on Aug. 22, 2006, to 8 years in prison. They gave her 243 days credit and because she had no serious prior convictions, California law allowed her to be released in May of 2010 after serving 50 percent of her sentence. She was then put on parole which expired in June of this year.

George Shockley is a registered sex offender and is currently serving time in a California prison. The Solano County district attorney said Shockley was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Sept. 8, 2006.

"We are aware of relatives' histories as well as father's histories," said Glendale Police Sgt. Brent Coombs.

Glendale police continue search for missing girl

Police continue to search for a missing 5-year-old girl, although an Amber Alert has been cancelled and no good clues to the girl's disappearance have been found, the Glendale Police Department said Monday.

The department issued a written release saying it remains committed to finding Jahessye Shockley, who disappeared between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday from her apartment near 45th Avenue and Glendale.

Police scale down search for missing Ariz. girl

Police on Friday scaled down the number of officers and volunteers searching for a 5-year-old Arizona girl who has been missing for three days after they found no hard evidence.

Jahessye (JES'-ee) Shockley was last seen by her three older siblings at her Glendale home Tuesday evening after her mother ran out for an errand. Police believe she left their apartment through the front door but do not know anything about what happened to her next.

They have no hard evidence to indicate that she was kidnapped, but about 100 officers and volunteers found no sign of her after combing through a three-mile radius around her house, including searching in trash bins, swimming pools and shrubbery.

"The statistics show that as the hours go by, the chances that you're going to find her are reduced," Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs said. "We're hoping for the best but preparing for the worst."

Police also have interviewed and searched the homes of registered sex offenders in the area.

"They were contacted almost immediately," Coombs said. "You always want to rule that out."

The search for Jahessye continued Friday, but was scaled down from 100 people looking for her to about two dozen in a less intensive search. Police also were following up on about three dozen tips they've received about the case.

"We're looking for that missing piece, any bit of evidence," Coombs said.

Candlelight Vigil Held for Missing Girl

While many people like to spend time at home with their families on Sunday evenings, a group gathered at a Phoenix intersection to pray for 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley.

Missing since October 11, Shockley remains on the minds of many. Some of the people attending the candlelight vigil don't even know the little girl.

"We're hoping we can beckon with a persons heart and they can do the right thing..we're also trying to raise money so the family can hire a private investigator," said United Power of Faith Bishop Tia.

Shockley disappeared some time Tuesday evening from her family's apartment near 45th Avenue and Glendale.

Police: Missing 5-yr.-old Arizona girl was likely kidnapped

Police looking for a missing 5-year-old Arizona girl, last seen six days ago, said Monday they now believe she was most likely kidnapped.

Jahessye Shockley was last seen on Oct. 11 at her Glendale home by her three older siblings while their mother was running an errand. Police believe she left their apartment through the front door but don't know anything about what happened next.

Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs said if the girl just walked away, police would have found her by now.

"Sombody knows something," Coombs told The Associated Press.

Police say they have no suspects, evidence or promising leads into the girl's disappearance. Coombs said the girl's mother is not a suspect despite comments she made to reporters.

"They're treating me like that - the interrogations and the way I've been spoken to," Jerice Hunter, Jahessy's mother, said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. "(They're) very disrespectful."

Coombs said police have treated Hunter no differently than any other mother of a missing child.

Glendale missing girl: Police release 911 recording

Police released a 911 recording of the distraught mother of 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley, who disappeared from her family’s apartment one week ago today.

Jerice Hunter, who reported her daughter missing on Oct. 11, sounded panicky as she called police for help.

“Hello, hello, hello, I need an officer at my house. I can’t find my daughter,” she told the 911 operator.

Hunter said she left Jahessye home for 20 to 30 minutes with the girl’s 13-year-old sibling. She described her search of the apartment complex near 45th and Glendale avenues upon learning her daughter was gone. “I went to everybody’s house over here at the complex,” the mother said in a shaky voice. “She can’t be far, I wasn’t gone that long.”

The mother answered the operator’s questions, and went on to say, “Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god I lost my kid.”

On Tuesday, authorities said they have no clear answers on whether the kindergartener was abducted, the victim of foul play or wandered off.

Police offer $11000 reward for 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley's return

Glendale police held a press conference Oct. 19, announcing an $11,000 reward for information leading to the return of missing 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley, or bringing to justice those involved with her disappearance. Jahessye has been missing since Oct. 11, when her mother called police after returning home from an errand and found the child gone. Jahessye's older siblings were left to watch her, the oldest, a 13-year-old sister.

The Glendale Police Department and Silent Witness are offering a reward for information that will lead to finding 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley or persons responsible for her disappearance. Silent Witness is offering up to $1,000 and the Glendale Police Department is adding an additional $10,000 for a maximum total reward of $11,000.

All tips eligible for this reward must be sent to 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377). If anyone has information on Jahessye and can't remember the Silent Witness number, police said they should call 911 immediately and they will still be eligible for the reward. Police want to remind citizens that they will remain anonymous through the system.

Grandmother of missing girl plans state Capitol march

The grandmother of a missing child from Glendale plans to march at the state Capitol in Phoenix on Thursday in an attempt to draw national attention to the disappearance of her 5-year-old granddaughter.

Jahessye Shockley was reported missing by her family Oct. 11 from their apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues. Glendale police say they have no clear answers at this point as to whether she was abducted.

Shirley Johnson, Jahessye's grandmother, met with the police chief, mayor and city manager of Glendale on Wednesday night to express her frustration about the investigation.

Family member of missing 5-year-old begs for national media attention

‎Ten days later and despite an $11,000 reward, police have not found a missing 5-year old Arizona girl.

