Irish Times

31 December 2009

THE FAMILY of Dublin teenager Amy Fitzpatrick, who went missing in the south of Spain on January 1st, 2008, will meet officials from the Spanish embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs in coming weeks as part of their campaign to have the investigation into her disappearance widened.

Simultaneous church services will be held to mark the second anniversary of her disappearance tomorrow in Donaghmede, Dublin, and in Fuengirola, Spain, near the home of her mother, Audrey Fitzpatrick.

The now 17-year-old was last seen walking home from a friends house near Mijas on the Costa del Sol at about 10pm on New Years Day 2008. She had been babysitting and was returning home, via a short cut up a dirt lane. She disappeared without her passport or money.

Amy is originally from Donaghmede but moved to Spain in 2004 with her mother. Her brother Dean recently returned to Ireland to live with their father, Christopher Fitzpatrick, in Dublin.

Mr Fitzpatrick told The Irish Times that he believed the family would not get to the bottom of what happened to his daughter until the Spanish authorities investigated Amy’s “lifestyle” in the year before her disappearance.

He has concerns about the fact she was not attending school and, according to local Spanish media reports, was regularly seen out late at night in local bars and nightclubs, sometimes alone.

“I want Amy’s lifestyle investigated urgently. I hope the authorities will begin doing this in the near future. I think only by that being done will we begin to get answers.”

Ms Fitzpatrick, from whom Mr Fitzpatrick is estranged, accepts her daughter was not attending school but rejects reports she was leading an inappropriate life for a young teenager.

“She was mitching from school. That is the case. She was having a hard time and being bullied and I got her into different schools but it just got to the stage where she didn’t want to go any more,” she told The Irish Times .

“But to say she was out drinking and in pubs on her own – no, that’s all lies. God, no, she wasn’t.”

She meets the Guardia Civil in Malaga monthly for updates. “The situation is the same as last year. The Guardia Civil are doing their best but they have had no further leads since last year.”

Mr Fitzpatrick appointed private investigator Liam Brady last year to assist in his efforts. Mr Brady told The Irish Times that he, too, believed there were issues surrounding the life Amy led in Spain.

Mr Fitzpatrick has just posted a letter to his daughter on the internet which he hopes she will read:

“Dear Amy . . . Not one day has gone by that you have not been on my mind constantly. I desperately miss your calls and I miss you so very much. If you should ever read this little Christmas note I want you to know you are my princess and always will be and the search for you will never end. Please, please make contact with someone, anyone. All my love, Dad.”

If I can make it this year, weather and safety permitting, I will attend the service for Amy. I feel quite sad about it today and hope some answers soon. Please promote Amy's case today on the net, thank you.

* 2 snippets of new information

1. Amy doesn't have a passport. Her mother feels there may be a possibility she is in France having crossed the border.

2. Audrey Fitzpatrick is planning to promote Amy's case as much as possible in 2010. She hopes to do so with the help of politicians and artists. She has spoken to Bono of U2 already to highlight the case at concerts and plans to speak wit Antonio Banderas asap too.

Irish Sun (Newspaer version)

AMY'S FAMILY BANK ACCOUNTS FROZEN

Exclusive by Neil Cotter

THe family of missing teenager Amy Fitzpatrick claim officials in Spain are forcing them out of Spain because their campaign to find the vanished teen is EMBARRASSING.

The Dubliners reckon they're being treated like Kate and Gerry McCann who were urged to leave Portugal after their tot Maddie thn three disappeared in 2007.

The British couple were accused of wrecking the tourism industry in the holiday hotspot Praia De Luz after they launched a massive search for their daughter.

Now Amy's estate agent stepdad Dave Mahon has told the Irish Sun his Spanish bank accounts were FROZEN and credit cards CANCELLED on Tuesday.

He Fumed " The bank Manager I have known for ten years has no idea why my account was frozen. It makes doing business impossible."

"My four Visa cards have been frozen too."
"I've been told by people who know that they (The Spanish Authorities) want us out , our campaign to find Amy is embarrassing to them.
It is the same as the Maddie McCann case in Portugal. KAte and Gerry McCann were an embarrasment to them.

But defiant Dave said he and Amy's mum Audrey Fitzpatrick refuse to leave Costa Del Sol until they find Amy.
"We won't go home until she comes back home or she is found dead"
Bank Manager Jose Luiz Marquez revealed "Caja Espana does not have a problem with this couple, it was not us who blocked their accounts."
Dubliner Amy was just 15 when she vanished on the Costa del sol on New years Day 2008.

Relief as Amy ruled out in grim find

The mother of missing teenager Amy Fitzpatrick expressed relief today that parts of a skeleton found in a stream in the Costa del Sol were not her daughter's remains.

Audrey Fitzpatrick told the Herald today she continues to hope that Amy is alive following her disappearance in Spain more than two years ago.

"A friend was in contact with the police who told him that the remains were definitely not Amy. The police still have not said if the skeleton was a man, woman or child but at least we can continue to hope she is alive," she said.

A SPANISH lawyer who was deeply moved by the disappearance of an Irish teenager has stepped in to help the search.

The lawyer generously declared he will fund the installation of two large billboards beside a Spanish motorway seeking help in the search for Dublin girl Amy Fitzpatrick.
