Child Rescue Alert

hi
not sure if we have this on our forum but here goes in case not, this came through from police crimestoppers that we receive every now and again , thought you may be interested.
About Child Rescue Alert
Child Rescue Alert was originally launched by Sussex Police in November 2002 as a ground-breaking initiative to save abducted children from being murdered.
The scheme works by interrupting television and radio programmes with immediate news flashes that a youngster has been snatched and is at risk of serious harm or death.
By joining with the media, police forces are able to spread the message to a vast cross-section of the public within moments, asking them to keep their eyes and ears open and to call 999 if they have crucial information.
Child Rescue Alert was launched across every force in England and Wales on 27 March 2006.
Where is the scheme from?
The scheme is based on an American concept called Amber Alert, which was introduced in Texas in 1996 following the kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman. This has now been credited with saving at least 69 children.

Hi everyone :-D Tezza I have heard of this before and have actually seen it in action on the BBC this summer when a toddler went missing in the South of England. The alert went out under 2 hours of him disappearing! I live in the North of England and this was a national alert. Thankfully they found him as he had apparently just wandered off but he was about 3 and was close to the cliffs and sea it was a dangerous situation and they were fearful he had been abducted.
This system has been rolling out across the country since 2002 and has been gradually widened to include the rest of the country. They will only use the CRA in truely exceptional circumstances that way they say people will know immediately how serious it is. It is based on the Amber Alert and does now include such places as North Wales and the Isle of Man as from 2007.
Link to the BBC website re the latest introduction in April 2007 ie;

Nice to know the system has spread out out across Cumbria, Cheshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, North Wales and the Isle of Man since April 2007.
Lets hope that one day it will be national for all regions of the UK.
Re: Child Rescue Alert
Crazy it isn't already IMO. How many years have systems been in action in USA, a decade at least.[/quote]

It certainly is crazy Pam. It's actually coming up to 12 years since the launch of Amber Alert.
The Amber Alert scheme was launched in 1996, and upto April 2007 more than 311 children in the US had been recovered and returned to their families because of it.
Come on UK, it's time to wake up and get a national scheme going here!

Pam it was agreed that all constabularies would introduce this on a rolling programme and it has been introduced in nearly all the regions. It may now be completed as this was early last year. I agree if it has not been rolled out to all areas yet then it certainly should be done asap. I'll have a look and see if it has already been rolled out and if not when it is anticipated being completed. Any highlighting of the system is always a good thing IMO.
As I recall seeing this put into action last year it is quite an effective tool as it reacts within the first couple of hours to a missing child!

Hi Tezza and everyone :-D I have been checking about and found this site; UK Police National Missing Persons Bureau/Child Rescue Alert.
Link; http://www.missingpersons.police.uk/childrescue.htm
"Following a suggestion from The Argus (a local Sussex newspaper) that Sussex Police may like to look at this scheme, Det Chief Supt Jeremy Paine visited the USA with the Tonight with Trevor McDonald TV programme. The scheme was launched by Sussex Constabulary on 14th November 2002, thereby becoming the first Force in the UK to introduce the Scheme. Surrey and Hampshire quickly followed. Since then there has been a slow introduction throughout England and Wales."
It looks like this is now national in England and Wales, site dated 2007. It does not mention that this is to be adopted in Scotland or Northern Ireland I wonder if they will have their own system? Also I see it was first introduced in 2002 and has taken approx 5 years to become national to England and Wales!

An abduction alert – what for?
This week we saw the still minister of Justice, happy and content, signing a protocol that creates a child abduction alert system. In his own words, a “new” and “powerful” instrument that will allow for lives to be saved. Is he supposed to feel proud about said system? Doesn’t the massive diffusion of photographs of the victim and descriptions of the abductor place the victim’s life at risk?
An abduction may have various purposes but the mentors seem not to have thought about that. In the cases of abduction for paedophilia, statistics say that in most cases, the children die during the first hours. In the case of abduction for ransom, public divulgation is baleful. Looking at the proceedings, all of them have been applied to recent cases without bringing anything new. I speak about disappearances, because this is the Portuguese reality. From here, I ask you: how many abductions for paedophile purposes or with a ransom demand have been confirmed in our country?
It would have been better if rules and procedures concerning said disappearances had been advanced, fulfilling the Parliament’s Resolution of 2008, concerning a national alert and protection system for missing children. Study the phenomenon and then create the protection system.
