Kidnap search centers on park, ponds‎

Police in Ohio are using boats to search ponds in a park near the home of a man accused of kidnapping four people, officials say.

Foundation Park, a former gravel pit turned into a recreation area by the city of Mount Vernon, is a few blocks from where Sarah Maynard, 13, was found by police, bound and gagged in the basement of the home of Matthew J. Hoffman, who was arrested Sunday, ABC News reported.

.....Barber said Sarah was reunited with family members. He said the teen has spoken with investigators.

Ohio sheriff: 3 missing people may be dead‎

Fearing the worst, investigators searched a lake for three missing people Monday after a teenage girl who disappeared along with them was rescued, bound and gagged, from the basement of a man's home nearby.

Sheriff David Barber conceded that 13-year-old Sarah Maynard's mother, brother and a family friend may be dead. All four vanished last Wednesday from the girl's home, which was found splattered with blood, police said.

"We still would like to retain a hopeful attitude," the sheriff said, "but we have to be realistic."

On Sunday, Sarah was rescued from the home of 30-year-old ex-convict Matthew J. Hoffman, who was arrested and charged with her kidnapping. The sheriff would not discuss details of Sarah's ordeal.

"She is a very brave little girl," Barber said. "Under the circumstances, a 13-year-old girl being held captive for four days by a total stranger ... I would call her the epitome of bravery."

Using a helicopter to guide them, investigators searched a lake, bike paths, riverbanks and other places in and around a park across from Hoffman's home in hopes of finding Sarah's mother, 32-year-old Tina Herrmann; the woman's 10-year-old son, Kody; and her friend, 41-year-old Stephanie Sprang.

Ohio Kidnapping Victim's Dad Hopeful Missing Family Still Alive‎

Investigators have acknowledged that three people still missing in central Ohio may be dead, but the father of one of the apparent victims says he is still hopeful.

Steve Thompson, the father of missing woman Stephanie Sprang, told CBS News' "The Early Show" Tuesday morning that he couldn't accept the conclusion reached by police.

"Well, at this point, we're not listening to them. I'm sorry," an emotional Thompson told the morning show. "As far as we know, they are alive and we will find them eventually."

Police found 13-year-old Sarah Maynard on Sunday, bound and gagged in a Mount Vernon, Ohio home. Maynard's mother, 32-year-old Tina Herrmann, the woman's 10-year-old son, Kody Maynard, and Sprang are still missing.

Cars pulled from water‎

MOUNT VERNON — Two vehicles were pulled from the water at Foundation Park late Monday afternoon as the search continues in the current missing persons case of Tina Herrmann, Kody Maynard and Stephanie Sprang.

Sunday’s discovery of Sarah Maynard, 13, being held captive by Matthew Hoffman at 49 Columbus Road, led to search operations in and around Foundation Park, according to Mount Vernon Police Department Capt. George Hartz. The park is only a few blocks from Hoffman’s Columbus Road residence.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources officers conducted a search of the water at Foundation Park with sonar from a boat and located two objects in the water. Dive team members from the Fredericktown Fire Department verified that there were vehicles in the water which were then pulled out by employees of Blubaugh Body and Frame.

The first vehicle retrieved was an older Mercury Grand Marquis, which “had been in there quite a while,” said Hartz. There was a substantial amount of dirt and sediment in the car. A Ford Expedition was then retrieved, which Hartz said was reported stolen to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in 2006. “It doesn’t appear that either vehicle was connected in this case,” said Hartz.

Vigils offer prayer, comfort‎

MOUNT VERNON — At two locations in Mount Vernon on Monday evening, friends and family members of Tina Herrmann, Sarah Maynard, Kody Maynard, and Stephanie Sprang, as well as members of the community, gathered to pray for their safe return.

A prayer vigil, not open to the media, was held at South Vernon Methodist Church. The church filled quickly, as people gathered to remember the four who were missing since last Wednesday from an Apple Valley home.

Significant evidence found in missing persons search‎

Little new information on the three missing persons from Apple Valley was added by Sheriff David Barber at his media briefing Tuesday afternoon.

Still missing after almost a week are Tina Herrmann, 32; her son, Kody Maynard, 11; and her friend, Stephanie Sprang, 41. A fourth person, Herrmann’s daughter, Sarah Maynard, 13, was found alive on Sunday in a house on Columbus Road. The owner of the house, Matthew Hoffman, was arrested and charged with one count of kidnapping.