Jahessye Shockley wandered out of her Glendale, Arizona home on October 11, unnoticed by her older siblings who were supposed to be watching her. Her mother called police after returning home from an errand.

In the first three days after the girl went missing, Glendale police wrapped up a grid search of her neighborhood and moved into the second phase of their investigation where they are following up on tips they receive from the public.

Family members have begged for information on Jahessye's whereabouts.

"Please bring my baby back... Her safe return is all I want," Jahessye 's mother, Jerice Hunter, said last week. "She belongs to this family... She's somebody's child. Mine. Please bring my child home."

Shirley Johnson, the girl's grandmother, said she is wondering why the national media hasn't spread the word on the case.

Networks Begin Covering Jahessye's Disappearance

Two children are missing, but only baby Lisa in Missouri has garnered ongoing national coverage. Coverage of Jahessye Shockley has mainly been local.

Finally Friday, one national network profiled her case -- but it still pales in comparison to the kind of exposure the media has been giving the baby Lisa case.

We talked with a retired Phoenix Police Sergeant, now child safety advocate, who says you can't overexpose a missing child case. Any attention, local or national is good especially in the early stages of a case like Jahessye Shockley's.

Paul Penzone believes the 5-year-old's story deserves national coverage.

"We would like to see more national exposure for this case, give Glendale a tip to bring her home safe if she is still alive," he says.

CNN caught wind of some of his comments about the lack of national attention -- and this morning the network called.

"Just asked can we do a story, we want to know that we are supporting the needs in the valley."

Jahessye Shockley case: Cousin says she contacted CPS about missing girl‎

A cousin who assisted in raising Jahessye Shockley said Friday she contacted Child Protective Services several times to report suspected abuse of the missing girl and her siblings.

Mahogany Hightower told AZCentral.com that she last saw Jahessye in April during a family get together, where the missing 5-year-old begged to stay with her.

“She cried really bad... We told her you can't come home with us now but you will later,” Hightower said. She noted that Jahessye was frantic, telling her “I've got to go now.”

Jahessye was reported missing by her mother, Jerice Hunter, on Oct. 11, 2011. Hunter claimed after she returned home at about 5:00 p.m. after running an errand, she found the front door open and the child gone. She had left Jahessye home with her three older siblings, ages 6, 9 and 12, who, according to police have said they don't know where Jahessye is or what happened to her.

Hunter is now eight months pregnant and refused to speak with AZCentral regarding Hightower's story except to say her cousin's claim was “not credible.”

Her picture is now being seen by thousands of people across the country.

Everyone is hoping the added exposure will lead to some new clues to find out what happened to Jahessye Shockley.

Despite the added attention, there are still no solid leads on the little girl who's been missing a week and a half.

A candlelight vigil was held for Jahessye Saturday night in Glendale.

Grandma of Missing Girl Says Racism Hindering Investigation
‎Jahessye Shockley’s grandmother says the police department hasn’t made her granddaughter’s case a priority because she’s Black.

For years in the Black community, many have claimed that Black missing children do not receive as much attention from the media or police departments as do their white counterparts. Now, Shirley Johnson, the grandmother of missing Arizona 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley, is saying what others may have been thinking all along – local police aren’t trying their best to find Jahessye because she is Black.

Johnson told reporters Thursday, "The Glendale Police Department has not brought this to the forefront. They botched this investigation," she said according to the Associated Press. "I believe it's because she's a little Black girl."

Jahessye has been missing for more than a week and police say they have no suspects, evidence or promising leads after conducting a search that covered the area within three miles of the girl's home and utilized more than 100 officers and volunteers.

Still, Johnson says enough isn’t being done for her granddaughter. Taking matters into her own hands, she and several of her friends and neighbors took to the state capitol in Phoenix to draw more attention to the case that she says is only getting local media attention, but should be of nationwide concern.

Perkins Township police are trying to determine if a young girl spotted in the Perkins Township Walmart on Saturday at 11:45 p.m. is a missing child from Arizona — or if it's a case of mistaken identity.

A woman called police on Sunday to report that she saw a little girl bearing a strong resemblance to 5-year-old Jahessye (pronounced Jessie) Shockley, who disappeared from Glendale, Ariz., on Oct. 11.

The woman did not immediately report seeing the girl, but later, after seeing Shockley's photo again on a television newscast, she decided to call police. She did not get a license plate number, but said the pair left in a blue or dark-colored sedan.

Perkins Township police obtained surveillance footage of the little girl with an adult man in the store.

Police are trying to determine if the pair in Walmart on Saturday night are related to the missing child case, or if they are simply local shoppers who were mistakenly recognized.

Grandma leads effort to focus on missing 5-year-old

The search for a 5-year-old girl who vanished from her Glendale home is getting national attention behind an effort by her grandmother, Shirley Johnson.

The case of Jahessye Shockley has been mentioned on CNN and NBC national news, among others, since Johnson complained last week that a lack of attention on Jahessaye's case was because she is black. Glendale police denied that allegation.

Jahessye disappeared the afternoon of Oct. 11 after her mother left her with two older siblings at the family's home near 45th Avenue and Glendale. No trace of the girl has been found since.

Family and friends of Jahessye marched outside the State Capitol last week and planned another march Monday to keep a focus on the search for the girl.

Johnson and Jahessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, appeared over the weekend in a podcast of the group, Peas in Their Pods -- a national not-for-profit organization that specializes in searching for missing children of color.

Hunter said she left her two older daughters cleaning the backyard and Jahessye getting ready to go out and join them when she took a taxi to run an errand the afternoon of Oct. 11. She said she returned 30 to 40, maybe 50 minutes later, and found the front door unlocked and Jahessye missing. Hunter described her missing daughter as a "very inquisitive child, very trusting, beautiful human being" and pleaded, "Please bring my baby home."
