Possibly Closer to Finding 3 Missing Michigan Boys

‎It's been more than eight months. That's how long ago three missing brothers vanished from the tiny town of Morenci, Michigan. The case made national headlines because the father claims he gave them to strangers.

Search crews head into the woods of Morenci, Michigan Saturday. It's one of the areas around town they check. Crews are not looking for anything particular. It's part of a drill. Shiawassee County search and rescue personnel teach Lenawee County authorities how to be better seekers.

"The more trained people we have, the quicker it is to bring these people home," says Debi Adkins with the Shiawassee County Search and Rescue

Morenci Police Chief, Larry Weeks said, "We know how to search, but, different techniques make us more proficient at what we do."

Michigan police chief: Items obtained during search not related to case of 3 missing brothers‎

A southern Michigan police chief says a weekend sweep for evidence linked to the months-old disappearance of three young brothers didn't turn up anything of use to the investigation.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said in a statement Monday that reports of items being found Saturday related to the Skelton case are inaccurate.

Weeks says "none of the items collected were confirmed as having any connection with" the case.

Morenci Residents Hold Out Hope
Still no sign of the missing brothers but residents are not giving up.‎

Reports of evidence related to the disappearance of three young brothers turns out to be false. A search and rescue team conducted a training exercise in Morenci over the weekend in hopes of finding anything related to Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton. Despite news that the evidence isn't relevant, the community's hope still hasn't diminished.

"I might call Morenci the city of hope and faith," said Morenci United Church pastor Donna Galloway.

Seven and a half months later and the small city of Morenci still clings to a sliver of hope that their boys will come home.

"We haven't forgotten stopped looking for the boys," said Galloway.

Galloway prays constantly for the boys and keeps candles lit on her porch as a reminder for everyone to see.

While there aren't anymore organized searches, residents are always on the lookout.

The father of three missing Michigan boys from Morenci has pleaded no contest to three charges of unlawful imprisonment.

John Skelton entered the plea Thursday morning in Lenawee County Circuit court.
The brothers, 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton, have been missing since Thanksgiving, when their father didn't return them to their mother, Tanya, after a scheduled visit.

Father of missing Skelton brothers makes a surprise plea in court

The Morenci, Mich. father whose three young sons have been missing since Thanksgiving has pleaded no contest to three charges of unlawful imprisonment, according to WNWO's sister station WDIV.

"The plea agreement was entered into with the support of the Morenci Police Department, Lenawee County Prosecutor's Office and the Zuvers family," Chief Larry Weeks said in a released statement with prosecuting attorney Jonathan Poer. "We believe the plea agreement in this case represents what a jury would likely have concluded based upon the facts and evidence as currently developed."

Weeks also said the agreement "assures separate felony convictions for each victim, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner."

John Skelton entered the plea Thursday morning in Lenawee County Circuit court. He insisted he didn't know the whereabouts of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner and won't until he's released.

Skelton maintains the boys are in the custody of members of an underground sanctuary group. He said he wouldn't hurt his sons and only has the first names of the people who took them.

"This plea does not interfere with the ongoing investigation in this matter," Weeks said. "We consider this just one more step toward everyone's goal of fully resolving this case."

Skelton keeps his secrets in plea bargain over missing boys

Tanya Skelton wiped tears from her eyes but her ex-husband showed no emotion during a hearing Thursday in Lenawee County Circuit Court where he pleaded no contest to unlawful imprisonment of their three missing sons.

Judge Margaret M.S. Noe found the 39-year-old Morenci man guilty of the charges after reviewing reports by Michigan State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on the search for the missing boys.

No new light was shed on the whereabouts of Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5, who disappeared from John Skelton’s home on Thanksgiving Day.

Their location “has been and continues to be secret,” said Judge Margaret M.S. Noe.

The plea agreement dismisses kidnapping charges that carry maximum life prison terms. Skelton faces up to a 15-year prison term when he is sentenced Sept. 15. But the bargain preserves the prosecution’s right to bring murder charges if an ongoing homicide investigation bears fruit.

Investigators: Father of missing Morenci boys looked up how to break a neck

Dreams of the three missing boys near a Dumpster.

Memories of the trio covered in blankets and clutching toys before their father drove away.

The man's Internet search for breaking necks just a week before his sons vanished
.

Those chilling details were read in an Adrian courtroom Thursday when the father of three Morenci boys last seen on Thanksgiving pleaded no contest to criminal charges that could keep him behind bars for up to 15 years.

It is unclear whether John Skelton's plea deal with Lenawee County Prosecutor Jonathan Poer will lead to an explanation of what happened to Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton, ages 9, 7 and 5, respectively.

