Sheriff investigates early morning homicide, child abduction
Suspect might be headed to Mexico with son
The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning homicide of a woman in southwest Santa Fe and the taking taking of a 5-year-old boy.
According to Lt. Adan Mendoza, 39-year-old Jose Soto (aka Jose Melendez-Trillo) went to the home of his ex-girlfriend Patricia Cisneros, 34, and the former couple's 5-year-old son in the Casitas Mobile Home Park, 521 Airport Road. Mendoza said the call of the shooting came in to emergency dispatchers at 3:08 a.m. Tuesday.
Detectives believe Soto argued with Cisneros prior to shooting her to death.
"We don't have a motive right now," Mendoza said.
Soto then took the former couple's 5-year-old son, Cesar Melendez, according to Mendoza. It is unclear what caused the fight or where Soto might be, but family members at the home during the shooting told investigators they believe Soto might be heading to Mexico, where he is from.
Police suspect Soto still has the gun used to kill Cisneros and consider him armed and dangerous. The make and model of the gun have not yet been released, nor has information about how many times the woman was shot.
The sheriff's office asks anyone with information on the whereabouts of Soto or his son to call 428-3720 or 911.
The young boy was last seen wearing camouflage pajama bottoms and a T-shirt and has a blue cast on his right arm.
Mendoza said investigators requested an AMBER Alert notice, which would be sent out nationwide, but New Mexico State Police said this case does not meet the specific criteria allowing for such an alert to be sent out.
State Police Sgt. Tim Johnson said because the suspected abduction was committed by a family member, they can not issue an AMBER Alert, but are sending out a Missing and Endangered Person advisory across the state with a photo and identifying information for Cesar.
Soto is believed to be driving a 1997 Ford Expedition with New Mexico license plate KAX-140. The SUV has a red hood, red fender and red door, according to Mendoza.
Online jail and court records do not reflect a criminal history in the Santa Fe area for Soto. Mendoza said his office can not find any prior criminal information on Soto, either.

Missing boy found safe; father kills himself
A little boy kidnapped by his father Tuesday morning, is safe and in the custody of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say they caught up with murder suspect Jose Soto on County Road 56 west of the Santa Fe Municipal Airport around midnight Wednesday morning, nearly 24 hours after he kidnapped his five-year old son, Cesar Soto-Melendez, from his mother's home.
Investigators saw Soto driving his 1997 Ford Explorer tried to pull him over. There was a short chase before officers were able to surround and stop the SUV in a parking lot near the airport.
The Santa Fe Sheriff's SWAT and City of Santa Fe SWAT officers were called out. They immediately noticed the missing child was in the car with Soto, who had a gun, and held negotiations for more than four hours.
According to officials, Soto was waving a shotgun out of the driver's side window yelling, crying and insisting that he did not kidnap Cesar, but that his son ran after him and asked to come along.
Around four this morning, investigators say Soto finally released his son from the car, then turned a gun on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"At the end of the situation, he did open the door for his child, the child at that point started running toward the SWAT team that was on the scene. And it was seconds after that that we heard a gunshot," explained Lt. Adam Mendoza of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office.
Officers on the scene say the little boy was scared and tired, but that he was not injured.....
..... Officials say Cesar is back with his family and his grandmother has been given temporary custody of him and his older brother and sister.
