No peace for little Kiesha Weippeart as funeral may be delayed
A FUNERAL for little Kiesha Weippeart may not be held for several weeks because of the amount of trauma to her body.
Police yesterday confirmed they have more tests to do on the remains of the alleged murder victim because extensive injuries to her bones have made it difficult to find the exact cause of death.
The news came as a devastating blow to Kiesha's natural father Chris Weippeart and grandmother Liz, who said they are desperate to put the child to rest and give her some much-needed dignity.
"I'm not sure how much more of this sort of bad news we can take," Ms Weippeart said.
"We just want her back, to be able to bury her and give her some peace ... she is just a baby."
DNA tests carried out on the skeletal remains found in a shallow grave in western Sydney bushland on April 22 confirmed they belonged to six-year-old Kiesha. However, police have told the Weippeart family that officers need to do more forensic analysis on the remains before they can be released and buried.

Community embraces Kiesha as its princess
THE positive DNA match connecting skeletal remains found in a shallow grave at Shalvey with Kiesha Weippeart has sparked mixed emotions in a woman who befriended her mother Kristi Abrahams, now charged with murder, along with her step-father Robert Smith.
Accompanying the Standard to the bush grave on Tuesday, where the little girl’s remains were found, Alison Anderson said she felt betrayed.
``It’s hard to come out here. It brings up a lot of emotion,’’ she said.
But she claims that she was one of the lucky ones. She got to see Kiesha ride her bike and hear her laugh.
``Everyone has embraced this little girl as their own,’’ she said.
``It’s amazing how much this community has rallied together.’‘
Ms Anderson said when she heard the news in the early hours of Good Friday that two arrests had been made, she went straight to the police station wearing her purple Kiesha shirt that had only arrived the day before.
``I chased the police paddy wagon down the street, I could hear the whimpering noise inside, I knew it was her,’’ she said.
``I stood by her when Kiesha was first reported missing and did so for the first five weeks before I realised that something wasn’t right.
``It’s been difficult to come to terms with. Now everything I am doing is for Kiesha. We need justice.’‘

Friends and family rally for Kiesha as her mother appears in court
KIESHA'S mother, Kristi Abrahams, appeared in Penrith Court charged with her daughter's murder.
She sat with her face in her hands and did not speak or move as her solicitor told Magistrate David Day she would not apply for bail.
Her co-accused, Robert Smith, who is Kiesha's stepfather, did not appear.
His solicitor told Magistrate Day Mr Smith would not apply for bail.
The police prosecutor said he expected a police brief for the case to be ready by June 10 and Magistrate Day adjourned the hearing to Penrith Court on June 24.
Outside the courthouse were gathered family members and dozens of people who have followed the case since Kiesha was reported missing from her home in Hebersham on August 1 last year by Ms Abrahams and Mr Smith.
People from Mount Druitt held up signs.

Accused ask to leave jail for funeral of Kiesha Weippeart
THE mother and stepfather charged with murdering Kiesha Weippeart have said they want to leave jail to attend her funeral.
Family of accused killers Kristi Abrahams and Robert Smith yesterday revealed the pair had indicated they would like to be allowed to publicly farewell the little girl when her funeral is held towards the end of the month.
However, the girl's biological father Chris Weippeart said "hell would freeze over" before Abrahams and Smith would be welcomed at the funeral of his only daughter.
Abrahams and Smith are both being held on remand in Sydney jails, accused of killing Kiesha in July last year, then burying her body in a shallow bush grave.
From his hospital bed in western Sydney yesterday, where he is being treated for complications associated with his diabetes, Mr Weippeart vowed to do whatever he could to stop the pair from being able to attend the funeral.
"My family are the ones left to deal with all of this and arrange the best send-off for Kiesha that she deserves, and, I'm telling you, they are not coming."
His mother Liz Weippeart said: "It infuriates me just thinking about it."
But relatives of Abrahams and Smith said the pair should be allowed to attend the funeral like any other mourner, given the fact that they had raised Kiesha.

Final cut on Kiesha documentary
PLUMPTON filmmaker Saad Adam will abandon his documentary, The Disappearance of Kiesha Abrahams out of respect for Kiesha Weippeart’s family.
In February this year, Adam announced that he would make a film about the disappearance of the six-year-old Mt Druitt girl, whose remains were found in a shallow grave in Bidwill on April 22.
Kiesha’s mother Kristi and her stepfather Robert Smith have been charged with her murder.
Adam told the Standard he would stop the production out of respect for Kiesha’s biological father, Chris Weippeart, and his mother, Liz.
``I tried to put myself in the position of the dad and Kiesha’s siblings,’’ he said.
``Would I want my sister or brother to see a film about this? It’s not the best time to do a film because so much has happened.’‘
But he’s not ruling it out completely. He said he might revisit the story in a few years’ time.

Kristi Abrahams and Robert Smith, charged with the murder Kiesha Weippeart, don't appear in court
ANGRY scenes have erupted outside a western Sydney court where a mother and stepfather charged with murdering Kiesha Abrahams had been expected to appear.
Kristi Abrahams and Robert Smith, who are accused of murdering the six-year-old girl, did not apply for bail which was formally refused in Penrith Local Court.
Solicitors for the pair asked that the matters be adjourned until August 19.
A small group of protesters who gathered outside the court expressed anger that neither Abrahams nor Smith, who remain in custody, appeared in court.
The group, wearing purple t-shirts bearing Kiesha's picture, has vowed to protest during every court appearance.
"Why should they hide, why?" yelled former family friend Alison Anderson.
"They should be forced to appear."