But in taking his plea of responsibility for three counts of unlawful imprisonment, Lenawee Circuit Judge Margaret Noe made public for the first time Skelton's conflicting statements to local and federal investigators that eventually convinced them the boys are dead.

Although Skelton has insisted the boys are safe and in the hands of a secretive child protection organization, he also told investigators he wrapped each in a blanket, gave each a stuffed animal and placed them in his van before driving them away, according to a WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) video recording of the judge's comments in court Thursday.

Noe said Skelton told others about dreams or nightmares in which he saw the boys and their belongings in or behind a Dumpster.

She said he made drawings and told about leaving the boys in a park and an abandoned schoolhouse.

The judge said Skelton told others, "They will hibernate until they graduate."

Noe also said investigators found that a week before the boys' disappearance, Skelton had searched online for how to break a neck.

Dad of three missing boys Googled 'how to break a neck' before kids vanished

‎Bizarre new details have emerged about the Michigan father who was the last to see his three sons before they disappeared last November.

John Skelton, of Morenci, pleaded no contest in Lenawee County Circuit Court Thursday to three counts of unlawful imprisonment.

Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5, went missing over Thanksgiving weekend in 2010.

In court, Judge Margaret Noe said she has read investigative reports by the FBI and state police, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Judge Noe said records show Skelton searched for information on how to break a neck about a week before the children vanished.
She added that Skelton reportedly told investigators: 'The children will hibernate until they graduate.'

Mr Skelton also told authorities he wrapped each boy in a blanket, gave them a stuffed animal, placed them in his van and drove them away.
Skelton has been detained at an Ohio hospital, where he is receiving treatment for an alleged suicide attempt.

The boys’ family reacted with understanding but disappointment after hearing about the plea deal.

Family spokeswoman Kathye Herrera said: 'The family supports all the decisions made by law enforcement.'

'There is a sense of discouragement that John will not get the sentence he deserves… This will not be over until the boys are home.'

Missing Mich. boys' dad gets plea deal

A Michigan father who was charged with kidnapping after the disappearance of his three sons has received a plea deal that downgrades his charges.

John Skelton pleaded no contest Thursday in an Adrian, Mi. court to a charge of unlawful imprisonment.

In exchange, prosecutors dropped a charge of parental kidnapping in the Thanksgiving 2010 disappearance of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-od Tanner Skelton.

Had Skelton been convicted of kidnapping, he faced a possible sentence of life in prison, reports CBS affiliate WTOL. With the lesser imprisonment charges the Michigan man only faces up to 15 years in prison.

According to WTOL, residents in the Skelton's Southern Michigan home of Morenci feel he is getting off too easy.

Father of missing Morenci boys to be sentenced tomorrow for sons' disappearance‎

The father of three missing boys from Morenci will learn Thursday how many years he’ll spend behind bars for the disappearance of his sons.

John Skelton was the last person known to have seen Tanner, Alexander and Andrew. The brothers were only 5, 7, and 9 when they vanished.

Action News caught up with Skelton's parents at Metro Airport on Wednesday evening. They're standing by their son and will be at the sentencing.

"I believe him. I believe in him," said Roxann Skelton, the grandmother of the missing boys.

Skelton has been sitting in the Lenawee County Jail since the beginning of the year.

While police are calling his sons’ disappearance a murder investigation Skelton maintains they are alive. He says he gave the brothers to an underground organization to protect them from his now ex-wife, Tanya Skelton.

Tanya has never been accused of any wrongdoing by law enforcement, and John has not offered any proof that his story is true.

At Thursday’s sentencing John will only get time on the kidnapping charges he pleaded no contest to in July, though prosecutors have left the door open to additional charges, such as homicide, if further evidence surfaces.

John's parents say they don't condone how he handled the situation but sympathize with him, believing his claims that no one would listen when he said Tanya was a danger to the children.

"I hate to see a young man with a lot of potential to be put away for something that is unconditional love," Roxann said.

Father of 3 missing boys expected to be sentenced today

A Morenci man accused in his sons' disappearance is expected to find out today how much time he will serve in prison.

In July, John Skelton pleaded no contest to unlawful imprisonment, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Under a plea deal, kidnapping charges -- punishable by up to life in prison -- were dismissed.

A no contest plea is not a guilty plea, but it is treated as so for sentencing.

Sentencing set for father of 3 missing Mich. boys

A man who maintains his three young sons, who have been missing since Thanksgiving, are still alive faces a sentencing hearing Thursday after pleading no contest in July to a charge of unlawful imprisonment.

