Letter: People deserve answers in Emmett Trapp case
EDITOR:
I have been following the tragic story of Emmett Trapp for some time now, starting the day I was turned away when trying to help search for him. This family has been left hanging with no answers from anybody, all while having to deal with the lies that other news agencies are writing.
Our whole community watched as this unfolded, and many of our community members went back day after day - many who were qualified Sheriff's Posse members - offering any help we could give, and always with the same result, "We have it handled - go home."
Do we really live in a time where liabilities and protocol have become more important than finding a missing toddler? In cases like this, time is everything! Why do we not call out all available resources immediately, instead of waiting until time is running out?
There are many questions that need to be answered in this case. Like why did the helicopter fly only 20 minutes the first night? Why did they search on only one side of his house? Why were the local and non-local posses never called out? Why did they not search at night? Why was it not made public to the people until 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon?
I don't think people realize this basically happened in the middle of town - we are not talking about a search for a little boy out in the woods. When I walked into the Sheriff's Office that Tuesday afternoon to offer any assistance I could give, there were five officers sitting in that air-conditioned building, and all the while, we know now, Emmett was just across Highway 69 making his way into the old mine pit that took his life. Is this really what we trust our law enforcement to do?
I believe our community deserves answers, and we need to stand up for change. But, more importantly I pray that this family gets answers, and hopefully soon, on what happened to their baby boy that day.

IT IS WORTH READING THE COMMENTS TO THIS LETTER - WRITTEN BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WHO WERE TURNED AWAY WHEN THEY VOLUNTEERED TO SEARCH; SAW LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS SITTING IN THEIR OFFICES AND VEHICLES RATHER THAN SEARCHING ETC.