Search for woman after Kiesha shrine fire
Police are searching for a woman after a fire broke out at the unofficial memorial to Sydney schoolgirl Kiesha Abrahams.
Police were called to the impromptu shrine outside Kiesha's former home at Woodstock Ave, Mount Druitt, in western Sydney, about 10pm (AEST) on Tuesday after reports of a fire.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, which damaged some ornaments.
A woman was spotted leaving the scene just after it broke out, police said.
She is described as of Caucasian appearance, about 160cm tall, of medium build with blonde hair.
This is the second fire at the memorial, after a blaze broke out in April.
It is believed that fire started accidentally after a teddy bear fell into a candle and caught fire.
Blacktown Council workers have cleaned up the memorial and restored the undamaged ornaments.

Kristi Anne Abrahams, 28, and Robert Smith, 32, are charged with the murder of Kiesha, who was reported missing from her home at Mount Druitt in August last year.
Neither Ms Abrahams nor Mr Smith appeared in Penrith Local Court today.
Their lawyers said they were not required to appear.
The pair was charged with Kiesha's murder after human remains were found in bushland at Shalvey, near Mount Druitt, on April 22.
Neither has entered a plea or applied for bail.
Today, lawyers for the crown asked for the case to be adjourned until September 23, to allow time for further forensic material to be examined.

A family's farewell to their princess, Kiesha Weippeart
THE public memorial service for Kiesha Weippeart will be filled with love, her grandmother said yesterday.
As plans were being made for a fitting send-off for the allegedly murdered six-year-old girl, her grandmother Liz Weippeart said one thing was certain: "That little girl will be sent off like a princess."
The family has decided to hold a private funeral, followed by a public memorial a few days later.
"We just think this is the best way to handle the situation, so we can grieve and mourn in private," Mrs Weippeart said. "And then everyone can come along to the memorial."

Mourners in purple as Kiesha finally laid to rest
KIESHA Abrahams has been laid to rest, six months after her remains were found in a shallow bushland grave.
Many of the 100-plus mourners wore Kiesha's favourite colour purple during the private funeral on Wednesday at the north chapel of Pinegrove Memorial Park in Minchinbury in Sydney's west.
Family and friends consoled Kiesha's father Chris Weippeart at the service, where a choir of children sang In the Arms of an Angel.
Six-year-old Kiesha was reported missing from her Mount Druitt home in Sydney's west on August 1 last year.
The girl's mother Kristi Abrahams, 28, and stepfather Robert Smith, 31, were charged with Kiesha's murder after her skeletal remains were found in April this year in a shallow grave in bushland near her home.
Father Edward Dooley presided over Wednesday's service and urged mourners to remember Kiesha - but to also focus on the present and the future.
"It is now time to heal," Fr Dooley said.
The Purple Army, supporters of the Weippeart family, donned their purple shirts and handed out purple ribbons ahead of the ceremony.
Kiesha's coffin was covered in flowers and arrived before the funeral service started.
Her grandmother Liz Weippeart requested that the funeral be a private event for people close to the family.
"She is our little girl, this is the way want to do it," Mrs Weippeart said.
"I don't mind who comes to the memorial, but we want to keep the funeral service private and low-key."

Purple balloons and butterflies released to honour Kiesha Weippeart
PURPLE balloons and butterflies have been used to honour the memory of murdered six-year-old Kiesha Weippeart at a public memorial service today.
More than 150 people gathered for the two-hour service at Holy Family Parish Church in Emerton in Sydney's west.
The service comes one week after a private funeral for Kiesha, who was allegedly murdered by her mother Kristi Abrahams and step-father Robert Smith.
The congregation heard eulogies from family friend Alison Anderson, a former foster parent to Kiesha, and also Flora Tiitii, the defacto partner of Robert's brother Jason.
Kiesha's father Chris Weippheart did not attend, but his mother, Liz, sat front row.
Two police officers involved in the investigation received a round of applause and a gift from the organisers.
At the end of the service, balloons and butterflies were released into the sky by mourners.

Public memorial held for Kiesha Weippeart
‘You may never get over something like this but together we can learn to cope.’’ Father Edward Dooley began the public memorial for Kiesha Weippeart with those solemn words earlier today.
About 200 people gathered in the Holy Family Church at Emerton this morning to say goodbye to the six-year-old girl who police believe was murdered last year.
Balloons in Kiesha’s favourite colours of pink and purple decorated the church and many people wore purple shirts with the words ‘‘Forever in our hearts’’ written on them.
A children’s choir named ‘‘Kiesha’s soldiers’’ sang Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.
‘‘There has been a great deal of mourning in the community,’’ father Dooley continued after the song, ‘‘we are gathered here today to put that mourning to rest.’’
Flora Tiitii, an aunt of Kiesha’s from her stepfather’s side, spoke to the mourners next.
She retold a memory of when Kiesha had stayed with her family for a night.
Kiesha and Ms Tiitii’s daughter had spent the day playing before falling asleep together in bed.
It was that image of Kiesha asleep with her own child that Ms Tiitii had cherished since two police officers knocked on her door in August last year and told her the young girl was missing .
