More details about the missing McStay family‎

Detective Troy Dugal of the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. has been working on the case and following hundreds of leads.

"I absolutely know their financials and their friends better than I know my own financials and my wife's friends," said DuGal to the Associated Press.

What troubles the detective the most about the case is that there were four days that passed before the McStays assumingly crossed the border as seen in a hazy surveillance tape. He wonders if they were staying with friends or at a hotel.

The day they disappeared Summer had made a cell phone call to a homeopathic medicine company and asked an employee for a medication called "Anger". Which the internet company responded "it doesn't exist."

Then at 7:47 p.m., the McStay's Isuzu Trooper, the same one that was found at the San Ysidro shopping center was picked up by a neighbor's surveillance tape as it passed by.

The last phone call Joseph made was at 8:28 p.m. to an employee to follow up on a meeting they had earlier in the day. The employee told Dugal that it was strictly business and Joseph was calm.

A computer search showed that Summer had emailed a Craigslist seller about Rosetta Stone software to learn Spanish, they were selling and witnesses say they saw Joseph at a soccer game shaking hands with two men the day that the software was suppose to be picked up.

Also, on the computer was the queries for passport requirements and the age requirements for entering the country.

Dugal believe that the surveillance tape at the border shows the McStays as the woman is wearing fur and Ugg boots which Summer had a penchant for. The man and the kids are wearing hats, which they often did.

Many have guessed that the McStay's were under a witness protection program, but DuGall says the FBI assures him that they are not.

"I believe something occurred within those four walls between the four family members that made them leave in a hurry. It may have been good, It may have been bad. I don't' know," said DuGal.

These children are still listed as missing.

There are no news updates at this time.

Joseph would be 4 years old now.
Gianni would be 6 years old now.

EXCLUSIVE

Mystery of the McStay family money:

  • Missing couple found dead in a shallow grave with their children could 'barely afford' cheap rent months before vanishing with $100k in the bank

  • The McStay family were found in a shallow grave in the Californian desert last week, almost four years after they mysteriously vanished

  • They could barely afford to pay $210 a week on rent just months before they disappeared said a neighbor who now lives in their former home

  • Joseph and Summer McStay were also apparently being chased by debt collection agents, the IRS and lawyers representing business clients they owed money to
But they had $100,000 in the bank and had just bought a $230,000 family home

The McStay family - whose bodies were found in a shallow grave in the Californian desert almost four years after they mysteriously vanished - could barely afford to pay $210 a week on rent just months before they disappeared with $100,000 in the bank, it was claimed today.
Joseph and Summer McStay were also apparently being chased by debt collection agents, the IRS and lawyers representing business clients they owed money to.
Despite their apparent financial difficulties, they managed to find the cash to buy a $320,000 house around two months before they vanished on February 4 2010. They also had $100,000 in the bank when they vanished which remained untouched.

The reason for their sudden, unexplained disappearance has gripped America for almost four years, leaving law enforcement and amateur sleuths alike completely baffled.
Even the discovery of the bodies of parents Joseph and Summer and their two children Gianni and Joey Jr near a highway in Victorville, California last week has not stopped the wild speculation.

Some have suggested the family of four were killed by a Mexican cartel because of a business deal that went bad. For years it was believed they had fled to the Central American country after CCTV footage was discovered apparently showing them crossing the border on foot, four days after they went missing.
Now MailOnline has been given new information suggesting Joseph and Summer were barely able to keep up with payments for a modest rent on a small two bedroom apartment in San Clemente, California.
They lived in the property for around five years until just three or four months before their disappearance. Their landlord was apparently desperate to throw them out because they were constantly behind with the payments.

But despite that, when they left the apartment, they bought a $320,000 house in nearby Fallbrook and had $100,000 in the bank. Joseph's fountain making company Earth Inspired Products was their main source of income.