John Skelton faces up to 15 years in prison in the Thanksgiving 2010 disappearance of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton, who were 9, 7 and 5 when they disappeared. Their father is to be sentenced in Lenawee County Circuit Court in Adrian.

In exchange, prosecutors dropped a charge of kidnapping

The boys were last seen at Skelton's home in Morenci, 70 miles southwest of Detroit near the Ohio state line.

Despite the deal, Skelton acknowledged that he still could face more charges in the future.

Dad of missing Morenci boys faces sentencing today, nearly year after they disappeared

The father of three boys missing from their Morenci home since Thanksgiving will be sentenced today under terms of a prosecutor's plea bargain that avoids trial on kidnapping but leaves open the possibility of murder charges.

Investigators say no credible trace of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton has been reported since they were last seen playing in the backyard of their Morenci home Nov. 25.

Lenawee County Circuit Judge Margaret Noe was scheduled to sentence Skelton this morning on charges of unlawful imprisonment, the result of a stalemate between the father who insists he gave his then-9, 7 and 5-year-old sons to a secret child protection organization, and investigators who say the organization doesn't exist.

Skelton's no-contest plea equates to acceptance of responsibility for illegally taking the boys with whom he had visitation during a bitter divorce, in exchange for dismissal of life felony kidnapping charges. The imprisonment charges carry possible sentences of up to 15 years, but state sentencing guidelines for a man with a relatively clean record are likely to be far shorter. Skelton also is likely to receive credit for nine months he's already spent in the Lenawee County Jail in lieu of a $9 million bond.

"In no way did the members of our task force or the prosecutor see this as a conclusion or a resolution to this case," Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks told The News this week.

Weeks called Skelton's sentencing, "a step in the process that is ongoing," but he acknowledged residents of his small Michigan-Ohio border town won't get any sense of closure until the boys are found, dead or alive.

Father of three missing Michigan boys sentenced to prison

A man who pleaded no contest to unlawful imprisonment in the disappearance of his three young sons last November was sentenced on Thursday to from 10 to 15 years in prison.

John Skelton's three boys, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner were ages 9, 7, and 5, when they were reported missing in Morenci, Michigan around Thanksgiving. The boys have not been found despite extensive searches in southeast Michigan and northwestern Ohio.

Lenawee County Circuit Court Judge Margaret M.S. Noe imposed the sentence on Skelton on Thursday morning, a circuit court clerk said. He was given credit for 289 days served.

Skelton told police after their disappearance was reported that he had left the boys with a female acquaintance and instructed her to care for them because he had planned to commit suicide.

Police have said that was not true, and the Morenci police chief has said he believes Skelton killed the boys.

Skelton pleaded no contest in July to three counts of unlawful imprisonment.

Boys' mother to judge: Disappearance is 'my worst nightmare come true'

This is the transcript of Tanya Zuvers' statement at Thursday's sentencing for John Skelton in the disappearance of their three sons.

"First let me start by saying that never in a million years did I expect to be standing in a courtroom talking about the disappearance of one of my children, let alone three of them. The disappearance of Andrew Ryan, Alexander William and Tanner Lucas has been my worst nightmare come true and all of this at the hands of the defendant, John Skelton. Not one minute of the day for the past nine months, two weeks and six days have the boys been from my thoughts. I worry about them -- are they safe, warm, being fed, and most importantly being loved. My fear is that the answer to these questions are no, because no one will ever be able to love those three precious boys like I do. I take comfort in the fact that as a Christian, wherever my sons are, God is watching, loving and protecting them for me.

"Not once in the past 9 1/2 months has the defendant given the same account of where my sons are or who may have them. His stories are inconsistent and farfetched. I am appalled at the fact that John Skelton doesn't seem to know, or care, where Andrew Ryan, Alexander William, and Tanner Lucas are.

"The disappearance of my sons has not only affected me, but it has affected everyone in my family, my friends, as well as the boys' friends, and the Morenci community as well as many across the United States and world. I've heard numerous accounts of the reactions of children who have been affected by this tragedy. These range from children being afraid of sleeping alone to children in a divorce situation not wanting to go with their noncustodial parent because they fear of never coming back to the other parent. No child should ever have to fear their parent.

"Family gatherings are no longer enjoyable to me; half of my family is missing at these. Nieces, nephews and cousins all notice and are affected by the empty spots where Andrew, Alexander and Tanner should be. Soccer season has started and Andrew, Alexander and Tanner are not here to play a game they have come to love. Also, Andrew was looking forward to his first year of being able to play football and was going to play that instead of soccer this year. I see his friends going to practice and know that he should be here to enjoy this new experience.

