RIP little one. Many of our members will be familiar with this little girl's face from appeals.

Analyce Guerra was last seen April 23rd 2006 when she was sleeping in the living room with her mother and five siblings. When her mother, Eva Guerra, woke up at 4 a.m. CDT, she said the girl was gone and the door was unlocked. Police had no leads in the early stages but said that investigators found discrepancies in some interviews and questioned people again. The FBI's Behavioral Science Unit reviewed taped interviews of friends and family about the case to find new clues by looking into motivation for possible suspects and their demeanor. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children supplied five dogs for a further search around the apartment building. More than 100 investigators were assigned to the case when the girl was reported missing.

Now, 2 years later, skeletal remains have been identified as those of Analyce.

Remains are those of Smyrna toddler

DNA confirms it; police see foul play

SMYRNA — The disappearance of toddler Analyce Guerra officially has been deemed a homicide.

Through DNA testing, the state medical examiner's office confirmed Thursday that skeletal remains found Jan. 4 at Stones River

National Battlefield in Murfreesboro belong to the child, who was 2 when she went missing nearly two years ago.

Signs of foul play were "obvious," said Detective Jeff Peach, who has worked the case from the beginning.

"There is trauma, but that's all we're going to say at this time because it is an ongoing investigation," he said.

Walkers discovered a human skull near a Civil War memorial off Old Nashville Highway. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office cordoned off an area of nearby woods for 19 hours and additional remains were discovered.

Peach said nearly a full skeleton was recovered. Analyce's remains had been at the battlefield since the time of her death, likely the day of or shortly after she vanished from her family's home at Meadow Wood Apartments April 23, 2006.

"I can't think of a motive why anyone would want to hurt a child this age. I think everyone, including myself, hoped for the best," Peach said.

Peach broke the news to the family at the police department Thursday evening. Eva Guerra, Analyce's mother, could not be reached for comment. In his 16 years in law enforcement, Peach said, this death notification was been the hardest to deliver.

"I've been connected to this family for two years, so I've even learned about some of the distant relatives. It's not something you want to wake up to, but it's something they had to know. They have a strong family unit," he said.

Grandmother: Analyce "in heaven"

SMYRNA — News that Analyce Guerra is no longer alive was not what Guadalupe Gonzales wanted to hear Thursday.

“But at least we have closure and know that she’s in heaven,” Gonzales, Analyce’s grandmother, said Friday. “It’s been pretty hard.”

After receiving DNA confirmation from the state medical examiner’s office, police announced Thursday night that the skeletal remains found at the Stones River Battlefield on Jan. 4 belonged to the toddler, who was 2 when she vanished from her family’s home at Meadow Wood Apartments April 23, 2006 while her family slept.

Detective Jeff Peach has worked the case from the onset and said “obvious” foul play is involved and that Analyce suffered some trauma, but wouldn’t say exactly how due to the ongoing investigation.

Gonzales said she and her daughter, Eva Guerra, didn’t sleep much Thursday night.

“She’s so upset. She kept asking, ‘Mama, what did they do to my baby? What did she do to have to suffer like that?,’” Gonzales said.

The grandmother did not know when the child’s remains would be turned over to the family, but said they are working to get relatives in from various places, including Texas and Colorado, by Sunday night.

2-year-old’s homicide dashes hopes, leaves more questions

SMYRNA — Investigators and Analyce Guerra’s family aren’t the only ones who hoped for her safe return.

Police announced Thursday that DNA testing by the state medical examiner’s office revealed skeletal remains found near the Stones River Battlefield Jan. 4 belonged to the toddler, who was 2 when she disappeared from her family’s home at MeadowWood Apartments April 23, 2006.

The area where the remains were found belongs to LoJac, which is near the battlefield boundary, according to LoJac founder Jack Lowery Sr.

Detective Jeff Peach has worked the case from the onset and said “obvious” foul play is involved and that Analyce suffered some trauma, but due to the ongoing investigation wouldn’t say exactly how it occurred.

Hoping for the best

Glen Mitchell, owner of Affordable Driveways by Glen, put up $5,000 of a $16,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible in Analyce’s disappearance.

