Elizabeth Olten Case: Alyssa Bustamante, Alleged Killer, Told Friends of Desire to Kill

The Elizabeth Olten case has been pressing on for a little over a month now. 9 year old Elizabeth Olten was found dead in a heavily wooded area days after disappearing on her way home from a friend's house. Her alleged killer is 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante. What's so shocking about the case is that Alyssa's motive to commit the murder was simply to feel what it felt like to take another life.

Jennifer Meyer, a close friend of Alyssa Bustamante recently spoke out about the Elizabeth Olten case. She said that at a party, Alyssa - the alleged killer of Elizabeth Olten - pulled her aside and said she wondered what it would feel like to kill someone. Jennifer didn't think anything of it. She thought her friend was joking, and didn't think that Alyssa Bustamante was capable of actually going through with a murder.

Jennifer Meyer also told reporters that the "note" that led police to Alyssa could have been written by the alleged killer of Elizabeth Olten herself. While she doesn't know for sure who actually wrote the note given to the police, Meyer heard rumors that Alyssa Bustamante wrote a note during class that was taken away by a teacher. The rumor is that the note written by Alyssa is the "anonymous note" that lead the police to Elizabeth Olten's body.

Out-of-town-jury to hear Mo. teen's murder trial

An out-of-town jury will hear the murder trial of a central Missouri teenager accused of slaying a 9-year-old neighbor girl because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.

A judge decided Tuesday to select a jury from outside of Cole County as an alternative to a request by Alyssa Bustamante's attorneys to move the trial elsewhere.

Defense lawyers filed a motion this week seeking to let Bustamante wear her own clothing at all court appearances. They say pretrial images of the teen in jail clothing would impair the presumption of innocence.

Attorneys for teenage murder suspect Alyssa Bustamante have petitioned the court to allow the girl to finish her high school education.

Bustamante was 15 last year when arrested in the death of nine-year-old Elizabeth Olten.

Despite being charged as an adult, her lawyers said she still has rights to an education.

Judge approves Bustamante attire

JEFFERSON CITY — A judge yesterday granted a Central Missouri teenager’s request to wear regular clothes instead of her jail uniform when she goes to trial on charges of killing her 9-year-old neighbor.

Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce ruled in favor of the clothes request that 16-year-old Alyssa Bustamante made through her state-appointed attorneys. The judge did not rule on another defense request that the teen be allowed to take high school distance learning courses at the public’s expense while awaiting trial.

Bustamante is charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the October 2009 killing of Elizabeth Olten.

Bustamante Trial Expected in 2011

COLE COUNTY - Lawyers for Alyssa Bustamante say they may be too busy to go to trial until 2011.

Bustamante is accused of killing 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten who lived in the same neighborhood. Judge Patricia Joyce says the trial will not happen until 2011 because of Bustamante's lawyers' busy schedules.

There were three motions the defense put out. The Judge only approved one: Bustamante can wear her own clothing at hearings. Two motions were not approved: To allow Bustamante to finish her high school education and to get family and friends records that aren't accessible right now without letting the state know about it.

Judge rules on motions, Olten family speaks‎

A status hearing for the Bustamante case is scheduled for July.

After the hearing, a friend of the Olten family gave a statement on their behalf. The family has not commented to the media since Elizabeth's body was found.

"I know that you've asked for the family to speak out on Elizabeth's behalf," family spokesperson Pam Cafourek said. "Rest assured, when the trial is over and her murderer is convicted, Elizabeth's family will speak loud and clear to you. Elizabeth will not be forgotten."

Cafourek also said the Olten family appreciates the outpouring of support the Cole County community has shown for both them and Elizabeth.

He asked for a different judge because Joyce is also presiding over the trial of murder suspect Alyssa Bustamante, who is charged for murdering his daughter.

Despite assurances from his lawyer, Olten was concerned over the possibility that something he might say or do in his case would prejudice the judge in the Bustamante case.
Judge Joyce reassigned the Olten Case to Judge Jon Beetem.

Court appearance scheduled in slaying‎

Attorneys were scheduled to be back in a Mid-Missouri courtroom for the case of a teenager accused of killing her 9-year-old neighbor last October.

A hearing was scheduled this afternoon for an update on the status of the trial for 16-year-old Alyssa Bustamante, charged as an adult with first-degree murder for the killing of Elizabeth Olten.

Judge stands by decision in Bustamante case‎

Cole County Judge Pat Joyce has set a May 16, 2011 trial date for a teenage murder suspect Alyssa Bustamante.

Bustamante is accused of murdering 9-year-old neighbor, Elizabeth Olten, last October.

Joyce also stood by her earlier decision that the county has no obligation to provide Bustamante with education services while she awaits trial in jail.

The motion was already rejected, but Bustamante’s attorneys apparently wanted a better court record of the issue of whether someone must provide the teenager with an education behind bars.

Attorneys believe state law requires that Bustamante continue her education.

However, the Jefferson City School District feels its obligation ended when Bustmante was certified to stand trial as an adult, was charged with first-degree murder, and was sent to jail. At that point, she was formally expelled from Jefferson City High School in accordance with the “Safe Schools” Act.
