Father of Slain N.C. Girl Speaks Out

The father of a five-year-old North Carolina deeply regrets his decision to send the child to live with her mother, according to an Associated Press report.

Bradley Lockhart sent his daughter, Shaniya Davis, to live with her mother in early October just before leaving for an out-of-state business trip. Antoinette Davis reported her daughter missing on Nov. 10.

But police have charged Davis with prostituting the child, and Lockhart believes she was trafficked to settle one of her mother’s drug debts, according to ABC News. Police believe Shaniya Davis was raped and killed the same day she went missing.

He stated that since Shaniya’s murder, he feels as if he is called to focus on human trafficking and help other children who are victimized through the same crime. It was heartbreaking to watch, and it was apparent that Nancy Grace was close to tears. She commented on how those involved with the case and searched for Shaniya Davis desperately hoped that they would find her alive. She mentioned how grief counselors were called to help those who searched for and found Shaniya’s body.

Cumberland awaits DSS probe after girl's slaying

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Officials in Cumberland County say they want to see the results of an investigation into their social services department that was launched after a 5-year-old girl was kidnapped, raped and slain last year.

Prosecutor Ed Grannis requested the inquiry after questions were raised about the county's contact with the family of Shaniya Davis before her disappearance. The Fayetteville girl was abducted and killed in November.

DA asks for continued probe of Cumberland County Social Services

Cumberland DSS awaits results of investigation

The strange saga of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services and the Shaniya Davis family took another odd turn Wednesday.

District Attorney Ed Grannis asked Sheriff Moose Butler to take over a probe of the DSS from state investigators.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said Grannis requested Butler to get involved because the prosecutor still has questions about the DSS.