“I was hoping someone in her family took her overseas and she was staying with them. When I found out it was her remains, it was very devastating,” he said. “It’s just a sad thing there are people on the streets that would do something like that. People like that don’t belong in society. I’ve lived in Rutherford County all my life and never heard of a crime like this happening.”

Analyce's Grandmother: ‘God Only Knows Why'

SMYRNA, Tenn. - The family of Analyce Guerra held a small memorial service Friday.

Last week, Smyrna police confirmed that bones of a small child found in January in a quarry belonged to the 2-year-old. She vanished in April 2006 from a Smyrna apartment.

"It's not the outcome that we wanted, but only God knows why," said Analyce's grandmother, Guadalupe Gonzalez, standing outside the family's home.

Friends, family and strangers gathered together to remember the toddler.

"They've been there from day one and we wanted them to be there with us," Gonzalez said.

An Amber Alert issued two years for the toddler sparked a massive search. Several theories circulated about why she vanished. At one point, investigators had a local creek drained to find clues in the case.

"It hurts a lot," said a loved one. "It's very painful."

On Jan. 4, human remains were found in a quarry near the Stones River National Battlefield.

The medical examiner's office told the Smyrna Police Department that the remains found are those of the missing child.

"Now we just want to keep on praying that the people or the person that did this be brought to justice, so that he will not do that to another child," Gonzalez said.

"The second wish is that this family can finally rest, you know, the mother," said a mourner.

"We don't know why things happen, but we know in the end, there was a reason for it all," Gonzalez said. "Now, we've got to start living again and start putting closure to this."

The investigation into Analyce's death continues.

Police did not say how she died. They said she suffered some type of trauma. No one has been charged.

Funeral services for Analyce Guerra begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, 203 N. Lowry St. It is open to the public.

Slain Smyrna toddler laid to rest

SMYRNA — As Guadalupe Gonzales stood before granddaughter Analyce Guerra's pink casket Saturday, she said it was the last day her family would cry for the 2-year-old girl, an apparent victim of homicide.

"After today there will be no more tears. We have to prepare ourselves for the day we see her," she said.

Earlier this month, investigators confirmed that skeletal remains found Jan. 4 at a rock quarry on Old Nashville Highway in Murfreesboro belonged to Analyce, who disappeared from her family's home April 23, 2006.

Police say signs of foul play were obvious and that Analyce likely died that day or soon after she vanished.

A funeral service was held Saturday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel and was mostly attended by family members and friends.

Several songs were performed during the service — spoken mostly in Spanish — including "Eres Todo Poderoso" or "You are Almighty," Analyce's favorite song.
"I'll be glad when this day is over so we can just get back to our lives," Gonzales said prior to the start of the service. "I had been able to deal with it until I saw her casket. I've been holding up for everyone."

Ulysses Chavez attends Nashville's Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus with Guerra's family and gave words of encouragement during the service.

"She's in a better place than all of us. All of us should strive to be where she is," he said.

Before receiving the news that Analyce was dead, the family relied on their faith and believed that she was alive and well. Now, Chavez said, is the time for the family to keep that same spirit.

"(God) is going to show you things you've never seen before if you do that," Chavez told Eva Guerra after the service. "You have to — for yourself, your family and your kids. Doesn't that give you some kind of hope?"

Unable to speak, she simply nodded.

"Analyce is not dead. Of course all we have before us is her remains, which will return to the dust from which they came. Her soul is with the Lord," said Brother Jaime Gonzales, who attends church with the family.

The girl's grandmother said in her short life Analyce was hard to handle sometimes, but a gift nonetheless.

"You know what they say about the 'terrible twos'? She was terrible at 1. She was a handful, but she was a blessing to our family," Guadalupe Gonzales said.

In an effort to not bring any unnecessary stress on themselves, Gonzales said the family tries not to think about the girl's manner of death.

She also thanked the community for its outpouring of support and prayers.

"They've been there for us. We couldn't have gotten through this without them — the financial support, the food they've brought to us. I want to thank each and every one of them from the bottom of my heart," she said.

I was just browsing to see if the killer had been identified... I actually worked with 1 of analyce's older brothers at the school they were attending when she disappeared & my daughter was born just before analyce was found. I can't believe no arrests have been made...
