Relief for police and searchers as Lucas Ward found
The 6 day search for Gisborne 4-year-old Lucas Ward has come to an end 400m upstream from his grandmothers property on the Waimata River

The body of missing Gisborne four-year-old Lucas Ward has been found.

He was found in the Waimata River 400 metres upstream from a jetty near his grandmother's property.

Eastern District Police communications manager Kris McGehan says a member of the public out on a surf ski found him at about midday today.

She says there is relief among police and searchers after a search lasting six days.

Ms McGehan says it has brought some closure for both Lucas' family and for police and searchers.

There will be a post-mortem examination on Lucas' body in the next few days and then his case will be referred to the coroner.

Lucas Ward's cause of death confirmed‎

Police have confirmed four-year-old Gisborne boy Lucas Ward died from drowning.

His body was found in the Waimata River on Thursday after nine days of searching.

Police have released the preliminary pathologist's report which shows the pre-schooler died from drowning.

The full report will be considered by the coroner at a later date.

District police commander Inspector Sam Abrahama said police will be attending Lucas Ward's tangi in Ruatoria and memorial service in Gisborne on Tuesday.

He said the thoughts of everyone are with the family.
