Council To Review 'Starved' Girl Case
The case of a seven-year-old girl who died after being allegedly starved to death will be the subject of a review by social services.
Family home has been boarded upBirmingham City Council are said to have visited Khyra Ishaq and her five siblings at their Handsworth home but no follow-up checks were carried out.
The girl died on Sunday, a day after the children were discovered reportedly emaciated.
The remaining children have been housed with foster carers.
A spokesman for the authority said: "Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board will review this case as they do with every child death, and is meeting tomorrow to discuss this case.
"Birmingham City Council was granted an emergency protection order for the five siblings of as soon as we were made aware of her death.
"The care and welfare of the siblings remains our priority and the children have now been placed in foster care."
Birmingham Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood is demanding an investigation is launched into the local authority's monitoring of Khyra.
Mr Mahmood claimed that the children were removed from school by her mother 10 weeks ago amid claims of bullying.
A post-mortem has been carried out but police are still awaiting the results, which are expected to confirm the girl died of starvation.
Mr Mahmood said: "I just find that amazing. It beggars belief that we have allowed this to happen, especially when an educational social worker has been once... and then no action at all,"
"There are lessons to be learned here - we have to be far more stringent with people who don't take their children to school."
Neighbours left flowers in memory of Khyra outside the family home, which has been boarded up, saying: "Why? RIP Little Angel. From local residents".
Angela Gordon, 33, and Junaid Abuhamza, 29 - believed to be the girl's mother and stepfather - have appeared in court charged with causing or allowing Khyra's death through neglect.
The sister of Khyra's natural father said she had not seen her six nieces and nephews since the beginning of last year.
"When I saw them last, they were in perfect health," she said.
The family's next-door neighbour said she was berated for leaving bread out for the birds in her back garden.
"This lady came to us and told us that someone from our house gave her (daughter) old bread from our back garden. She asked 'Why are you feeding my children?'.
"It was very strange and we told her that her girl must have come into our garden because I put bread out for the birds. We didn't see anyone in our garden."

Khyra Ishaq held captive and starved by her mother and stepfather
(snippet)
A seven-year-old girl was held captive in her home and deliberately starved to death by her mother and stepfather, a court was told yesterday.
Khyra Ishaq died of an infection after weeks or months of being deprived of food as part of a “punishment regime”.
Opening the case against Angela Gordon, the girl’s mother, and her partner Junaid Abuhamza, the prosecution said that doctors had rarely seen such a severe case of starvation in Britain.
(...)
Ms Gordon, 34, denies murder and five charges of child cruelty alleged to have been committed between December 2007 and May 17, 2008, when Khyra died in the Handsworth area of Birmingham.
Abuhamza denies murder but has pleaded guilty to child cruelty charges relating to the five other children.

Khyra Ishaq starvation trial halted as three jurors are discharged
A couple accused of starving a seven-year-old girl to death are to face a retrial after the jury trying them was discharged yesterday.
Mr Justice Roderick Evans halted the trial of Angela Gordon and Junaid Abuhamza after being required to discharge three members of the Birmingham Crown Court jury due to illness and other personal circumstances.
The defendants, of Leyton Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, both deny the murder of Khyra Ishaq and are now likely to be retried next year.
The jury, which had heard 12 days of evidence, expected to hear the start of the defence case, but was instead discharged and told that a retrial would take place at a later date.

Their trial has been halted after three members of the jury were discharged and will face a retrial next year (2010).
They were charged in May with "causing or allowing" her death between 9 and 17 May. They appeared at Birmingham Crown Court via a video link from separate prisons. The court heard that Abuhamza had lived at Gordon's home for around eight months.
A serious case review examining the actions of agencies in relation to the family is due to be published by Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board.
A spokesperson for Birmingham Council said an executive summary will be published after criminal proceedings had been completed and Ofsted had scrutinised the report.
