Single operator manning ‘missing child’ helpline
In Portugal the European one-number helpline 116100, created specifically to report missing children, is being manned by a single operator, from Monday to Friday, during day working hours, as a lack of funding means reinforcement is not possible.
In Portugal, the second EU country to adhere to the 116100 service, after Hungary, calls are taken only from Monday to Friday, from 09h00 to 19h00 by employees of the Institute for Child Support (IAC).
Outside this timetable, and on weekends and national holidays, calls are forwarded to a recording that directs people to the PJ police without, in the meantime, supplying a specific contact number.
According to Manuel Coutinho, Secretary General of the IAC, this was the best solution found to counter a lack of financial resources and almost double the team, which includes psychologists, social welfare workers and teachers.
