Fatal drain 'no risk'

Housing NZ says it didn't need to keep people away from the in-need-of-repair manhole Aisling Symes fell down because the people living in the home with the drain access were "teenage children who were not endangered".

Sunday News inquiries have revealed 5 Longburn Rd, in West Auckland's Henderson, where two-year-old Aisling fell down the manhole on October 5, is owned and maintained by the Government's housing agency.

For the past two years it had been rented to a refugee family who told Sunday News they complained "many times" about the manhole lid "blowing off".

Therese Uwitwguye, who attended Friday's funeral for the toddler, alerted both Housing NZ and the Waitakere City Council about the cover which came off during poor weather.

"The water comes out and the lid opens every time it rains. It's very dangerous," Uwitwguye said.

"Once off, anybody can fall down."
