Police Suspect Jahessye Shockley Was Murdered
‎Police believe the five-year-old’s body was dumped in a trash can before her mother reported her missing

On Wednesday Arizona police reported the biggest lead in the case of Jahessye Shockley, the five-year-old who has been missing for more than two months. Police believe the little girl was killed and that her body was dumped in a trash can before her mother reported her missing on Oct. 11.

"We're in what we believed to be the worst-case scenario from the beginning," Glendale Police Sgt. Brent Coombs said, the Associated Press reports. Combs reiterated Wednesday that the child’s mother is the “No. 1 focus.”

Jahessye’s mother, Jerice Hunter, was arrested last month on a child abuse charge “directly related” to her daughter, though the charge was later dropped. At the time, police told reporters that there was little hope that they would find the little girl alive. Coombs said new tips that came in following Hunter's arrest and evidence collected during search warrants led police to believe Jahessye's body was dumped in Tempe, Arizona.

Unsuccessful landfill search won't stop charges

An unsuccessful search of a landfill for a missing 5-year- old girl won't prevent the case from moving forward, said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

County prosecutors gained two first-degree murder convictions last year without the victim's body, Montgomery said. The county will wait to file charges until the search is complete before making a decision on if they will or not.

Glendale police have not identified a suspect in Jhessye Shockley's disappearance, but investigators said her mother, Jerice Hunter, is the focus in the case.

Hunter was jailed briefly on child abuse charges after her daughter's disappearance, but released soon after because Montgomery did not want to risk a double jeopardy situation should he pursue a murder charge.

Police comb through 6,000 tons of trash for body of missing Arizona girl, 5, in search that could take SIX WEEKS

  • Jhessye Shockley reported missing in October

  • Mother Jerice Hunter primary focus of investigation

  • Police say they know exact date remains were dumped and will search specific section of landfill

  • 40 officers will sift through 6,000 tons of trash for body in search that could take between four and six weeks

Police will begin scouring a landfill for the body of five-year-old Jhessye Shockley - four months after the youngster was reported missing.
It could take Glendale police in Arizona up to six weeks to sift through more than 6,000 tons of trash at Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile.
Authorities believe the body of the child, who was reported missing on October 11, was thrown into a dumpster and transported to the landfill.

Compacted trash will be spread out over an area of 180 feet by 200 feet for a team to sift through with rakes, The Arizona Republic reported.
The search of the specific section of the landfill comes two months after police first considered scouring the dump for the youngster's remains.
Jhessye was reported missing in October by her mother Jerice Hunter, who became the primary focus in the police investigation.

Dark birthday for missing Glendale girl Jhessye Shockley

A birthday party was thrown for a missing 6-year-old Glendale girl Sunday even though she has not been seen in more than half a year.

A group of child abuse prevention advocates brought cake, balloons, and refreshments to Jhessye Shockley ’s memorial on in the corner of 45th and Glendale avenues.

The group used Jhessye’s 6th birthday as a way to acknowledge the start of National Child Abuse Prevention month in April.

The group Jessica’s Law Now told ABC15 they held the event for every victim and survivor of child abuse.

The group takes their name from Jessica Lunsford, a 9-year-old Florida girl killed by a sex offender. They want stricter laws to protect children nationwide.

Police, friends, and family have searched for Jhessye practically every day since her disappearance in October.

The main search for her has moved to a landfill south of Phoenix . That's where detectives think Jhessye's body is.

Law enforcement is investigating the possibility that her mother, Jerice Hunter, killed Jhessye and then dumped her body in the trash.

Searchers have so far gone through more than 2,500 tons of trash, but there is still no sign of Jhessye.

The people behind Sunday’s child abuse prevention event said they are suspicious of Hunter. She refused to show up to the birthday event in her daughter’s honor.

Crews searching landfill for missing girl holding out hope

Crews searching for missing Glendale 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley say they're holding out hope they'll find her.

"I spoke to a couple of the search personnel this week. The motivation is still high. They still believe in their hearts they are going to find Jhessye out there," shared Officer Tracey Breeden with Glendale Police.

For nine weeks search teams have sifted through garbage at the Butterfield Landfill searching for any sign of the girl.

So far, they haven't made any significant finds but officials say they're confident they're searching the right spot.

No end in sight in the search for the body of Jhessye Shockley

Glendale Police have spent almost $400,000 in the first two months of a landfill search for Jhessye Shockley, who was reported missing by her mother, Jerice Hunter, on October 11.