Barber did say some evidence, which he characterized as significant to the case, was found Tuesday morning but he would not confirm that it had been found near the Brown Family Environmental Center, the Kokosing Gap Trail or Lower Gambier Road.

Judge sets $1 million bond for Ohio kidnapping suspect‎

An Ohio judge on Tuesday set a $1 million bond for the man accused of kidnapping and keeping a 13-year-old girl bound and gagged in his basement, authorities say.

Matthew Hoffman, 30, is suspected of having abducted Sarah Maynard, who authorities discovered over the weekend. She disappeared on Wednesday along with her mother, brother and family friend.

Sarah Maynard's mother, Tina Herrmann, 32, remains missing, along with 10-year-old Kody Maynard and Herrmann's friend, 41-year-old Stephanie Sprang.

Hoffman appeared in the Mount Vernon Municipal Court on Tuesday via a video link with the local jail, according to Pam Fuller, a deputy clerk. He is represented by a public defender.

Hoffman sat in a corner and looked straight ahead during much of the proceeding. He wore what looked to be a green vest, which the local sheriff later described as a suicide gown.

Kidnap victim doing well‎

An Ohio sheriff says the 13-year-old girl who was found bound and gagged in a basement on Sunday is doing well, under the circumstances.

Knox County Sheriff David Barber says that word comes from Sarah Maynard's father.

Barber, who says he's looking forward to meeting Sarah, says the teenager has more fans than she'll ever know. Barber says having so many people behind her should help her emotionally recovery.

Sarah's mother, 10-year-old brother and a family friend remain missing and are feared dead.

The man charged with kidnapping the teen didn't speak at his court hearing today. The judge set bond for 30-year-old Matthew Hoffman at $1 million.

The sheriff says Hoffman is under suicide watch.

Report against Hoffman filed by former girlfriend‎

A former girlfriend of Matthew Hoffman, who is charged in connection with the kidnapping of Sarah Maynard, 13, from her Apple Valley home a week ago, filed a report with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office alleging he choked her last month. The report shows she told a county dispatcher who took the call, that she thought he was going to kill her.

In the report, the Mount Vernon woman whose identity the News is withholding, said she went to Hoffman’s house to retrieve her vehicle. During a discussion, she alleged Hoffman choked her and pinned her to the floor.

Hoffman, who according to the report is 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, allegedly then released the woman, who then left the residence and called the sheriff’s office.

“We were in his living room talking and he got upset and pushed me against the wall,” the complainant’s statement from Oct. 24 reads.

Barber said Wednesday that the investigation is progressing and search efforts continue for 32-year-old Tina Herrmann; Herrmann's 10-year-old son, Kody Maynard; and her 41-year-old friend, Stephanie Sprang.

The three disappeared, along with Herrmann's 13-year-old daughter, Sarah Maynard, who was found Sunday bound and gagged in the basement of a house about 10 miles from the family's home.

Today marks the 8th day since an Ohio family and a family friend disappeared from Howard, Ohio. Tina Herrmann, her children Sarah and Kody Maynard, and friend Stephanie Sprang were last seen last Wednesday. Sarah has since been found, bound and gagged in the basement of Matthew Hoffman.

Knox County Sheriff David Barber advised that Sarah has been interviewed and that the information was critical to the investigation. Sheriff Barber is understandably being tight lipped.

Search for trio comes to area: Law enforcement takes look around Pleasant Hill Lake

The search for Tina Herrmann, Kody Maynard and Stephanie Sprang came to Ashland and Richland counties Wednesday morning.

Authorities searched the Pleasant Hill Lake area by land, water and air for nearly three hours after receiving a tip that a pickup truck matching the description of the suspect's vehicle had been seen last Wednesday parked along the road to Mohican State Park Lodge.

The search, which involved about 40 officers covering 50 acres, began at about 10 a.m. and was called off just before 1 p.m.

More than 300 join search for 3 missing‎
13-year-old 'very, very lucky to be alive,' expert says, as hopes for 3 others fade

More than a week after two women and an 11-year-old boy vanished, hundreds gathered this morning to begin a more-organized search for the missing Knox County residents.

Between 300 and 400 people assembled near the sheriff's office near Mount Vernon and met with Knox County Emergency Director Brian Hess before being dispatched to the woods and fields in the county northeast of Columbus.

The volunteers were divided into nine teams, with most sent to the eastern portion of the county in the Apple Valley and Gambier areas.