"I ask that the court give the maximum sentence of 15 years for each charge of involuntary imprisonment to John Skelton, with no chance for parole, and that no time be given for time already served.

"John Skelton has been sentenced to prison today, but this is not over and will not be over until my sons, Andrew Ryan, Alexander William and Tanner Lucas are back home, with their mom, where they belong."

Judge tells Morenci dad, 'You have failed,' before sentencing

The father of three boys missing from their Morenci home since Thanksgiving was sentenced Thursday to a guideline-busting 10 to 15 years in prison after John Skelton took a prosecutor's plea bargain that avoids trial on kidnapping but still leaves open the possibility of future charges.

Investigators say no credible trace of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton has been reported since they were last seen playing in the backyard of their Morenci home Nov. 25.

"It is my belief that justice may never be served in this case, that you should serve each and every day in prison that Andrew, Alexander and Tanner remain missing," Lenawee County Circuit Judge Margaret Noe told Skelton Thursday.

Noe sentenced Skelton on charges of unlawful imprisonment, the result of a stalemate between the father who insists he gave his then-9, 7 and 5-year-old sons to a secret child protection organization, and investigators who say the organization doesn't exist.

"I do love my boys. I look at their pictures all the time," Skelton told the courtroom before sentencing and before admitting that "I would have done things differently if I felt that the system didn't fail me."

Skelton has claimed he took the boys to protect them from abuse by their mother, Tanya Zuvers, who served jail time and is on the state sex offender registry for a relationship with a then-14-year-old neighbor boy in 1998. But a prosecutor told the judge Thursday that most of what Skelton has told investigators has been lies.

"The only question today is if Mr. Skelton is going to be man enough to tell the truth about what happened to his children or will he continue his cowardly ways," said Assistant Lenawee County Prosecutor Douglas Hartung, who later issued a warning to Skelton when the defendant didn't take his invitation to speak. "Don't get too comfortable in prison. These gentlemen are still investigating your case … they will be back to get you later."

Doctor: Skelton telling the truth about giving children to underground group‎

John Skelton has been sentenced, but there’s still no sign of the missing children. Skelton is standing firm on his claim that he placed his three sons with members of an underground organization, a family with adopted children of their own. Police say, however, there’s no evidence they exist.

But an area psychologist has been monitoring the case from the beginning and believes Skelton may be telling the truth.

Forensic psychologist Dr. Steven Miller has, for more than 30 years, been evaluating victims and suspects for the criminal justice system and family courts. And after listening to what Skelton has said about his sons, Miller believes he gave them up to a secret organization.

"I don’t see any evidence from my reading of his interview that he’s lying about giving them to somebody," Miller told Action News back in December, about a week after Alexander, Andrew and Tanner disappeared.

"Now, I see plenty of evidence that suggests that he’s misdirecting people and he’s not telling everything that he knows," he said.

Police Asking Hunters To Help For missing Morenci Boys

Outdoorsmen and hunters in the Tri-State area are being asked to lend a lookout to law enforcement this fall. As we reported Thursday, John Skelton of Morenci was ordered to spend ten to fifteen years in prison for the disappearance of his three young sons last Thanksgiving.

Lenawaee County Judge Margaret Noe exceeded the guidelines when handing down the sentence for Skelton's no contest plea to unlawful imprisonment. Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks says that despite Skelton’s claims the boys are still alive, he wants hunters and hikers to keep their eyes open over the next couple of months, particularly near Holiday City in Northwest Ohio. That’s north of Bryan and just south of the Turnpike.

It’s where Skelton’s cell phone says he was the morning they disappeared. Skelton maintains that he gave Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton to an unidentified organization, but Weeks suspects Skelton murdered them.

Search For Missing Brothers To Get National Attention
Team Will Distribute Pictures of Skelton Brothers

18 cities, 3,500 miles in 8 days all for the three little boys from Morenci, Michigan who went missing nearly one year ago.

Thanks to employees from General Motors the search for the Skelton brothers is going nationwide.

The employees will use a road rally competition to spread flyers of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton who haven't been seen since last Thanksgiving.

The Two Fireball Run teams are heading to Orlando, Florida where they'll take part in the event.

Team member Abby Oneill explains, "it's kind of a road rally, we'll basically play a game in a competition between about 50 teams and when we get to each city we are going to post a ton of flyers for all these missing children."

Over the next eight days the two teams will plaster several southern states with flyers of the boys.

GM team member Randy Floresca said, "if I make a difference that would be one of the most satisfying things that I have done in my life."
