NSPCC calls for law change for social worker cases

Social workers in England involved in child protection cases should be forced to see young people away from their parent or guardians, the NSPCC says.

They currently need parental or guardian permission, or a court order.

The government plans to publish guidelines which it says will recommend that social workers speak to a child alone when appropriate.

But the NSPCC says unless the law is changed to make this obligatory, some children will remain at risk.

The NSPCC says such a change would help prevent a repeat of cases such as that of seven-year-old Khyra Ishaq, whose mother prevented social workers from seeing her alone at their Birmingham home.

She weighed two stones and nine pounds when she died.

Mother who let her daughter, 7, starve to death in a house full of food is jailed for 15 years

A mother and stepfather who starved their seven-year-old daughter to death were jailed for manslaughter yesterday.

Khyra Ishaq died after a 'chilling' punishment regime carried out by Angela Gordon and Junaid Abuhamza, a judge said.

She was beaten with a bamboo cane, forced to stand outside in her underwear for hours and had lost 40 per cent of body weight when she died at just 2st 9lb.

She had been reduced to scavenging bread from a neighbour's bird table because the pair kept their well-stocked kitchen bolted shut in a 'behavioural code'.

Gordon, 35, was jailed for 15 years while schizophrenic Abuhamza, 31, was given an indefinite sentence for public protection with a minimum term of seven and a half years.

The £113,000 wages of spin: PR guru earned £800 a day defending officials who let seven-year-old starve to death

A spin doctor was paid £800 a day to defend the disgraced council that failed to stop seven-year-old Khyra Ishaq being starved to death.

Terry Brownbill is said to have earned £113,000 for 141 days' work after Khyra died a slow and agonising death at the hands of her mother and stepfather, despite the monitoring of social services.

The PR consultant was hired to protect Birmingham City Council from criticism and improve the image of social workers - five of whom visited Khyra but failed to report any concerns before she died weighing just 2st 9lb.

Social workers sacked after Khyra scandal

Six 'incompetent' children's social workers have been sacked by the council that allowed a seven-year-old girl to starve to death.

The staff are not thought to be directly linked to the case of Khyra Ishaq, who died in 2008 despite being known to the authorities.

But they showed 'no sign whatsoever' of meeting expected standards, Birmingham City Council said.
