Update on the Missing McStay Family

New leads have been uncovered in the disappearance of the McStay family. Joseph McStay, his wife, Summer, and two children went missing on Feb. 4 and authorities are still having a difficult time tracking them down. Even with the help of aerial drones, no new leads have surfaced until last week when a surveillance tape from a neighbor’s home security system was released. According to McStay’s brother, Michael, the tape shows the family heading out together. “The tape shows everyone getting in the car at 7:47 p.m.,” he said. “They actually went out to eat that evening, and I am positive that the car in the driveway is the Isuzu.”

Video shows missing family leaving home

A newly uncovered surveillance videotape shows a glimpse of a missing family's activities before leaving their home and two unattended dogs behind, a relative says.

San Clemente businessman Joseph McStay, 40, his wife, Summer, 43, and their two children, Gianni, 4, and Joseph, 3, have been missing since Feb. 4. Michael McStay, Joseph's brother, said a video from a neighbor's home security camera shows the family leaving their Fallbrook house at 7:47 p.m. that day in their white Isuzu Trooper. On Feb. 8, the Isuzu was found abandoned in a parking lot a few blocks from the Mexican border, according to police reports.

The Register is trying to obtain the video. Check back for an update.

The McStays had moved from their longtime home in San Clemente to a bigger home in Fallbrook in December. Joseph McStay has operated a water accessories business, Earth Inspired Products, since 1996, according to its Web site.

"What makes me nervous is the four days between the video and the car showing up at the border," said Michael McStay, who has taken over the everyday business of Earth Inspired Products in order to finish orders left behind by his brother.

Missing family's computer contains inquiries about Mexico‎

FALLBROOK — Sheriff’s investigators say a missing Fallbrook family’s computer records indicate they had been looking into passport rules for children traveling to Mexico shortly before they disappeared.

Homicide Lt. Dennis Brugos said yesterday that investigators found e-mails sent to unspecified recipients in late January that indicated Joseph and Summer McStay were asking about entry into Mexico.

“It appears they went into Mexico of their own volition,” said Brugos, who would not say to whom the e-mails were sent. “There is nothing to suggest any coercion or anything like that, at least that we have uncovered … this still isn’t a criminal investigation.”

Relatives say they are baffled by the McStays’ disappearance and are skeptical that the family is in Mexico. They said the couple had not given any indication that they were going anywhere.

Two months after Joseph McStay, his wife Summer and their two young sons were last heard from on February 4, the search for the missing family continues, but with the help of federal agents.