Investigators believe the girl's body was dumped into a Tempe trash bin days before she was reported missing, and Hunter remains the primary focus of the investigation.

To date, Glendale Police have spent $144,000 in overtime and another $255,000 from drug seizure funds to pay for equipment, fuel and other costs.

"There's no set time for the search to end," said Tracey Breeden with Glendale Police. "We plan on being at that landfill until we search the target area. We are professionally and ethically bound to be there and costs come with that responsibility.

"We understand the costs are climbing but we have a duty to be out there. We feel there's a little girl out there named Jhessye and we're doing everything we can to locate her."

As steep as the pricetag is to Glendale Police, it could have been much more without the help of several Valley agencies that have joined the search effort.

New crews train for Shockley search

There is still no sign of missing Glendale girl Jhessye Shockley but that hasn't stop people looking for the little girl's remains south of the Valley.

Those crews got some help Monday. Workers from Peoria, Surprise, Buckeye, Show Low and Gila River began training so they can help with the landfill search.

Police: Crews looking for missing girl still have hope

It's been 13 weeks since crews started their search for the body of little Jhessye Shockley in a Valley landfill, but there's still no sign of her.

Jhessye has been missing for months.

Police believe she was killed and her body dumped in the trash.

Glendale police believe they know the area of the Butterfield landfill where her body would have ended up.

Crews have now sifted through 70 percent of that area going through 400 to 500 tons of trash a week, and police say there is still hope.

"We have a lot of new people out there. Every month there's a whole new set of volunteers with a whole new attitude and excitement about being out there and hopeful that they're going to locate Jhessye so spirits actually stay high," explained Tracey Breedan with Glendale police.

She did say it's tough for people who've been involved in the search from week to week.

More than 185 people from agencies all over the Valley have been trained to help in the search.

Search for remains of Jhessye Shockley coming to an end

Glendale Police have announced that their search for the remains of missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley at the Butterfield Landfill is coming to an end.

As of Friday, authorities had yet to discover any significant evidence connected to Shockley’s disappearance.

Glendale Police are working to put together a press conference to provide more information about the investigation.

Shockley was last seen at her Glendale home back on October 11. Shockley’s mother, Jerice Hunter, was arrested back in November, but released a few days later after authorities decided not to file a child abuse charge.

Glendale detectives would eventually receive a tip that Shockley had been murdered and dumped in the trash.

Authorities were able to determine that the trash ended up just south of the Valley in the Butterfield Landfill, which is where they’ve been searching for the past few months.

I was speaking to a news reporter via Twitter who has been invoved reporting little Jhessye's disappearance. Sadly they did not find her. As the new conference was being held Lisa was reporting every few minutes what the police where saying. They said they knew that little girl was there but they could not find her. They still maintain the mother in the prime suspect. They wanted to find Jhyssye to bring closure to the family who brought her up. God bless this lttle girl xxxx

My Fox Phoenix

12 October 2012

Remembering Jhessye Shockley, 1 year after disappearance

One year ago today, 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing by her mother, Jerice Hunter. Her body still hasn't been found.

What followed was an extensive search that eventually ended unfruitfully in a valley landfill, and the investigation transformed from the initial amber alert, to a missing persons case, to that of a homicide.

Last year, Shockley's mother was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, and released one week later when no charges were filed. One month ago she was arrested for first degree murder in the case, and has since pleaded not guilty.

Investigative reports show ongoing abuse at the hands of Hunter, that Jhessye was kept in a closet without food or water, and that her siblings were told to lie about when she supposedly went missing.

Now the state must prosecute Hunter without the victim's body.

"It is my firm belief that with the investigation to this point that we've secured the appropriate charges and the process will proceed with the sole goal of providing justice," said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery during Hunter's arrest announcement.

The Glendale Police department issued a statement Thursday to show their remembrance of Jhessye Shockley.

The Glendale Police Department would like to acknowledge the significance of today as the one year anniversary of the investigation into the disappearance of Jhessye Shockley. On October 11, 2011, officers were called to an apartment complex in south Glendale for what would later evolve into an approximate yearlong investigation that would have a significant impact on the lives of many people in our community, and would change a family forever

As we look back on the year, we are saddened by the circumstances that we know lead to the disappearance and death of Jhessye and the arrest of Jerice Hunter, and yet we are encouraged by the outpouring of support from our law enforcement partners and the community as a whole. Rarely does an investigation invoke so many different emotions for so many people. None of us will ever forget little Jhessye, and remembrance of her weighs heavily upon our hearts today..
